Being a RL single person (as opposed to a SL pretend single person) I think the concept of adding more RL details to our profiles is awesome. Anybody who wasn't interested in meeting other RL single people could leave it blank. However, that would not stop the liars and sociopaths from filling out whatever they feel like, just like any other dating site

We went through this discussion on the adult policy. Proving identity is a hard problem online with no present solution.

Just throwing that out there. I don't think that it's a good reason NOT to add the extra RL options. People who wanna lie about it will do that whether there are extra boxes to check or not.

You're a guy, right?

You don't get it.
Hey!

I'm a guy, and I get it. Heck, I met my wife online. On a BBS. In the early '80s, when an online conversation was "you take turns calling up the BBS", and relationships were based on actual conversation... not search results.

Unfortunately, for many people, the fulfillment they seek seems to revolve around the less attractive human traits and vices.
Who are you calling human, human?

I apologise for the diatribe, but to be honest, I think LL know where their little experiment is going and have decided to take advantage of the niche market/demographic they have, rather than aim for one they repeatedly fail to attract.
Errr...

Linden Lab has consistently completely failed to recognize what their niche is, and blow people spending lots of money off in favor of trying to bring in augmentationists... like the whole push for business that's going on now.

This is just more of the same.

It's a virtual world that caters to dating, flirting and such in a 3d environment. There are even people who have had strictly online relationships via chat rooms. While I don't understand the reasoning, I can appreciate that this creates potential business.
What I don't get is how they expect anyone to get through their horrible web site and successfully download the client and log in.

I actually know a fair number of people who have moved off of SL to Facebook.
Isn't that like switching from Pizza to Unleaded?

the beautiful thing about this is they'll cock it up like everything else so when someone goes looking for a mid 30's female academic with her own income they'll get a 64 yo truck driver called steve whose avatar is a 16yo bimbette cheerleader lookalike interested in bukkake.

Not much different to find that 6foot, Elle MacPherson bodied 30yo Professional Single Lady is actually 5' 300pounds unemployed, seperated with 4 kids and looking for the next guy to milk a credit card & half a house from, while still screwing the Ex's.

Or finding out that Cute bunny furry you've been yiffing with is actually just a 20yo human female :)

If it is any consolation, I haven't received it either. But then my social life died entirely sometime in July . . .

Umm I haven't seen too many dating sites that list you RL phone number, most you don't even have to provide it to the service, except to verify sometimes.

I don't have any problem with any such system as long as it is opt in. I'm not worried about any single women on SL and in my area finding out I'm also single in the same area as them, skips a lot of game playing crap to connect with potential partners who may or may not be compatible.
If I was worried about it interfering with my main SL life I'd just use an alt.

Very bad idea. I do not want my RL details in my profile that I don't purposefully place there myself.

On-topic: for a primarily social environment SL is rather lacking in ways to actually let you meet other people who share interests beyond happening to be on a parcel at the same time though.

If the "interests" tab was overhauled and specifically searchable to allow things like searching for someone interested in "meeting" and "live music" then I don't think that would be such a bad thing to have.

And those interested in RL specifically could simply have that listed as an "interest" (or specifically look for other people interested in it).

Ok, this I can agree too :)

Ditto that. What Kitty said is quite sensible.

This would be my real concern.. whether or not it's info that's just "inserted" by LL (as mentioned by a few people), or whether it'll be an opt-in thing that we have control over. Personally, I wouldn't mind if the fields were made available so that we can fill in what we like, IF we like, but also have a corresponding checkbox to make that info searchable or not (seperate from the searchable profile button). I wouldn't mind sharing a few minor details in there, but I DO NOT want to be automatically placed in that narrowed-down search group that all the A/S/L types will be scouring for RL dates. It's already difficult enough to weed them out now, I certainly don't want to be swarmed by them.

AND, again, it's potentially dangerous. LL wants to be careful here: if they try to make too much public RL information mandatory, it will greatly increase the chance of someone getting hurt in RL.

An optional (relatively) benign and general RL section would be ok with me too. And yes, one should have the option of pulling it out of search -- and more effectively, I hope, than the current system for keeping one's basic profile inaccessible to search.

There's no point making RL information mandatory in any way because they still allow an infinite number of free anoymous alts to anyone, they have no RL information on 99% of SL residents.
