Or better yet, make a texture that says "BAN" in big red letters and tile the neighbor's side with it.

Imma go make that texture.

Hehe :D Tell me when you make it. If I decide to be evil I'll use it.

Or just add the neighbor himself to YOUR ban list. That way he'll see the same ugly lines that you do, but it won't affect your guests at all.

Annabelle - like I said to Conan, take all the time you need. Weekends are pathetic for me getting inworld. Might not be able to pick it up at all until Monday anyway (sometimes I can sneak in for short periods, so we'll see). But thanks a bunch! I can't wait to see what THAT looks like (but hope I don't have to actually wind up using it!).

i laffed. i once again reminded them of the ugly view they gave me with the ban lines.

they said "but we don't want you looking into our land".... but they want me to give up my privacy so they can see into mine?

LOLOLOL hypocrites!

You should so cam inside their house, take snapshots, and put them on their side of your wall. *giggle*

yes, but the texture would be visible all the way across their parcel, not just within a few meters.

Oryx, but won't that also affect my other neighbors? I don't want to inflict this on anyone else. Or are ban lines only seen by those on the ban list? Which makes me wonder why he did this then? I have a Mystitool on all the time, and I've never seen his name pop up in the area when I've been home (or anyone actually, the area is pretty dead most of the time). Let alone, I don't fly around haphazardly for no reason. All I've been doing is setting up my house the last few days, doing some landscaping, etc.

Unless he's just a paranoid prick or as someone else mentioned, does not realize he turned it on.

No no no. Make a texture that says "BAN <NEIGHBOUR'S NAME>" in big red letters, and tile the neighbour's side with it. :p

No, not if you just put him on your ban list. You can ban everyone except for group members or ban everyone not on an access list. Both of these make everyone not allowed see the ban lines. Or you can ban people one at a time, that way only they get to see the lines.

Ooh. Evil :) I approve!

I would add, make sure the pictures are from inside their house looking towards the wall. That way they can just see their parcel mirrored right back at them :p

Thanks Chris. Well, I guess for now, if he does not answer me, I'll just turn on my ban lines then to him and see how he enjoys it.

(Of course, he isn't living there as far as I can tell, there is NO house, in or on the water or sky).

To do it to him, you go to about land, then find the ban tab. Click add, and you will get a search box. Put his name in the search box and then add him to the list. Pretty simple and only he has to see the lines. :)

If the land is associated with a group, I do try to add all group members I can find. Make it hard on all of them.

Ideally, I'd like him to take the ban lines down, not have to create a false background. I didn't pay nearly $10,000L per lot (3 of them) to have fake water and sky (Ok, I know it's all fake in the grand scheme of things, but in SL it's all real to all of us). I specifically bought this land, because of the natural beauty it had. That, would be the ultimate last resort if all else fails.

Besides at the moment, since his ban lines are already in place and quite visible. As Joey in "Friends" said; "It's a Moo point" (it doesn't matter to the cow).

But Elora, you forget that this is mainland. If you want those guarantees, you would have been better off renting on a well-managed island.

I think you need to get your expectations in line.

Yes, it's not cool that he has ban lines, but if he restricts to his group, it is just something you have to live with. Now, you are doing the right thing to try to negotiate with him, but ultimately it is HIS land, just as your land is yours, and he has the right to do what he wants with it, just as you have the same right.

Ultimately, if he doesn't take it down, you just have to build away from the ban lines or put up a screen so that you don't see it through your windows, and move on.

Absolutely right and I understand that. Which is why, I am trying to get in touch with him first. And, I understand that I can try and move my home up as much as possible to see if this helps, before resorting to other measures - but i don't have much margin of error there.

All this info has been useful and enlightening for me however. I'm still not upset that I bought where I did.

/me loves my new home, and I'm good at making the best of an annoying situation.

Ban lines are annoying, no doubt about it. Especially in those cases where, as far as you can determine, they are never on that property anyway!

Every time I've had to live next to someone with ban lines (as I do right now, on one of my properties, yet I've never seen the neighbor in question), it just makes me gradually dislike that person more and more.

I know that's not fair, and I might actually like the person quite a lot, if I knew him or her. But I dislike the person anyway, for thinking their their plot is so all-fired important that I have to bump into their ban lines all the time, not to mention look at them constantly.

Agreed. I can understand people wanting Guest Access enabled if they're on their land and need privacy (it can be a nuisance just trying to talk if you're in a high traffic area), but it just seems very anti-social to leave it enabled 24/7 if you rarely visit your parcel.

I always deed any land I own to a group, and I could be wrong, but a subtle hint I put in the charter a year ago seems to keep neighbouring ban lines away.

"If you find Guest Access enabled on any of my parcels and I'm not there, *please* IM me and I'll disable it ASAP. I hate ban lines as much as the next guy."

Anybody checking parcel ownership will click through to that text.

There's a really simple reason why its so common that folks erect banlines on their newly aquired property:

SL has been marketed to a lot of folks as "A place you can OWN virtual land".

Ownership implies control, and to new folks unfamiliar with the social customs of our world, turning on an 'Access List' probably seems no less natural than locking the doors on the brand new car they just bought.

What would probably help some, is if Linden changed the dialog boxes around setting up access lists - so that a new user setting it up for the first time receives a reminder about how its sometimes considered un-neighborly in Second Life to erect access lists - or something to that effect.

Of course, this would be social engineering. And when Linden has attempted social engineering in the past its gone... oh, so well :D

Elora, lest you be driven paranoid by the thought of being banned, realize that there may actually be no-one at all on his "Ban" list (check "about land" on his side of the line). He may simply have put his own group on his "Access" list, which automatically bans every one not in his group.

Why has no one suggested hanging holiday decorations all over the ban lines? This would seem a perfect solution, given the discussion recently about the pole decorations at the Forum hangout - one set of lines for every holiday: Chanukah/Xmas/Kwanzaa/Festivus/whateverelse. Make them all out of poofers, the display will be visible at night from the moon, and probably generate enough tourist income to more than cover the tier. Enough to make any neighbor reconsider, at least out of jealousy. Really people, absolutely obvious...

Cee, as it turns out you probably are right. I got a message back from him finally. He said he was not aware of any of this, that his partner was the "builder" on the property and he'd ask him why the ban lines were up, and get back to me. Maybe, the guy just automatically put them there for some reason? Who knows. He mentioned about us getting together like I suggested to meet so hopefully, all will end well in this scenario
