"Your Second Life avatar and account name is your account, for all intents and purposes. Your avatar's appearance, inventory, friends, L$ balance, etc. are all tied to the name you've chosen. As a result, while you may create additional Second Life accounts, Linden Lab is unable to rename an existing account." How can that be true and them still correct lower case names and rude words? In fact I would suspect it is as easy as just changing the name field in a database table because otherwise it would be easier to force the lower case name people and the people with rude first names to create a new avatar.

No, they can change names..........And they do. Why shouldnt they? Its a business for them if clients wnats to pay monies to do that action why would they care. If they charging to do. Its man power is the issue. But if said person is paying to do the change why would LLABS object? They do this service reguardless what they claim to say. Seen it happen.

I tried to create an alt recently and noticed that some common 1st names are in fact not available at all with any combination of 2nd name. (It gives this message ' The first name you have chosen is not available with any of the current last names.')
Anyone any idea why LL would be doing this....is there some way theyre making money from it?
I had to come up with a real mad name in the end, its no surprise that there are variations on John1895 and Jane2485.

I know for a fee they do sometimes personalized names but how much,etc no clue. That's exactly what I thought as well. I had "miscreant" in my vocabulary, but not "recreant". I didn't make the connection until I had a lot of time and cash spent on this account. Starting over because LL snuck a really mean name in on me seems terribly unfair. At any rate, it's apparent they CAN change names if they want. They do it for offensive names. I understand why they don't want to set the precedent, though. Maybe they could sell me a custom name after the fact. What's the going rate on custom names, (keeping in mind that I'm really short on cash these days)? Maybe they could sell me a non-custom name for a discount.

Visit http://www.slnamewatch.comIt will make finding a name combination you like much easier. What that message means is just what it says. Say you want the first name "Caroline". If there is already a "Caroline [Lastname]" for every currently active surname, you get this message.

From: Trout Recreant I find my last name to be offensive. I was an idiot and assumed it meant what it sounds like when I chose it. LL will not let me change it. It's the thing that bothers me the most in SL. Unfortunately, I have this as an established account with all of my stuff, but I swear, I'm going to make an alt someday and just abandon the time I have invested in Trout. That's going to be a sad day for me when I finally get fed up enough to pull the trigger. Trout - you could choose to use the old Middle English definition of Recreant, which means - "to yield in a trial by combat". That, in context with Trout in front of it, makes me think of a Trout (fish) that finally got caught after a noble and exhausting fight on the line  No shame in that, man

Yes, but the actual link between all of the items should really be physically stored using the UUID of your avatar and not the character name - with the actual character name really only being stored in one location. They have made some interesting design decisions, but if they really are using the true character name throughout the entire system to tie things together, then their Developers and/or DBAs are farther beyond help than I thought. edited to add: Actually just thought of one approach, where the UUID is actually generated from the name itself, then yes, there would be some major data updates if the name changed -- and that is a distinct possibility.
