I've logged into Open Life a few times generally only to freeze up and crash. The one time i was able to move, within 5 minuties I stumbled accross 2 copies of my builds from SL that had been distributed there with full perms! I reported it to the administration about 3 weeks ago with no reply. So open life can go f*** itself as far as I am concerned. It's just a lawless version of SL where my IP rights mean even less than they do in SL.

I think OLG is great. Same with OSG Both have great potential. I in fact was able to successfuly create a nice avatar and clothing On Open Life grid. And other great items. The system however is still Beta. (Recently bumped up from Alpha stage) A lot of things still dont work. But i am patiently waiting for it to really get rolling good with stable releases that are fully functional (aside from minor bugs and quirks)

It will be great to see a global economy between the grids in the metaverse. But i still dont think it is ready. But they have made great progress in the last year. I see a lot happening within the next year :)

Maybe it's just me, but isn't posting to the SL Official Forum asking folk to migrate to a competitor service rather poor form?

Nope it is not you, it was the first thing I was thinking as well. And it would not surprise me if disciplinary measures will be taken against people like the OP. There are many initiatives like this is the OS discussion thread as well. People seem to forget this is a Linden Labs forum.

About Openlife. Probably within a few years they do just fine. But at this moment, as a content creator I am not the least inclined to take a look over there. And as long as there is no monetary system, where we can buy AND sell currency, not many creators will. Why would I pay for land each month, if I cannot at least earn back what I pay with my creations? And how well are they protected by a good permissions system?

LL made the source code open source to make Openlife possible, and there is
some stuff I have heard about connecting the two some how but
not sure if that is true.
I don't know OL has it issues and you're aren't going to be do whatever
you want on their mainland because they allow under 18.
That isn't issue for me personally but it might be for some of you.
Personally I just wish I could code my own The Sims like version of SL but with ability to customize whatever I want offline, not attach to any server, not obligated to
pay any additional fees personally and just create for sake of
creating but I doubt that is going to happen.
Yes money is nice, we all need to pay for the computers, software,
the electrical power we use to create and food, roof over our heads
to fuel to do it.
I will continue to create regardless if I am paid or not but I can't
guarantee I am going to be cheerful Elf all time when I am being
nickle and dime, struggling to pay SL and probably coming soon OL
upload fees too so people might get my stuff for free.
It makes me grumpy. OL isn't going to be low cost and affordable
version of SL forever eventually the cost will have to go up to pay
for things to keep the grid running.

OL has alot of problems but what do you expect when it`s still being developed :)

i know that i was in sl for fun but costs are rising trough the roof now, in OL i can have 45k prims for half the price linden charge for 3750, i just like to build and not in it for the money so even as it`s under developed right now, i`m having more fun then logging in to SL

you can`t say "it sucks" about 1 grid or the other as it all comes down to a personal prefference about what you want to do
yes for a business to pay for it`s land is going to take abit more time, if you just want some land to build on for fun with a community and take the occasional crashes along for the price, it`s great :)

all i can say is the people are great and same as other grids, it has potential when it matures as i think alot of people are fed up with LL to keep their business in SL but have their home in a better enviorment(sp) along with a shop there

posting all the info about other grids on LL`s forums might have some consiquences but any active moderation with the current **** storm would be like throwing gas on a fire
but tbh, we have Rock`s almost weekly OSG update wich was left in peace :)

all i can say is that i`ve been fedup with LL for the past year and finally options for fun appear along with SI to export/import objects in multiple worlds

Anything other than a locking of the thread would be inappropriate in my opinion. Otherwise everyone who mentions ANY cpmpetitor to SL, be it WoW, Everquest, There, or Real Life even would have to be treated the same.

Hmm

Just logged into it - its a basic version of er Second Life using opensim.

That doesn't mean I won't put my stuff in there but it just seems like re-inventing the wheel.

However it could create competition for SL which is a good thing for us poor consumers.

At least someone thinks highly enough of it to steal it.

I join openlife, please creators come along and make some creations. There doesnt seem to be anything to buy there, you will make a killing and I need to purchase hair and clothings.

No permission system, no making things there. Simple. I give away a few items, but not into the Opensource free-everything movement, and won't even consider Opensim until there is a working permissions system and secure currency.

This relates to what I've been wondering about - why do people trust openlife more than they trust SL?

Is there some reason for people to think that they're not just getting in on the ground floor of all the same stuff happening all over again?

That way they can become marginalized and dispossed in 3 or 4 years.

One user agreed.

I can understand wanting an altetrnate, no question -- but ya, how is this better, other than "it's not Linden Lab?" For better or worse, at least I know what to expect from LL, and have a *certain* level of trust in their abilities.

I'm an ordinary user of SL I just wonder if most of you running businesses etc. in SL.
I would just add a word of caution before you all go running away from SL to OLG. It is the likes of me and the majority of SL users that pay you L$ it will be years before OLG has the numbers of us that SL has. Remember it's taken SL years to build up to what is in SL now, OLG is just beginning nothing much there for such as us ordinary users.
Lots of people in SL for adult things, SL is 18+, OLG is 15+ !
OLG fell down this weekend with just the influx of of a few extra people, no logging in or with great difficulty, after 10mins in the system froze each time. Hate to think if all 60,000 of us signed up.

I joined, didn't seem to crash but there is little to do there.

If I could, I would create stuff for free in OL, just to help get things on the way.

The more there is to do, the more people will go there and eventually you may just make a "killing"

yeah and what SL has done to us isn't??? The only "poor form" as been that of the greedy Lindens.

There is an opportunity for creative types to make not only some money (eventually) but to make a difference.
