I think a lot of U.S.ers still think that what pre-industrial agricultural workers ate is a normal American diet.

I bet we'd be surprised at how LITTLE they ate. Don't forget that pre-industrial peoples were all a good few inches shorter than us now, and smaller in general. I haven't seen studies, but I'm pretty sure we're all bigger and taller in general than even people in the 1920's and 1930's. Have you ever been to an old-fashioned, refurbished theater, with the original seats? They're TINY! And I'm not huge, being only 5'4" and average weight.

I honestly think that the scientists who came up with this "gotta consume 2200 calories to survive" thing overdid it. Good Lord. If I ate 2200 calories/day, I'd be HUGE.

It used to be that one chicken could feed at least 4 people, usually with leftovers. I bet that pre-industrial people, even the hard physical laborers, ate far less than we do today.

Hiya folks.
Mum told me this morning that we're gonna be moving house. Not sure Im a huge fan of the idea, but meh...
Means that for a couple of weeks I could be around a bit less while we pack up :( I just hope the interwebs switches over ok...
Hugs Claire! There's a lot about moving that's a drag. The packing and unpacking can really be hard work and even when you're going to a much nicer place, on some level it feels like losing your home. I hope the fun of a fresh start in a new place makes it all worth while for you.

Barely - I heard they called Obama the winner within 2 seconds of the west coast polls closing.

Yeah so did NBC. Granted, every single state on the West coast is a blue state and has been forever, and with Cali's 55 electoral votes, that automatically put Obama over the edge.

Thanks Mo, for breakfast! Looks splendiferous!

Claire; just think... this is a chance to throw away that nasty pair of stinky old trainers that are sitting at the back of your closet that you haven't had the heart to throw away because you might actually get out and start jogging again one of these days but haven't because you're much too busy with school and friends and SL, and oh, you promise yourself you'll go TOMORROW and start a new workout routine but then tomorrow comes and you're just so dang tired and oh look! it's raining out and you don't have proper running in the rain clothes, so to heck with it all you'll just go log in, just for a second, to see what everyone's saying while the rain clears up...

:p

I end up throwing away/giving away a ton of stuff when I move. It's sort of nice, actually.

I must say you make very good points here. I too would be huge if I ate anything like 2200 calories a day. Even when I was getting hours of serious exercise every day. On the other hand, people like professional cyclists, can need more than that, and farming by hand is very hard work.
But perhaps the huge meat and potato meals around the farmhouse kitchen table three times a day are a bit of an idealized myth. Probably a lot of farms were not that prosperous.
I remember back in the 50's when I was a kid, people used to talk about the future when scientists would invent a pill we could take to get all our nutrition and we wouldn't have to bother with food. Like that would be a good thing. So I guess back then eating was more something you had to do because you got hungry. Now we all wish there were a pill we could take that would allow us to enjoy stuffing our faces all day without gaining weight

On calories: at my last job they recommended eating 6000 calories a day. Not making this up. What's scarier, is I was actually above that and still lost weight at first.

Yesterday was my Friday cuz I am off today

I woke up today and it was 30 degrees out side (-1 C) with a clear sky. The air is crisp and still. It is the perfect day to stay home in our sleep clothes, make a cup of hot chocolate and snuggle under a blanket on the couch by the fire. And here I am at work when I should be holding you. Wrestling and tickeling because you put your cold feet against my thighs.I would steal the blanket away until a playful pout made me give in and wrap you in y arms under the blanket and cover your face with kisses.
