I try to go there once or twice a year :) That's what I'd love to recreate, the rebirth from devastation. Though it would be a huge project. Maybe just one corner of the sim could evolve, or maybe, one hike could evolve from devastation to regrowth over the period of a week, or day. RL, it's now in this sort of intermediate growth where you can still see the landscape when you hike, it is not yet the unbroken wall of trees more typical for the area :)

Lexxi, I've never seen either of those places, thanks! I think I'll save them for a special treat when my new PC is up and spewing frames like an eruption of video! *crosses fingers*
.

I'm up there all the time! The hike to Harry's Ridge is like a spiritual journey for me, and who can resist hiking through a region called "The Plains of Abraham"? At any rate, it's amazing to watch Nature rebuild herself over time, especially after such devastation.

It would be a massive project to recreate it, but it would be a lot of fun.I guess the question should be if you had a free island and a lot of time and some actual skill, what would you build? If I had an island, what I would actually build is a lot of lop-sided, poorly textured, prim-heavy crapola.

Only for about 10 seconds. Can you ask your security orb to give me a chance to steal some stuff before it orbits me next time?

Since we’re daydreaming, here’s mine.

My “estate” would require a minimum of seven Sims, arranged east-to-west: one Sim, two Sims, three Sims, one Sim.

The seven would be connected by a river of sorts, a river of time in essence. Flight would be disabled to encourage vehicular travel and sail-powered craft would be readily and freely available.

The first Sim, A Convergence, would essentially be a gathering place, with shops, parks, a place for concerts and, The Academy. The Academy, in a perfect world, would include a copy of Jopsy Pendragon’s Particle Laboratory and The Library of Primitives as well as collections of textures, sounds and scripts. Push would not be enabled nor would building, aside from selected areas. I’m also thinking it would be a no-avs-under-30-days-old area as I believe this the most effective grief-deterrent available, and frankly, I’ve answered the same noob questions one too many times over the years. (“NO, I DON’T know how you can make some money!”)

The Second Sim, Verne’s Wells, would have an electric steampunk theme, an appropriate beginning to such a journey.

The Third Sim, The Marshes, would have a pirate theme, however, based more on the St. Lawrence River and Thousand Islands than the Caribbean. Anyone remember the old Disney series Swampfox and/or Scarecrow?

The Fourth Sim, Yesterday, would be a pre-medieval fantasy. Here there be magic and dragons. Any questions?

The Fifth Sim, Today, would have a contemporary gothic theme. The justicar who frequents the area will admit to Gangrel ties, btw.

The Sixth Sim, Tomorrow, would be a spaceport, more Mos Eisley than Deep Space Nine, but neither really.

The Seventh Sim, The Dreaming, well, the Dreamlord rules here and it’s highly unlikely it would ever be opened up for public use (the one Sim I would keep as a personal realm).

Now, if some development corporation is prepared to compensate me such that I can give up full-time journalism and part-time music, I’d be happy to show them the plans ☺

And, I like your plan for the island. PERFECT.

I've been looking for Scarecrow for decades. Glad to hear it's on DVD. Still remember the theme song. "The soldiers of the king fear his name . . ." or something like that.

I too like all of Snow's sim ideas. So -- can there be a script that changes your boat from a galleon to a riverboat then to a hovercraft as you travel this winding river between the sims? That would be way cool.

I'm almost certain this is possible. I have an avatar that completely changes appearance depending on what he's doing. Hovering/sitting/flying/walking, etc. It automatically changes to a completely different avatar for each one. I would think you could do that for any object. Just base it on location instead of action.

There is an object in world that morphs. I have no idea what it is, but I've seen it. Has many vehicles in it. My I wish I knew what that was called.

My favorite place on earth in the Real World is Mt. St. Helens. I hike from the Johnston Ridge Observatory to the tip of Harry's Ridge as an annual spiritual retreat. Anyone who has been to the Observatory probably understands. I'd love to create a reproduction of Mt. St Helens and that hike. I could have a memorial to those who died in the eruption, a slide show or some sort of streaming video, some interactive displays and some really great places to explore. I would LOVE to do that. Of course, I don't have the free island, so unless someone ponies one up or I hit the lotto, that ain't happenin'.

