A Modest Proposal - Concerning "The Pornfield"

What do you consider to be pornography in the secondlife world?

Before you groan and sharpen your knives on this consider a recent documentary shown in Canada taht "exposes" the underbelly of sl and taht supports teh thesis that our world is little more than a clearing house for socially inadequate people who indulge in dark fantasies or sad relationships.

Also consider that SL has no choice but to present itself as an upmarket and vibrant social "library" of culture and debate. It wants corporations and mega-businesses to boost profit and ensure sl's survival. It needs youth to create a population taht will "live" in this world on a daily basis and will express/represent their artistic and social needs.

To make myself clear on my stance on this. My career is in the arts. I depend upon visual and aural artistic endeavours for my living. YOUR career may well be teh same. I DO support censorship in teh cases of depiction of minors in pornography and condemning "violent porn" as is recognized in UK as illegal.

I support the freedom of artistic expression (in all mediums) that does not promote hate or defilment or prejudice on a gratuitous basis. I believe teh human body is beautiful and worthy of depiction and that our world must be presented in all ways to all people. I am certain Sims taht restrict teh projection of teh human image clothed or unclothed are simply promoting an underground culture that is NOT invisible to the outside real world and that shames us.

How do we promote goodness here and a world worthy of teh arts and offers accessible relationships taht are not scarred by labels or behaviours that attract the attention of serious journalists and demean ourselves as members of sl? What limits must we endure if we are to be regarded as a viable "Brave New World"?

I find the desecration of the English language as pornographic or even more so than the images and acts portrayed in sl.

I don't know how you define good but my experience has been that SL really exposes how narrow our cultures have become.

If you use sex to sell beer: good
If you have user created sex in SL: bad

Maybe SL gives us a chance to reclaim our stuff: music, interaction, art, writing, and yes sex.

Before discussing censorship I think we have to question the assumption that the way it is now in FL is somehow right and good and needs protecting.

Has anyone noticed how many ads there are now during the day on TV for anti-depressants? Maybe people in SL didn't leave mainstream culture, it left us.

Oh that is so witty of you all. I type liek this coz it my musculature/nerves in my fingers. My speed or something also adds. I cant help it and I jus dont bother corrrecting everything I write anymore. Letters get lost coz I damaged my nerves in an illness and now get screwed up coz my fingers dont work at same pace as my brain. It' not intentional. I disagree not a jot with the principle espoused in your post and refuse to be drawn by your obviously intentional errors - communication is NOT just about the letters and words. Except, that is, for your assessment of Jig's ability to communicate effectively such that her arguments might be considered in a mature fashion.

I think it's all about degree.

Nudity in itself might or might not be pornographic. It depends on the individual depicted and what the viewer thinks about what they see. If people are adults and have been willingly photographed naked and realised that the pics might get published, then I see no harm.

Once, when I was at a nude beach a couple of years ago, a passing stranger snapshotted me with a camera phone. At the time I was a bit miffed but I didn't respond as I didn't want to create a scene (perhaps I'd already done that LOL). For all I know the pics might have appeared on the net though I haven't looked for them. I don't really care - if they made someone happy for a few moments, what the heck!

'teh' is usually a mere typo. 'U' is just an example of the evolution of language, like we say 'I'm' instead of 'I am'. Also, you said 'sl' when it should be 'SL'!

I don't know anything about porn... but I know what I like.

I hardly think the salvation of Second Life depends on restricting content--pornographic or otherwise. It very well may depend on high-profile promotion of commercial, educational, and artistic use of the platform. For that, there must be compelling business successes, quantified advantages for education, and art with relevance to more than its immediate benefactors. For art, that's hard to define, but we'll know it when we see it.
