The point is,

Mrc, I'm not exactly sure what is the problem, but it seems to be something like "I made some sort of combat/weapons system over in the teen grid, and now I want to start making it here, and lots of people are being really mean to me."

If my interpretation is right, I'm guessing that you're hanging out with a lot of really immature people. Like Colette said, if you want to get respect or be respected, it's best to start out in a professional manner. Rent a little shop, make a name for it, and start selling your items. I've seen combat zones that have shopping areas as well; you might try selling there as well.

Ignore the losers and griefers. They'll eventually get bored and leave you alone.

Hia Mrc, welcome to the adult grid :)

I would ignore all the idiots griefing you. Ignore the rumors and AR anyone who goes too far and gets physical and just let it pass you by. Mute people who are harrassing you.
As for building/scripting whatever I would follow most people's advice and get an alt you can use so you wont be disturbed.Just don't tell anyone who the alt is linked to :)

Anyway, good luck with it all.

Ignore them. Your creativity is valuable and you will be appreciated here by the kind of people you want to know, I'm sure. Make an alt if you need some peace and quiet.

Hi Mrc - welcome to the forum :)

If you are making good content then do some research and market and sell it properly - don't give it away, (unless it's a present for your friends). Ignore griefers, mute them if they persist, and use an Alt as other people here have suggested. Stay cool and enjoy your SL - there are heaps of opportunities here; you make the most of them and good luck.

Geez some of the replies here :(

Agreed - some of the responses here are so puerile as to beggar belief. The same number of key strokes could have been used to welcome a new player who appears to be having a sorry experience on the adult grid.

Welcome Mrc - I can only echo the good advice given by more recent posters. Maybe take the opportunity to create a completely new identity and rise above the wannabes griefing you. And don't stress about some of the negative comments here - not everyone judges people on the superficial basis of whether they can spell or not. :)

+ me. There are some arsehole replies in this thread.

Mrc, I agree with a couple of the posts here; time to make a new start, perhaps? Whether you make a new identity or not, the important thing is to draw a line and move on in your own mind. If anyone gives you grief, just ignore them, don't show you are bothered, don't reply, and get on with enjoying the parts of SL you love.

I know some of the responses sounded harsh but is it such a bad thing to nudge people towards better spelling? As a non native english speaker myself I know its easy to make mistakes or typos but the difference is I try my best. There is a line where lack of skill turns into lack of common courtesy.

Hi Mrc, welcome to the main grid and the forums!

If you are making any sort of quality weapons system with the plan to give it away, I could see that you would catch a lot of grief from people who make other weapon systems. I mean, that plan threatens all of them, you see? If people like your free stuff, then they won't buy anyone else's. And if someone makes a RL income from selling their SL weapons systems, well then, things could get nasty, yes.

How about you develop your weapons system quietly, and meanwhile watch the scripting tips section of the forum to see if there's anyone there that seems nice and knowledgable about the sort of things you do. You might even search Scripting Tips for folks who have answered relevant questions in the past. Then approach that person or persons privately for some advice - most forumites are happy to give some time to look at new folks' products and give them ideas. That person(s) would be able to help you see whether it really would be better if you sold it (and perhaps help you figure out how to do that most easily). Or they might be able to give you some air cover if you decide to give it away - the scripters in the forums are pro's at giving scripts away!

I guess my main message is: if you're being griefed, don't go it alone.

I don't think any of us should make sweeping assumptions over the reasons behind poor spelling or grammar that we see in a forum. There could be dozens of contributing factors as to why an individual struggles, that have nothing to do with lack of courtesy.

I too was a little taken aback by some of the responses fired back at Mrc and it definately made me think twice before risking putting any posts forward myself.

We should all try hard to make an All Years Resolution to stick to the topic. :)

I would definitely join the advice to create an alt.
If you're using friends' land rather than a sandbox, then you have to choose your friends wisely.

I understand that the public sandboxes are complete zoos.
I should imagine that *anyone* toting a weapon would get even more attention from griefy types.
People are advised to ignore griefers so that they get bored and move on. Maybe the odds are that any weapon-toting avatar is a grief magnet in that they would be likely to respond and brighten up a griefer's day. It's like waving a big neon bling flag.

I've seen threads in the forums that suggest that weapons designers can be quite aggressive towards one another. What was that one about a weapon that automatically attacked anyone on a list of avatars that the designer did not love? :)

Bear in mind that most griefing is not personally directed. It's simply an expression of the griefers' inner disgust with their own lives.

I've never had a problem with public sandboxes. And they are all I use to build.
Though recently I have been building at about 800mtres high on my mystitool platform lol. that might have something to do with it...

Welcome Mrc. Remember there is no such thing as bad publicity. As long as people are trashing your name, they are talking about you. It is still better than being ignored. If you want anonymity, do as others have suggested and make an alt.

Ok, you are 18 now. It is time to start writing like an adult. Punctuation, capitalization, and an attempt at spelling are your friends.

I can only say omg when I read some of the replies in this thread. What a bunch off assholes you are. Yes AR me if you think I'm harch, but you who wrote those reples should be AR'ed yourself.
What you basically saying is that non native english speakers with poor spelling and people
who have a varity of reasons why they cant spell are not welcome here, or atleast has to be prepared to be poked in the eye and kicked in the face for their spellingmistakes.
That's good to know...

The alt would be created in order to avoid any baggage from the past.

As soon as an alt started to become a visible maker of weapons, any grief could only be put down to a general badness, and not to the Mrc in particular.

If the Mrc name would be useful in breaking into the market, then why not have a series of disposable alts that develop the weapons in relative peace, and then pass them to the Mrc account for distribution?

