Makes you wonder what they were thinking coming up with some of the names - shouldn't they now at least offer a name change if something could be considered *broadly offensive* by some perhaps?

If you think you have it bad, think of all the people who took "Quisling" as a last name. At least you aren't named after a nazi war criminal.

That's a good point. What on earth was LL thinking? It's almost like they are trying to trick people. I'm not making excuses for not having "Recreant" in my vocabulary. I could have googled it or something, but I didn't. At any rate, I don't think a petition would work. LL doesn't read the forums, and I doubt they care about whether I'm upset or not. It's not like I'm anyone important to them.

It does sound good and I thought that too (read up) but after finding out what it meant I agree with Trout - it seems like some names are like traps for the unwary.

They should authorize a mandate to change all those stupid, ridiculous names such as names in sentences, those with numbers and symbols, those dumb extra long names and all those other ones people think of as being cute or funny which they're not. This is what they should do.

Let us know how that works out for you. :p

That'll be our legal position. We can prove (through a forum post search) that his last name has caused Mr. Recreant significant pain and mental anguish. (We could try for a plea of actual insanity, but that might be pushing it).

Come on, Trout...even if we don't win, we can have some fun trying. :D

I find my last name to be offensive. I was an idiot and assumed it meant what it sounds like when I chose it. LL will not let me change it. It's the thing that bothers me the most in SL. Unfortunately, I have this as an established account with all of my stuff, but I swear, I'm going to make an alt someday and just abandon the time I have invested in Trout. That's going to be a sad day for me when I finally get fed up enough to pull the trigger.

Welcome to the club. I'm living with it for over 4 years now. (Sorry I wasn't that well versed on American cults when i joined.)
Although 'creator of things' is quite appropriate, I wish it wasn't Scientology related.

hahaha I like it, lets hope they don't try and palm him off with a worse name. Though maybe just a slight change would suffice from recreant -> recreate ?

Now that I've complained, I'll probably log on to find that I'm Trout Hitler or Trout bin Laden or something. Trout Coprophile. Recreate and recreation were what I was thinking when I picked the name. I am recreating my life and enjoying every second of it. Sounds good, right? DOH!

I think it's time LL starts repairing some of the last names.

The recreant family can become recreationalists.

And please, one of my annoyances. Let them change Reitveld into Rietveld. If you add the name of a famous dutch architect/artist, SPELL IT RIGHT.

I think if they give you another problem name it would not be obvious like Hitler - it would be "miscreant" or some subtlely good sounding name with a bad conotation.

Why not - if I make a big enough stir, they'll really punish me. Trout McPoopypants or something. It's not like I can do anything about it, right? Might as well make it truly awful. Trout Convictedfelon or Trout Tinywilly or something equally humiliating. That will teach me to raise a stink. lol. Trout Terribleinbed. Damn Lindens. They haven't even punished me yet and I already resent them.

I'd like Trout Buhner, named after the greatest left fielder in the history of baseball, Jay Buhner.

Well, it's generally LL's lack of attention to detail, which is the culprit here.

I'm expecting Trout to end up being named Trout Hilter. (Or he's lucky and ends up with his personal preference: Trout Bunhere)

Ahh, but Trout Terribleinbed would give you the pity angle. And there would always be those who would want to 'teach' you or see for themselves.
lol.

Good point. Trout Thinksheisgaybutmaybeyoucancurehimifyouarereallygood. lol. Nice angle. I don't think I could pull that off. I know I'm kind of a douche, but I'm not THAT bad.

I love it. PLEASE, LL, Please! I'll be so good. You'll never hear a peep from me again and I'll buy some land so I can pay you tier. I live in the US, but if you want to charge me VAT, I'm cool with that. /me drops to his knees and begins sobbing uncontrollably. PleasePleasePleasePleasePleasePleasePleasePlease oh please.

I'm begging here. Come on guys. You snuck "Recreant" in there and it means something awful. You've had your fun. Now how about cutting me a break. I've been in your corner lots of times when people were picking on you. How about cutting me a break?

You have my email address. In all seriousness, I'd be LL's biggest fanboi ever if they just cut me a break on this one.

XD I think none of you have it as bad as me. My name is one big screw up.

First off, I had no idea Flo was a girl's name. It doesn't sound like it at all (no offense to any RL Flo's here...) and my last name...Moran... what the heck was I thinking!? Oh well, I've already invested a lot of time on this account, no turning back

so, not at the moment is the general consensus...

But my next question is, how complicated would this be? Would they just need to backspace over your current name and enter in your new name and thats it? Or would every cube you have ever glued to another and created a choo choo train need to be somehow modified to incorporate your latest moniker. If its the former, then CHARGE US for the privalage and be done with it. If its the latter, it aint gonna happen anytime soon.

It depends on how LL's database is set up. If it uses the avatar name to generate the primary key (see the discussion on "how to kill your business without trying";) then yes, they'd have to change every single thing in SL that has your name on it, and give each and every thing a new primary key to reflect the change. Which has got to be a hassle, which is why I guess they charge $100 for it, or whatever they charge these days.

If the avatar name fields are not used to create the primary key, then it should be easy enough, just backspacing. ;)

I like the sound of your name but I wonder how much it cost if you wanted personalized name like Trout Fisherman or Trout Fishing? Being not the brightest cookie in cook book I thought recreant was another way to say recreate.
I know for a fee they do sometimes personalized names but how much, etc no clue.

Flo is the diminutive of Florence (also Flora, but not so common)... ah for want of a 'w' and you could have a go a being a 30's era PI

odlly I got something similar to recreation (as in relaxing) for trouts last name, thinking it might be an odd twist meaning 'one who engages in recreational activities'.... turns out it's a french root meaning to give up, with connotations of disloyalty and cowardice.... (term used for one for forfeited a trial by combat, basically dropping their allegience to whatever they were supposed to fight for)

Dunno if anyone's posted this yet, but this is from the Knowledge Base:

"Your Second Life avatar and account name is your account, for all intents and purposes. Your avatar's appearance, inventory, friends, L$ balance, etc. are all tied to the name you've chosen. As a result, while you may create additional Second Life accounts, Linden Lab is unable to rename an existing account."
