I think you are wasting your time here. SL contains, mostly, the following types of people :
- Socialisers, who just want to chat; mostly mindless, self-important blither.
- Fashionistas, who want to play 3D Barbie, and then have pixel sex with a 3D animated Ken (or vice versa)
- Perverts
- Capitalists
<snip>
"These are not the droids you are looking for. Move on." You forgot Perveted Capitalists - If it weren't for such, none of us would be here right now.

From: Ephraim Kappler Well, no it isn't. The OP is seeking to experiment with something quite antithetical to what Desmond does. However clumsily he or she may have dealt with subsequent posts there is no reason why they should have to prove themselves against the benchmark you are setting... You misunderstand me again. My benchmark is not financial success. My benchmark is proven competence. Show me your ideas WORK. Otherwise, you are an intellectual gasbag. The OP's comments like calling resource extraction "illegal" and Desmond's arguments (made from a position of proven competence) an "interesting little twist" indicate to me that the OP has a long way to go.

Fair point. I'm ashamed to say I missed that. The only issue I would still have is that the OP still has to get going with their ideas in SL and I am all for seeing them do that. It's very easy to go awry in the context of these forums and I wouldn't want the OP to compound their mistake of posting prematurely by allowing the tenor of response to put them off.

i saw the movie and really what separates it from any other propaganda movie that leads to a one world order??
is the movement different than the movie or something??
there is a difference in telling someone it is more cost efficient to go off grid than to tell them to go off grid because big brother can see you..
my house is pretty close to off grid only because the local electric company is like the mafia loan sharks..
our ranch is heading in the same direction..we have gassifyers coming soon and those generators that burn just about anything for power..
my father worked in heating and air conditioning for many years..while everyone was selling furnaces telling people their heat exchangers were cracked and they could be killed by harmful gasses..he was leading in sales and had much more satisfied customers selling on how much more efficient a newer unit would be..it's pretty relative in about everything and works much better than fear..
i live in the heart of the bible belt..there are not many of these movies i haven't seen.i have them given to me on dvds and vcr tapes .cassetes papers..news papaers ect.. they all end with the same meaning..one world order or the second coming or both..
is the movement different than the movie?i'm just curious because if it is i'm all about improving mine..but if it's just another big brother group..i have tons of those around me in rl already i'm trying to shut off
either way there is room for everyone in second life because all types of people use second life..
the ones saying people that use second life only live online..they don't have a clue who is using second life.

With the US Federal Trade Commission about to release a report to Congress on Virtual Worlds, explicit content and minors (as opposed to miners), SL is going to be the last place for any sort of radical social movement. There will be 436 duly elected idiots sniffing around inworld, with no clue to what they are seeing or doing.

From: Lindal Kidd 3) Learn more about SL (and about real world economics) before trying to change them. It gives your arguments much more weight. 4) Improve your presentation skills. If it's in a shiny package with ribbons, more people will be inclined to take it.
THIS! To be in SL or start a "movement" or just posting on the forums, one needs to have a VERY thick skin. Some of us like to bust yer chops over stuff Go learn how things work in SL and THEN try the movement stuff. You gotta walk before you can run (or build, or script, etc)

Yeah, seriously, people are generally much nicer 'face to face' on the grid; though forums may be a bit more honest in terms of what people will think, but often won't say. Even if none of us are on the same wavelength as the fellow, it doesn't mean his views are invalid. Think: Copernicus or Galileo or something. That said, extraordinary ideas require extraordinary confirmation. There's really nothing too special about me, either... yes I'm rather involved on the grid, but likely every single one of us is very involved with something, somewhere, comparably. Ultimately, odds are, there's a very good chance of personal failure on my part ~ especially considering the rate of grid disasters around here, both force majeure and self inflicted. Everyone's a genius until they fail.

Caledon is a pretty special corner of the grid and I'm sure you are justly proud of your achievement. It's always a pleasure to visit and the university is an especially handy recommendation when I occasionally get pole-axed with questions from a freshly rezzed newbie. The only pity is that Caledon is more of an exception rather than the rule in SL. I can't help but wonder if the OP might just be successful in the same fashion that you have managed quite a feat where many others have fallen flat.

I feel undeserving of being placed on some pedestal. So I understand what you are saying...even while I'm attaching the crane and hoisting you up there. I know you're just a regular guy, Des. Honest. Doesn't keep me from a mild case of hero worship, though.

It's very disheartening to me to see someone come in here and present their idea in an informative way, and in a polite and non-threatening way, with initial healthy discussion.....only to have their bubble burst by some people coming in with rude comments and a slew of off topic play time.
The presentation the OP gave....regardless of whether or not you agree with the concept....is EXACTLY what SL proposes to be a venue for....and exactly what SL community would benefit from....a sharing of ideas from all over the world. NOT just the ideas you approve of.
For those with lack of respect and empathy.....This is not your personal play toy....this is a venue for discussion and presentation of ideas. If you don't like them - don't read them and don't respond.....certainly apply the concept "do no harm".....How does it make you feel to have just burst someone's bubble? Is that what you use the forum for? Will SL prosper as a community if you do that to every new person who comes into forum and presents their ideas?
Noncomformist.....again.....whatever you experienced above that made you think about giving up your ideas and mission to inform and educate within SL.....is NOT representative of what you will experience by immersing yourself into the inworld SL community. Please do that....and don't give up. You will be pleasantly surprised inworld, as opposed to what you experienced here, in this forum.

Hi OP, if you want to affect change through SL, it is my belief that you have to have a primary interest in finding out about SL itself before trying to use it as a medium for your political views. Experienced and intelligent SL residents will respect you more for it. If you don't know how to TP around, send notecards, etc., all your knowledge is for naught in SL because you'll come off as a noob who is just in SL to further a cause and not actually be a PART of SL, and your valuable thoughts will get nowhere. So if you want to do this, first put aside your views and just explore and learn about SL for what it is for a good three months at least. Otherwise, you're just going to get a big headache and be tempted to say "SL is useless for my cause" which is really saying "I'm not interested enough in SL to use it to further my cause so I'll blame SL for being what it is and SL residents for being what they are, instead of blaming myself for not investing enough time and energy into the platform itself to actually get to know people and places before I start prosletyzing (err informing) about my own agenda." good luck with your movement. I just think that most people who come to SL as new residents thinking "I'm going to do THIS in SL!" would be better rewarded if they did not first try to frame their SL experience with their own motives. Just my opinion

re: post 121
This is probably the best advice so far. It's no different than the people who post "I'm new and want to make a million dollars in SL" or "I want to know how to make awesome clothes in 5 minutes". No matter what your interests are, you should get in and learn about the platform a bit before making grandiose plans. And you can't do that here.
