From: HoneyBear Lilliehook Yep, I was also brought up dirt poor and forced to eat government cheese and powered milk. Is there possibly anything worse than that dried milk and so many of the other foods in those damn government boxes we got each month? When I got out of college, I refused to eat so many things for the first year because I was just so absolutely sick of them from growing up - with ground beef even being one of my boycott items for a while.

From: Brenda Connolly And I get tired of the let's keep throwing money, OUR money at a problem instead of actually fixing it.
And those programs consistently fail, are ineeficient and wasteful, often times corrupt. The people who need help never get it, or get just enough to stay dependant on the Government and never getting back on their own feet. That is the idea of course, create a permanent class of people who will continually feed the cycle, ensuring those in power stay in power. The waste, mismangement, ineeficiency and plain theft I saw in the years I woked in the public sector are horrifying. I has to stop. So what then? Stop helping people at all until the government gets around to (ha!) some reforms? Cross our fingers that their local communities will offer sufficient help in the meantime?

From: Ann Launay It's good that you help the people and charities which move you, but not everyone does. And, just in terms of accessibility, the government has a far greater ability to reach and distribute funds to those in need. In fact, honestly, it doesn't matter WHO is in office...we're going down hard. We need LESS government, not more of it. While not everyone SEES where the wealthy spend their money, believe me it does get spent because they From: someone get an accountant who knows what he or she is doing and they can be significant

And, just in terms of accessibility, the government has a far greater ability to reach and distribute funds to those in need. Which they have shown to be totally incapable of doing effectively. They don't encourage people to better themselves with a helping hand, they use class warfare and tell the have nots that the haves are evil and should not keep what they have earned, and 'WE" are your only hope. "WE" will take from them and give to you, just enough to keep you coming back to us. Meanwhile they run off with the bulk of the booty.

Plus, there tax breaks for qualified personal donations...get an accountant who knows what he or she is doing and they can be significant. Except that as your income goes up, there are limits put on your itemized deductions. I lose many of the tax benefits of my deductions these days, but I still give anyway. You are correct in that many people that could help simply do not. There are many greedy and selfish people, but we still need some better answers as the system we have now is not really working properly. I get so irate at the waste I see in government and the people I see fighting tooth and nail to get the help they should be able to get. There really are some in government that wish to truly help society and that is why they go into government, but the vast majority are either already corrupt or get corrupted by the system and then they are worthless at truly helping anymore. I don't have the solution (other than maybe another revolution and start all over), but what we have created has turned into a horrid monster and I think it now causes more problems than it solves.

May I humbly suggest that this topic be moved to a different thread? The Never Ending Thread is supposed to be a haven, and this topic is a landmine already going off.

Anywhere else and it gets closed. At least we're playing nice about it, instead of being ugly like during the election

I do hope we are all adult enough and friends enough to be able to have political discussions on differing sides and not resort to low down name calling- the Peace of the Thread must prevail. Re: From: someone by Ann Launay <snip>"The government wants to take my money and give it to those lazy asses" attitude that seems so prevalent. Yes, there are those who manipulate the system, but there are also many, many people who are doing the best they can and still need help. And, often enough, government programs are the only way they can get that help. It's true you hear that from some people and that is wrong too- I agree, not every one on welfare is a lazy ass but sadly some people will - as we know from SL and bots etc- "game the system". A long time ago, after my father died, I took my mom to the local welfare office where she had to report every so often for what ever thing it was- Medicaid I think, dont recall now- anyway, there was a woman there waiting her turn, covered in more gold then Mayor's Jewelers discussing where she wanted her welfare check sent while she went on vacation... and there was not a damn thing wrong you could see with her that she shdnt have been holding down at least a min wage job. I find the idea of communism in its best definition- sharing and community- to be a Polyanna dream- it is not in our nature. We fight and claw and rend for every thing - we wear a lovely veneer of civilization, but the beast is but a scratch 'neath. And I want you to know, I am normally a very giving and non-competitive person.

From: Ann Launay So what then? Stop helping people at all until the government gets around to (ha!) some reforms? Cross our fingers that their local communities will offer sufficient help in the meantime? Yes. It probably would be just as effective as the current wasteful system is. It's broken. And it doesn't matter which party is in power, they both are cut from the same cloth. The focus has to shift to local resources, at the state and city level instead of the Lumbering Federal Money Pit. Encourage more Private Charities, give people the choice of where their money is spent. Iam tired of seeing my property Taxes, Income Taxes, Social security Taxes and everything going up, and seeing absolutely nothing for it.

From: Brenda Connolly Yes, because you guys have found the perfect social utopia. Uhm.. does that take into account the neighborhoods with the 'foreigners' that seem to be swallowing up Europe as well?

I don't even know what the bit about accountants was supposed to mean. That the wealthy do exactly what you suggested - they get the tax breaks by giving to charity. Do we care if they get a tax break, as long as they do the "right thing"? And no, I'm still not convinced that our "government" has the resources. I do think that the various charities have the resources, and that's where I'd prefer my money go - not to the government, who will just pay $650 for a freaking screwdriver.

Yes, we are sometimes bad about that. We innocently comment on something and the next thing you know, many of us are on our social/political soap boxes. So.... a funny:
