I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

No, that's where Trout lives...

Sigh. OK, I'll put it in. But that's the LAST one.

Good God.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry. Thanks everyone for really making my week! Now if we could just get LL to help out a little. I really love Trout Spoken, Trout Law, and actually, almost all of them. Trout Steelhead rocks.

Unfortunately, I really think it's a lost cause. I'm just one guy out of millions of residents and they have no reason to make an exception for me whether it would be for one of the awesome suggestions listed here or just any other available (non-offensive) run of the mill last name. I wish they'd show a little mercy on this one, though.

Edit: Trout Certified! YES!

I think having a one off "Name Amnesty" would be a great thing for many people - a one time chance to pick a new first name and optionally select a different surname from the current list.
[rant]

WHAT ???
allow members to have a greater choice in what they call themselves ??
are you crazy ?

in the time it takes to recover from the latest crash, you'd have people suggesting that SL follows Myspace, Facebook etc and allow members to use their real names, and then you know what would happen! SL would fulfil it's potential and turn into a successful social networking site fully integrated with RL commercial and educational organisations, instead of struggling on as a fascinating niche game for frustrated graphics artists, with limited appeal to the rest of the world other than as a sex curio left over from the early years of the C21st -- it might even lose it's virtual fantasy reputation and become a fully-fledged virtual reality, and then where would you be?

just be grateful you're allowed a name, and that LL doesn't allocate you a number

Boellstorff says it's impossible to imagine all the changes that are coming to virtual worlds -- given the choice, what sort of person is it who's prepared to move to a world where you're not allowed to use your own name? this is a right so basic it isn't even thought necessary to include it in our lists of freedoms

come on Philip, Torley et al, stop treating SL like you're overseeing a lucrative adventure playground for people with learning problems

GROW UP, THINK BIG, LET GO

[/rant]

sorry... but problems re the use of names is particlarly relevant for me in RL, and to have to plead for the right to change one's name seems particularly demeaning -- also this was the most relevant thread i could come up with in the search in the time available -- and i haven't the endurance to tackle JIRA... is it just me, or is it even slower than the rest of secondlife.com? trying to navigate there is like swimming thru treacle -- makes me wonder whether SL lag isn't so much a technical problem as an environmental constant lol

Sorry to resurrect a dead thread, but has there been any news on the possibility of allowing name changes, maybe on a once-a-year or pay-per-change basis?

One of the stated reasons for not allowing this is to prevent griefing, but of course the griefers will find other ways to cause trouble, so I don't see why allowing legitimate changes should be a big deal.

I could see it happening if they charged a reasonable fee - $20 perhaps - and allowed it to occur only once per account. To further confound the griefers, an account with a disciplinary mark against it would not be allowed to use the service.

Another option would be to allow a change of the first name, instead of the surname. You know, in case you've ended up as MaryElven576 or something. :) But either way, one change per account only.

Nothing has changed regarding name changes.

I'd be someplace else. Those things you describe SL as are ther resons I am in it. If i wanted to be in MyFaceSpaceBook I would be. I don't. I have absoulutely NO use for any of that. Real Names, you probably want real faces on avatars too.

Well, I am in FB, and I have two blogs, and I do networking of various types. And, admittedly, I do a fair amount of it here in SL land too.

But I would be against SL becoming the next FB or MySpace because you would have to dumb down the environment to accomplish it. Networking sites are not virtual environments, per se. They are simply web pages with some interesting scripting behind them.

I wouldn't worry about it. The folks who keep making the FB/MySpace comparisons are the same ones who keep referring to SL as a "game" ... when, clearly, it's neither, and in fact, is more than either could ever be.

Sorry to have opened a can of worms, there. I don't know how we got on the Real names/FB/MySpace angle, but I'm really just interested in a change of first name to use a nickname I've picked up in SL.

I believe I received a poll from SL a while back, asking about what I thought about being charged L$20 for a name change. I was just hoping that something had come of that poll. (Wish I could change my answers now too, as at the time I said I wasn't interested.)

You didn't open a can of worms. It's a legit question. I don't think LL has any intention of ever changing this rule, though. So if you don't like what you've got, you're out of luck.

I'd pay $20.00 and be happy to do it, but that's just not going to happen.

But $20, not L$20. Big difference.

Actually I usually refer to SL as a game.... :p

As far as those other places go, I see nothing wrong with them. They just don't interest me.

I don't remember the one I took being that specific...it just asked if I'd be willing to pay for such a thing, without a dollar amount attached.

It is no problem for LL to change your name and it has happened in the past. A couple of Lindens have stated at one time or another that it is either impossible or very hard to do and not perfect as in the case of Torley Linden. It's all BS and if you are the right person and know the right people then LL can change your name quickly and easily.

http://secondlife.wikia.com/wiki/Garth_FairChang

"Formerly Garth Fairlight. Started in SL 24th June 2003

Married in SL and RL to Pituca FairChang (formerly Pituca Chang)"

In this case it is clear to see that they not only changed the name of one person but two and if you search, you will also find that it is an exclusive last name.

Still cant hurt to ask - the worse that can happen is its too much or they say no.

The thing about torley's name is in correct. Torley's main account is still there, The linden last name along with his torley first name are 100% diffrent accounts. but same person. and maybe one time they could of done it easily as I dont think they where using random uuid's then. unlike now. now it would be a major pain as some of us have 50k items or more. all uuid's assoicated with the account have to be changed. that is a process in it's self.
