Ann's OK. Evidently she can't get here from work.

I've had to wear glasses or contacts almost my whole life...but until recently, I've always been correctable to 20/20 or better. Now it's cataracts. Soon, I will have to have new lenses implanted. They tell me that the result might be good enough to let me do without corrective lenses, especially if we "tweak" it with lasik. But I'm still scared. Loss of vision, loss of memory...those are the two things I fear most. And they both run in my family.

I understand that fear. Being deaf, I have a huge fear of vision loss. But still, when 'early cataracts' arrived, I bit the bullet, shoved the fear aside and was implanted and tweaked with lasik. Best move I ever made. No glasses, no nothing, clean clear vision (if you're getting cataracts, you know about that 'aura' that can surround lights and such, makes driving at night difficult. ) That's all gone just good clean clear vision. I had both eyes done, about 6 weeks apart. Been a little over a year now. No pain, just at the moment of the laser, a big kaleidoscope of color. Had to leave the eye patch cup thingy on for overnight, removed next day, great vision. Was really easy, both times. No anesthesia to recover from either.

Thanks for sharing this, Treasure! It makes me happy for you and hopeful for myself.

Yep! You can have loss of hearing & still use a computer, read a book, watch tv, etc.

In my family- we either get into our late 90s & die from Alzheimers or die off from heart attacks.

I'll take the heart attack as opposed to having my brain eaten away slowly.

Scary...I know.

My sister, one of my brothers, and two sisters-in-law had lasik, and have been very pleased with their results. Me? I'm scared witless...I mean...they're my eyes!!

But if you have cataracts, and they're going to be in there anyway...wow, what an opportunity!

I'd love to be able to see the alarm clock in the morning without pulling it toward me. :D

Oh, it isn't energy, it's the heart. I can't tell if I'm being incoherent, or if they were purposelly attacking everything I wasn't saying. I don't care if they attack what I'm saying and/or "prove" it is hogwash, it is when they kept attacking what I wasn't saying that I started getting worked up. Stupid heart. So I'm not over there now for health reasons. Especially since I had that attack relatively recently.

oops . . . should not have started thinking about that again. heh. me go be calm now . . .

My Mom had Alzheimers. It was awful for us, especially my father, to see her slowly deteriorate. But I think it is worse for one's family than for the person with the disease. At first, Mom was perturbed, when she found she couldn't remember acquaintances' names. It embarrassed her. As her memory loss proceeded, she became less aware of it herself, although talking with her became like talking to a tape played on an endless two-minute loop.

She had never been a woman with a gift for happiness. Nothing was ever QUITE right for her. However, unlike many Alzheimers' victims who become very unpredictable, even hateful or combative, for the most part, Mom's disposition actually improved. Not being able to remember everything she was supposed to be upset about, she became a lot more easy-going.

When my father passed away, her dementia proved a blessing...because aside from a few brief moments, she never really understoood that he had died. He was "away on business".

Nevertheless...be it heart attack, diabetes, Alzheimers', osteoporosis, or cataracts...getting old sucks. The only thing that makes it bearable is that it beats the alternative.
