A friend wants to change his first name.

Is there a way to do this?

no

he could create a new account

if he has a well established account then no

I do know of instances where SL capitalized the first letter of someone's name, but never changed it completely

They have also changed otherwise "offensive" names.

Like I said "changed" -- No idea if they still are or would in that instance. I assume they might in some cases still, as I do see offensive name on the police blo... um... incident report thing.

Frankly, I do feel sorry for the n00b I saw over the weekend, with the first name "Penis."

The possibilities are endless, and the poor schmuck has only himself to blame.

Aside from retiring in shame and coming back as an alt, his best tactic is to tell people, "My friends all call me Peter".

The only time LL will change a user's name because the User requests it is if the user requests the capitalization be changed. IE: Change "bill" to "Bill". No other changes are allowed as a request.

LL reserves the right to *force* a change on users if they requested something objectionable when they signed up for the account. So if somone created a really obscene first name... And someone complained later... They may change it to something LL deems "less objectionable".

If you are currently "Bill MacLure" and you would rather be "Roger MacLure", you have to create a new account before the "MacLure" surname is closed for new requests. You could then transfer any transferrable assets, sell any land the old one owns from the old account to the new one, and transfer any L$ balance frm one to the other. Any no-transfer items will not be able to be transferred, and you'll need to replace those with new ones.

I find my last name to be offensive. I was an idiot and assumed it meant what it sounds like when I chose it. LL will not let me change it. It's the thing that bothers me the most in SL. Unfortunately, I have this as an established account with all of my stuff, but I swear, I'm going to make an alt someday and just abandon the time I have invested in Trout. That's going to be a sad day for me when I finally get fed up enough to pull the trigger.

They should authorize a mandate to change all those stupid, ridiculous names such as names in sentences, those with numbers and symbols, those dumb extra long names and all those other ones people think of as being cute or funny which they're not. This is what they should do.

I swear, I was half convinced I'd met your alt (or maybe your prime, he had an earlier birthdate than I recall for you) last night. This guy was a pilot, liked biplanes, claimed he crashed a lot, had a quirky sense of humor, and invited me to go dancing at Frank's.

Physically, you aren't much alike. This fellow looks more like Smilin' Jack, or a young Howard Hughes.

If you have an EAA biplane in your inventory, I'm going to be totally spooked out. And if you don't, I have one for you.

Although Ricardo was successfully able to persuade LL to change his name from Eeyore Downer, claiming he had registered it by mistake and that people would unfairly pigeonhole him as a relentlessly morose so-and-so purely on the strength of the name.

A quick search reveals about 48 avs with such a first name.

Among the more spectacular combinations are those with a last name of Little, Maximus, Mighty and Short

Not me. I have an alt for the party this weekend, and I have Carteltrustaccount Mumfuzz, but the only one of us that can fly is Trout. Unfortunately, none of us can land. My standard biplane is the little red Biyoma Biplane. I own a few other flying vehicles, but that's the only biplane. I'm not familiar with the EAA Biplane.

I'll go dancing with you at Frank's, though.

I think having a one off "Name Amnesty" would be a great thing for many people - a one time chance to pick a new first name and optionally select a different surname from the current list.

I would not change mine - I love my name but I have seen a few people who might jump at that chance. They could even charge for it.

I like your name - its very original and distinctive - though I guess the fish jokes could start to wear a bit thin after a while :(

Let's all sign a "Re-Name Trout Recreant" petition and send it to LL.

Trout, just to get the ball rolling, go have a look on SL Name Watch and pick out three or four surnames that you like that have "Trout" available as a first name.

And being the Cartel Mouthpiece, you could draft up the petition all nice and legal-sounding, too.

We'll put it up as a poll post, with responders listed. That can constitute our "signatures". Then we'll set fire to an unused forum or something, to call it to LL's attention.

If you think you have it bad, think of all the people who took "Quisling" as a last name. At least you aren't named after a nazi war criminal.
