From: Imnotgoing Sideways I kinda like the typing animation.. It's cute. (^_^) But.. I have a friend that keeps it on, but persistently types /0 before every chat line. (o.o) It's kinda odd when she starts IMing you... It's like the number is a reflex. (>_< Then again.... >>----> (^_^)y I've done that. Or at least most times I catch myself before I type the 0 in IM. Sometimes I cannot catch myself in time, though.

I don't like using the typing animation. It looks kinda ridiculous just standing there typing on an imaginary keyboard. Your arms extended out with your hands and fingers moving around like you're scratching the air.
Thankfully you can buy AO's that don't show the typing animation when you talk.

From: DaQbet Kish I’m sure there was exhaustive research, double blind studies…group trials, alpha’s, beta’s and countless memos on the subject at Linden Lab. It is a lab? Right? Yes, and they all agree that there should be NO SOUR CREAM in guacamole!

someone should put up a poll on this just for fun. ]For me I can't stand the typing animation for myself or when others use it. It looks so dumb and ugly

From: Damien1 Thorne If I am having a conversation with one person, I look at them. Usually the head bobs slightly when they are typing. The head-bobbing doesn't happen until after they've hit RETURN. Lots of folks hate the head-bobbing too, esp when they're saying "No, dammit! NO!"

My goodnes. There shouldn't be any sour cream *in* the quacamole! It should be served on the side, so we can scoop up just the right spoonful of both, while retaining the contrast between the flavors.
Come on people, wake up and smell the quacamole!
I like the practical benefits of the typing anim, and I like the fact that I can turn it off. I'm annoyed by low-quality toys (e.g., poseballs) where the maker didn't know enough to override it when appropriate by using higher priority animations. (Too bad that we can't change the priority later! The builder using the anim should set it, not the animator.)
No doubt there is a better way, as Bran suggests. But ... any really good ideas?

I dislike the typing animation just as much as sour cream, guacamole, and beans in my chili. And I'd never waste good popcorn by throwing it at someone.

From: Brann Georgia The standard typing animation is simply absurd, with people flapping their hands in the air. While it makes more sense to use an animation that includes a keyboard or something like that, I find them clunky.
When in IM chat, you see a message that says "Brann Georgia is typing". That's clear enough.
So why not have a discreet floating text or something above an AV's head that just says "typing" in small text, and which can be turned off for RP purposes? Better than that spazzy arm flapping, IMHO. I wear an avatar scanner that does this. I can see up to 16 avatars listed and if any of them are typing, a (typing) appears next to the name. The only downside is the scanner won't work in places that don't allow scripts. Still doesn't bother me. I give people about 30 seconds to respond before I figure they're afk or something.

By the way: Typing doesn't mean anyone is "alive" over there. As in, there have been many times when someone looks like they are typing the next great American novel. And then disappear. There are also times when they are not typing anything at all, but their avatar is stuck in a typing animation.
TYPING DOESN'T GURANTEE THAT ANYONE IS ACTUALLY SAYING ANYTHING
My caps lock got stuck. Sorry. Does not mean I was shouting. Just that I am too lazy to switch to lower case.

Ann found us a darling typing override -- a pair of rabbit hand puppets that appear to be talking to each other when you type. Absolutely hilarious. http://slurl.com/secondlife/HappyMood/77/133/31

I like sour cream in chili, a dab will do me. I also like having my typing animation turned off.
Maybe this should be a poll.

From: Lexxi Gynoid As in, there have been many times when someone looks like they are typing the next great American novel. And then disappear. Hence why typing is useful . If you see someone stuck in the typing animation it's a good guess that they crashed, if they're simply standing there doing nothing you don't know anything. And if there's something you really don't want to the typing anim to show for there's always simply prefixing /0 before your chat.

Try a laptop or other enhancer
09-30-2008 05:57
I use the AMD notebook I picked up free from their Pavilion. It appears when I type Gives a nice visual
The SLaptop works great too
There is an outstanding Typing Enhancer in the free items part of SLexchange that's just awesome
I've seen avatars writing on notepads and a cool feather pen/scroll
plenty of animation devices if you look around.
Better than just standing there twitching your head

I seem to know a lot of people that type "hi" by spending ten minutes in the typing animation. Are they there, typing? Crashing? What is going on? So the typing animation, here, isn't a good guess. Also I've been stuck in the typing animation when I wasn't typing, or crashing. Just have that typing animation running like mad, even though I didn't start it. So I do not use that animation as an indicator of anything. Not any more I don't.
