It really irks me when people do not have the typing animation.
There you are standing there talking, and you never know they are saying anything until the words just appear, so it is all about an uncomfortable moment of silence while you wonder if they are crashing, AFKing, or just plain not paying attention. Sometimes you can tell by the subtle side to side movement the head makes but some animations have such a high priority that they freeze the head as well. If the mouth actually moved while typing that would be cool, but basically people look like unmoving statues with the typing animation disabled. But I am old fashioned i guess. Some of my standing animations stop the typing ani but now I think i may get a typing overrider to override the animations that stop the typing ani. _____________________

Ctrl-Alt-D. Brings up the Client Menu. Ctrl-Alt-S brings up the Debug window
Use the dropdown to find playtypinganim and set it to FALSE. _____________________

There you are standing there talking, and you never know they are saying anything until the words just appear, so it is all about an uncomfortable moment of silence while you wonder if they are crashing, AFKing, or just plain not paying attention. Yes, it's one of my peeves too. I'm glad I'm not alone in this - I find it pretty uncomfortable trying to hold a conversation with someone with no typing anim. You just lose the rhythm of the dialogue, especially when they type quite a lot at a time. Unfortunately, at the moment, it seems like SL is defeating typing animations pretty much by itself, including my own, low-priority AO stands. It can be working fine, then suddenly stops ... or carries on when you've stopped, which is even more annoying. Ditto for typing sounds, although they don't seem to persist. I suspect that this may be connected with the fact that scripts can't detect when an avatar's typing either any more. I've not looked for a Jira on this, but if you look at your MystiTool or similar radar HUD next time someone nearby's typing, it doesn't show up as a "T". My own, home-rolled HUD has the same problem, so I can't blame the scripters; to be technical, AGENT_TYPING isn't being set by llGetAgentInfo(). |

There's always typing overrides. There's some VERY cheap ones at Grendel's.

...to be technical, AGENT_TYPING isn't being set by llGetAgentInfo(). I guess this is just one of those magical animations. Another one is the ability to set your avatar "Away" just by playing the "away" animation. |

It doesn't bother me if someone doesn't have the typing animation playing when they're "talking". I have mine disabled because I always thought it looked odd. I used to have dreams where I'd be standing at work or something and everyone would be "typing" as they talked. It was crazy.
I was also never fond of the typing sound either. |

I tried "not typing" for a while... short while.
I had a few "are you still there Metal?" and "he's crashed" type comments. Then I went back to typing. |

I'm old fashioned enough, that I still think that Magic Keyboards are a pretty neat idea.
Whether they're holographic keyboards that appear in front of you, 1900's era super-detailed typewriters, or even someone tapping away at a wrist computer, making notations in an old-style journal, or tapping merrily at a graphing calculator. In my shop, I've got a cool little "Super Keyboard" which helps people communicate (cheat) through Restrained Life restrictions, and allowed (until 1.20) people to communicate face-to-face through mutes. (the next version will provide a workaround for the "no attachments" design change). And 2 years ago, I started work on another Typing AO item.. which I never quite finished. But I'm working on it again, to see if I can finish it. I still think they're cool. Especially in a world with Voice, where it's so easy to ignore people who are typing in chat.. why would you want to disable the "hey, pay attention, someone is typing" sound? _____________________

Having your typing anim turned off is the prefered way to Rp I have found. Some sims wont even allow you to type, demanding you switch.
When I first switched it was wierd but I wouldnt have the old way back for a second. It looks noob and its just kinda stupid really. If you've done any BDSM rp and your sub is all tied up, the last thing you want is for them to break form to "type" a reply. |

Well, that made my morning. Thanks for passing that along. ![]() And I do not type when I talk. If someone ever makes a good animation for it, I will change. I have tried and failed to do it myself, and have never seen one that I like. _____________________

Chat bubbles on and you can see when someone is talking to you, even when their typing animation is off. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rliqNvybcR4

They managed it with voice. _____________________

I have two cues for people chatting and one of them is the animation. The other is the typing sound. If I don't hear either for 5 minutes (or see more text), then I am likely to either move on or go AFK myself.
Why five minutes? That's as long as my usual attention span is.. ooh, a shiny! _____________________

have to agree typing anim breaks my immersion too, but I guess its what your used to.. I think SL is the only game I have ever seen where you "pretend" to type.
Also to me at least the "debug" option is broken in the latest viewer.. when I try it I get instantly crashed to desktop. |

The standard typing animation is simply absurd, with people flapping their hands in the air. While it makes more sense to use an animation that includes a keyboard or something like that, I find them clunky.
When in IM chat, you see a message that says "Brann Georgia is typing". That's clear enough. So why not have a discreet floating text or something above an AV's head that just says "typing" in small text, and which can be turned off for RP purposes? Better than that spazzy arm flapping, IMHO. _____________________