As build on my previous post:

If the weapon range has a recognisable physical appearance, then maybe
1. the alts should test the scripting using a nooby-builder set of prims.
2. the actual prims and non-weapon scripts could be built high up in any non-weapons (safer) sandbox
3. the tested weapon scripts and final prims are only brought together by an alt at the end of a development process in which 'the opposition' has had little chance to detect that the alts were Mrc.

And those problems keep a person from holding down the shift key at the start of a sentence exactly how?

It is a matter of respect. If the OP doesn't have enough respect for us or himself to write in a half way legible manner, then why should he get any sympathy? Apparently he can script. His impairments don't keep him from setting up lines of code.

The OP is 18. That is damn old enough to not be coddled.

First, Mrc, welcome; I'm sorry your experience has been hostile (and sorry the thread hasn't been entirely on-point, but it's probably nothing compared to the crap that's coming your way from the weapons "community";).

So, as you've experienced, weapons makers (and would-be weapons "experts";) include some pretty unsavory types. I suspect this is the real reason they need alts; who could stand the pressure of being a complete jerk all the time? So you'll have to decide whether Mrc is gonna be the jerk, or if a fresh alt will play that role for you. Whichever one is "the jerk" will have to be the one who sells or gives away the combat system, because some of the weapons vendors aren't gonna be friendly.

That's not to say that there aren't reasonable scripters--even some darn good ones--who have built weapons and combat systems before. (The ones I'm thinking of are mostly doing other stuff now--not hard to see why--but probably there are others who are still active.)
From: Deira Llanfair
If you are making good content then do some research and market and sell it properly - don't give it away, (unless it's a present for your friends).
The complexity here is that the last thing we need is yet another closed-source combat system: there are a great plenty of these already. But it's a very difficult problem (especially within the constraints of pure in-world LSL) to make an open-source combat system that can only work with "approved" weapons--those that have been tested by some trusted party to be "fair" within the combat RP. And that testing is itself difficult if not impossible--especially if the weapons scripts themselves aren't open source. But then (open source or not) how do you know that the tested script is actually the one that's executing in somebody else's attachment that you can't independently examine?

I've never been remotely interested in weapon scripting, though, so I can't say that I've thought much about this technical problem--perhaps a scripter who has will contribute here--but I suspect this is a provably impossible problem within the constraints of SL. If that's true, then for RP purposes it seems to me that every weapon could just as well be a high-prim channel 20 version of PopGun. And, well... it really just doesn't matter if there are more such weapons or another such combat system. You might want to take on other projects for when you get tired of the weapons game. In the meantime, good luck and try to have fun.

i dont even script at sandboxes, i have a bunch of friends that gladly let me do my little creations at there place.
and the one thing i dont get about it, ya i know that weapons are a big thing but this system im making is simaler to tcs it is gonig to be a freebie one anyone can get, and yes my spelling and stuff is crap that isnt the point. i am not in sl to make a shitload money i have been gladly being one of the nicest peaple that you would find, i havent charge anything for anything i have scripted for peaple, hell, im mainly in this just for the fun of it i just wont to get all this off my back

Well, see, no wonder you make enemies. All the OTHER weapons guys ARE out to make money. People who create stuff and give it away free are hateful to them, because you destroy their business.

Instead of collecting enemies, why not join them? If your stuff is good, SELL it. As Robert Heinlein said once, the warmest praise a creative person can get is a piece of paper that says "Pay To the Order Of...."

That is, of course, assuming that your stuff is original. You say your latest is "similar to tcs". If it's more than "similar" -- that is, if you are using the work of others, and giving it away free, you deserve to die. I'm not saying you're guilty of this, just advising you. Don't rip people off. Especially weapons designers and scripters. They bite.

True, but other days it's all that gets one out of bed. :)

People are big into making money here - if you're making this awesome weapons system to give out free, and it's good, people who make a living selling this stuff are NOT going to be happy with you. And from what folks say, they can be nasty about it.

Lay low for a while, take the suggestion of hanging out as an alt, and find some allies who will offer you protection while you work on their land. And when you are ready to release your system, please please please give careful thought to whether to make it full perms - if you do, I guarantee that other people will be waiting to repackage it and make lots of money off it.

No, Cally. Even people who can barely write a coherent sentence are welcome here. But the inescapable fact is that the forums, and SL itself, are text based mediums. People who can write well are at an advantage...they're perceived as more intelligent than those who write less well. This is true in RL, too, and it goes for speech as well as the written word.

Agreed, some of the replies to Mrc were harsh, even mocking. That's wrong. But it'd also be wrong not to point out that you can get a lot further with good grammar and good spelling.

I know some dyslexic people who move mountains to write well, though it's much harder for them. They know that it's important. A lot of 18 year olds don't yet understand that, and need to be told.

The OP has also shared with us that he is on medication, and that some days it doesn't have the best effects on him. I know how that is and I tend to have sympathy for people who are medicated, even though bad spelling and grammar get on my nerves sometimes too.

Hi Mrc,

Firstly, I'd like to say welcome to the forums. I'd also like to apologise for the reception you've received from some of the posters to this thread.

In dealing with some of the people you meet here and the trouble makers in SL, my advice would be the same.

Just take the high ground and leave them to their own sad little, self important, self aggrandising, ill-informed, ill-educated behaviour.

Don't dignify their behaviour with a response and go about your business as if, at the most, you're dealing with a persistent cloud of gnats.

As far as creating an alt, I'd say don't give them the satisfaction. There is no reason that you should not be able to go about your own business unmolested by idiots.

Use mute, make sure you have a decent protection (you're a weapons designer so I'm guessing you're actually pretty well covered in that area), and let them knock themselves out.

Don't retaliate or respond in any way, don't get embroiled in any pointless arguments, shouting matches and certainly don't use weapons of any kind.

In the end you'll win through.

Hope all goes well.
