It is no problem for LL to change your name and it has happened in the past. A couple of Lindens have stated at one time or another that it is either impossible or very hard to do and not perfect as in the case of Torley Linden. It's all BS and if you are the right person and know the right people then LL can change your name quickly and easily.

http://secondlife.wikia.com/wiki/Garth_FairChang

"Formerly Garth Fairlight. Started in SL 24th June 2003

Married in SL and RL to Pituca FairChang (formerly Pituca Chang)"

In this case it is clear to see that they not only changed the name of one person but two and if you search, you will also find that it is an exclusive last name.
That wasn't a name *change*. Tha was creation of new accounts. The FairChangs bought and paid for a "Corporate surname", and created whole new accounts to run their land rental business with.

Look here for details:

https://support.secondlife.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=4417

From: someone
Upon creation of a Custom Surname, the account designated as owner is billed a $500 Setup fee plus the first annual $500 fee. On each anniversary date, the owner is billed $500 to retain Custom Surname ownership. Last names must clearly be an organizational or corporate name, and distinguished from personal last names. For example, Smith is not acceptable, but SmithCorp, SmithInc, SmithProducts or SmithConstruction are. Names that are clearly composite or made up (SecondLife, Agilent) will be considered.
For a major SL Business owner, it can be worth it to be able to create accounts with a surname that is only available to YOUR employees. For individuals, it is insanely expensive, and still can't create a "normal surname" of your choice.

=====

Celebrities and real-world VIP's that want to use their own name inside SL can get a "Vanity Name":

From: someone
Custom Vanity Name

At this time, Vanity Names are available at Linden Lab's discretion, generally for events that involve major press or tv coverage, or that in our estimation provide significant publicity value, such as nationwide TV coverage. Upon creation of an approved Vanity Name, the designated owner will be billed a $50 setup fee plus the first annual $50 fee. On each anniversary date, the owner is billed $50 to retain Vanity Name account ownership.

Vanity Name requests must reflect Real Life names. Please no requests for Santa Claus, President Lincoln etc.
In some cases, a Vanity Name may already exist and we will not be able to create it for you.
Approved Non-profit and Educational requests will receive a 30% discount on these fees.
Custom Vanity Name form
Please complete the requested information and email to sldevnames@lists.lindenlab.com.

Requested Vanity Name:
RL name of Vanity Name owner:
SL name of Vanity Name owner:
Email of requestor:
Contact information pertaining to copyright or trademark:
Event or reason for name (size of event, accompanying publicity/audience):
So for example if a pop singer was going to do a concert in SL, they could get a vanity name created and approved for a new SL account, that they could use for that special in-world event and subsequent events.

=====

In either of the above cases, you must pay setup fees and ongoing annual fees to obtain and maintain these names, over and above any election to go Premium or not.

All this being stated, the fact remains that if the Lindens WANT to, thay can certainly change a name on an account! For example, they routinely change first names that they find "offensive", often with no input from the account owner on what it should change to. (A forum poster formerly named "Gaybot" comes to mind...) And they are perfectly willing to change an eror in capitalization (but not spelling) of a given name. For example, changing "mary Stuart" to "Mary Stuart".

Actually, I don't think you're correct about that. Garth and Pituca got SL married in 2003, way before the Corporate Surname program was instituted.

I'm not sure if it was that they created new accounts and LL gave them an exclusive last name at the time or if they had their names "changed", but it definitely wasn't as something they paid for as part of the Corporate Surname thing.

Besides, they did it for Love, not Money :)

XD I think none of you have it as bad as me. My name is one big screw up.

First off, I had no idea Flo was a girl's name. It doesn't sound like it at all (no offense to any RL Flo's here...) and my last name...Moran... what the heck was I thinking!? Oh well, I've already invested a lot of time on this account, no turning back

You're not the only guy I've met inworld with the first name Flo. And it didn't occur to me at all, until you mentioned it here, that it's a female name. I certainly never met a woman called Flo before.

As for myself, I wouldn't change my name even if I was offered money to do so. Except once, briefly, when the surname "Kiwi" came up on the list and I was so tempted to make an alt. But "Karl Kiwi" was already taken.

It's short for Florence. My Grandmother was named Florence.

I absolutely cannot stand my last name.

"Chuwen"? Know how many jokes I've gotten from it? Oi.

It was a total mistake. By time time I actually found a combination that went through I didn't care what the last name was till I thought about it days later.

I've thought about changing it and, since I read to find a link to an easy-to-check site, I might keep an eye out for a better last name. I didn't know there was a page you could check for name availability. I did mine one last name at a time. It was terrible.

Torley's main account is still there, The linden last name along with his torley first name are 100% diffrent accounts. but same person. and maybe one time they could of done it easily as I dont think they where using random uuid's then. unlike now. now it would be a major pain as some of us have 50k items or more. all uuid's assoicated with the account have to be changed. that is a process in it's self.
What name are you thinking of?
I think Torley was Torley Torgeson. There doesn't seem to be a Torley Torgeson. Old forum posts that show now as having been made by Torley Linden were actually posted showing the name Torley Torgeson.

They should authorize a mandate to change all those stupid, ridiculous names such as names in sentences, those with numbers and symbols, those dumb extra long names and all those other ones people think of as being cute or funny which they're not. This is what they should do.

awww but i like my cute name!

I like my name. I guess this is one environment where we can actually choose what we would like to be called. How many of us would like to be called by our sl name in rl?
I could handle mine - could you live with yours?

I find my last name to be offensive. I was an idiot and assumed it meant what it sounds like when I chose it. LL will not let me change it. It's the thing that bothers me the most in SL. Unfortunately, I have this as an established account with all of my stuff, but I swear, I'm going to make an alt someday and just abandon the time I have invested in Trout. That's going to be a sad day for me when I finally get fed up enough to pull the trigger.

I like your name. 'Recreant' coupled with 'Trout' has a sort of quirky, slightly naughty or mischievous quality, which could be more pulse-quickening than meets the eye.

(sounds like a Saltair rating for names... )

anyway, I like it. Sorry to hear you don't. :¬(

There's been plenty of times when I've been called Mari in my first life, too. It works fine, all in all.

I've mentioned before that my name was considered for all of maybe five minutes. I found a last name that would work, the first name came to me off the top of my head, an I went with it. Maybe I got lucky.

My SL name is my RL name.

Although it wasn't always my RL name.

i used the name "Hana" online for just over 5 years before i legally changed my RL first name to Hana.

So yes.. i \really\ had a big desire to always be called my "SL name" in RL.. so much so i legally changed my name to it. Well.. not the "Timtam" part. ;) just the Hana part.

A mate of mine called Tony married a girl named Florence and honeymooned in Italy in the city of the same name. The Best Man's speech started off "Tony, I hope you enjoy it in Florence"
