From: ConductorX Nieuport I am also hampered by the restrictions of Mainland in that it isn't Havoc 4 so I can't go above 750m. Mainland is Havok 4 (all sims get the same server updates) and you can indeed go over 768m. You always could, really -- it's just a lot easier now. nevertheless, sorry to hear about dis -- an, if anyting, I certainly wish you luck in all future plans! Mari

From: Rioko Bamaisin Do we really care? Amen. Amusing trolling, but not even half as entertaining as a Jumpy.

I guess I need to learn more about how this works. I was in the normal viewer and I was sent a TP to a location above 4000m. I went with no problem. When I attempted to do this on my sim I couldn't fly or travel that high, naturally I assumed my SIM was defective not the pilot. "CX"

Hi CX...just got here...SO SORRY, but I understand completely. Your build is AMAZING. Gotta go take me some more pics! And I also want to thank you for generously hosting those Sunday night pool parties. They were a great way to close out a weekend. /me searches through address book for other residents with pools...

From: ConductorX Nieuport I didn't advertise with classifieds, because I don't see the value. I really didn't need to make a profit. I just liked the idea of business. I have to comment here about this: what is your idea of business? Marketing is the singularly most challenging aspect of business and you seemed to ignore it. How did you try to market yourself? "If you build it they will come" really doesn't apply in SL without marketing. I am asking this as a post-mortem because you're going to need to know for the next time you decide to venture into a business. I spend about 2/3 of what Rioko does for classifieds in total advertising, between classifieds and inworld rental directories, on a weekly basis. I might increase that as I try other avenues of marketing (e.g., an ad in Prim Perfect). I like to think that I am successful, in large part because I treat this aspect of the business like a business. In getting started, I did a lot of market research as to what is competitive pricing and had a good sense of valuation. I still do a lot of market research, so that I remain competitive. I don't know what kind of research you did and I don't know what your offerings are, but I'll tell you right now that if you don't do a better job of getting yourself out there, even developing a full sim at the discounted rate won't help you.

I agree Cris..the marketing aspect of SL is crucial to anything where you need to earn money back or want to make money. This is a great example of a wonderful person with a wonderful build and without marketing it goes poof which is very sad.
This also flies in the face of all the nonsense about not optimizing your sim, store, etc in search. Optimizing isnt about cheating anyone, it is about making your stuff KNOWN. If it isnt known, then it becomes all work, little satisfaction and a very costly hobby. Ive gone through this with my own marketing for my store(s), my sims, etc. At times if feels like the effort is just too much and then i try something else that pays off and it becomes clear that success grows little by little.
To the OP, if you need some help and have any chance of staying open, please im me in world...im happy to share transcripts of the class i teach on increasing traffic and marketing and to share any other hints i can. This offer is open to anyone else as well. I just hate to see good stuff go away...

CX...
I like the idea of a Volkswagen dealership. But why not expand that? There are not a lot of vehicle sellers in SL, especially GOOD vehicles. Cubey Terra for aircraft, Trudeau for sailboats, a couple of good car makers...
Make things that go!
I'm convinced that, on a per-square-meter basis, content sellers make more than landlords, at least if their content is original and of good quality. Besides, you can test the waters without ANY land or a store, by selling the products on SLX and OnRez first.

The 6144 that I use to sell houses wayyyy outearns its equivalent tier, even at the non-discounted rate. Now that I'm pretty much done with development (although I'm fighting a certain expansion itch), I am putting time into cleaning up my store.

My idea of business is to provide a unique service experience to my customers. What ever it takes. I wasn't really doing this so much for profit as a learning experience. Everyone that rented from me told me how welcome I made them feel, what great service and information I provided and how beautiful the build was. In this fast food day and age where service does not exist I found I enjoy that aspect most of all. My closing down is not sour grapes or complaint just a refocus of priorities in RL and SL. I have a set SL budget and rather that spend the money on ads to generate profit, I threw pool parties and had fun. I learned a lot too. Who knows if Rio can gen up another pool house for me the parties may continue. "CX"

"CX" CX, I am not suggesting that your closing is sour grapes or complaining. Even if you didn't care about profit, you can't provide great service if no one knows that you exist. You could have priced your offerings at breakeven rates or less and it still wouldn't matter. You should be proud of offering great service. But you could have used your SL budget more effectively, even if it was to just break even.

Jack,
Fenland West.
Everyone,
The pool parties won't be the same without Syn, she is the driving force behind the fun.
She is booked up with me for June 1st, June 8th and the 15th. I didn't say I was destitute either, I'll happily pay for Syn's services at future parties.

For what it's worth, CX, I agree with Cristalle. You seem frustrated that you don't have any enough renters, yet you didn't fully explore the opportunities for drumming up tenants.
At any rate, I'm sorry you are letting the Bourbon Street build go - it is a very nice place - and I do hope your next endeavor gives you more of what you want and enjoy, whatever that might be.

Really with only three renters I was plenty busy. I don't want to give the impression of frustration either. I guess it sounds that way. Sorry Like I said it was a learning experience and I had tons of fun. "CX"

From: Isabeau Imako I think he said something about being Arnold. The pig from Green Acres? Sorry Conductor - that really bites. If it's any consolation, I rather love living in the rents. Feeding the $L cookie jar is much, much easier than making a regular payment towards a tier. Find a place to rent with a nice big pool and let the partays live on! One day I hope to attend one.

CX, Really sorry to hear this. But it seems like you have your head on your shoulders so to speak. And I am sure your next endeavor is going to be a great one! I will miss the pool parties, they are darn fun But maybe we wont have to miss them, who knows.... And there are plenty of people with pools Xerxes and I included but we need to get a few things done, first on our land. And I love it when Syn DJ's. And hate to say this but this thread is interesting. I am wanting to learn about buying sims and what all goes into it. I want to make a plan so to speak, and you can ask Z i have to think things through hehehe, but I do have a plan forming in the back of my head. Mine will be more for fun and more then likely not a whole sim either. Bec

Sorry to hear you are stepping away from the rental biz for now.. When I was doing it, it was less competitive and I still had a tough time filling my sim. BTW, Cel has been quoting a viral prank phone call since his first post. The "Who are you" was from the recorded prank and had nothing to actually do with you. Google "Arnold Calls Gateway" or go to the link below to see where he is getting his lame material from. http://www.stupidcollege.com/items/Calls-Gateway