Never made that hike, but have been to the observatory on several occasions. Always look for the mountain on a clear day whenever I am out and about, as I do Mt. Hood. The views from various places is really spectacular.

I'd build an M.C. Escher castle. Wouldn't it be neat if we could play with the gravity using LSL?

Damnit, I've got one too - and for the life of me I can't think of the name. Latest version has about a dozen different vehicle configurations, ranging from blimp to submarine & everywhere in between. Love it. Still haven't figured out "Jet Fighter" mode, but that's probably me and my sucky flight skills. It's a HUD that rezzes a pod that turns into whatever you want. Very customizable, has combat support... dangit, I'm gonna kick myself when I get in-world and figure it out. And it's FREE.

I would pick a small town in the US that wanted to put a replica in SL and see if we could make that project a go. That might be fun.

You know - I really love this idea. If you pick a small town, then build sort of a Main Street USA style build, I wonder if you would get enough interest in it to get people from the town to take some ownership and pride in it. That could be a really cool thing for a small community! People could meet in SL if they couldn't get out. It would be a familiar place, there could be impromptu town hall meetings or a cantral area where people could discuss issues relevant to the town, and the residents could have something to show off to other Sl residents.

I'd love to see something like this.

Several small towns and cities in Second Life based on real life places. This one here is based on a section of Portland Oregon. Specifically NW 21st Avenue Portland Oregon.

The Scarecrow Song by Gerard Schurmann & Terry Gilkyson

EPISODE 1

Scarecrow! Scarecrow!
The soldiers of the King feared his name. Scarecrow!
On the southern coast of England, there's a legend people tell,
Of days long ago when the great Scarecrow would ride from the jaws of Hell
And laugh (Ahhh! Ha-ha! Ha-ha! Haaa!) with a fiendish yell!
With his clothes all torn and tattered,
Through the black of night he'd ride,
From the marsh to the coast like a demon ghost
He'd show his face then hide (He'd rob the rich then hide)
And he'd laugh (Ahhh! Ha-ha! Ha-ha! Haaa!) till he split his side!
Scarecrow! (Scarecrow!) Scarecrow! (Scarecrow!)
The soldiers of the King feared his name.
Scarecrow! (Scarecrow!) Scarecrow! (Scarecrow!)
The country folk all loved him just the same. Scarecrow!
He would always help the farmer, when there was no gold to bring,
He'd find a way for the poor to pay the taxes of the King
"Scarecrow!" - every man would sing! (With gold from a smuggler's ring!)
So the King told all his soldiers, "Hang him high or hang him low,
But never return till the day I learn He's gone in flames below (He rides in flames below)
Or you'll hang - with the great Scarecrow!"
Scarecrow! (Scarecrow!) Scarecrow! (Scarecrow!)
The soldiers of the King feared his name.
Scarecrow! (Scarecrow!) Scarecrow! (Scarecrow!)
The country folk all loved him just the same.
Scarecrow! Scarecrow! Scarecrow! (Ahhh! Ha-ha! Ha-ha! Ha-ha! Ha-haaa!)

Well, Portland isn't exactly a small town, but I understand that if you had a portion of a big city that had it's own community, that could work. I was sort of thinking of one of those really small country towns with the old Main Street with babrber shops, a saloon, and a General Store. Lots of old buildings with facades; couple of old farts playing checkers in the park. You drive through them all the time when you get out in the sticks. There's something sort of comfortable and homey about them. I guess it would be tough to generate enough interest in SL from a town like that to really get the people behind it, but it would be pretty cool if you could.

All I recall now, unfortunately, is that it is supposed to resemble NW 21st Avenue Portland Oregon and might be found by putting in Portland, or 21st avenue . . or something like that. The pictures, though, are from early December 2007.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

According to this blurb in Willamette Week, http://wweek.com/wwire/?p=9337 , the sim owner Ty Magpie is actually Portland mayor Tom Potter. So, um, yes Stormy, probably your property taxes have some role in this :)

Considering Pacific Northwesterners live in a recreation mecca, and how few they really are, there are WAY too many messing about in SL!

I will have to do a search later when I get online. From that picture, it does resemble 21st Ave.......minus a few things and missing a few things, naturally. :D
