That appears to be a Verticle TakeOff and Landing vehicle, and wouldn't need brakes, but that doesn't mean that it's not extremely bizarre. The lack of landing gear to support the plane while the engines are off is disturbing. Even more disturbing is how far back on the vehicle the engines have been placed. To lift off the ground, they would normally have to be near the center of mass. There must be some strange forces at work here. This is beyond what our current understanding of physics can explain.

(now all that tuition for an aerospace engineering degree is starting to pay off)

Have we checked the wreck for Galvanic residue? Likely that such a valuable metal has been pilfered by now, but there should be some traces left in the body work. Can we employ the redoubtable Ms Malaprop to the case?

Message in a bottle
04-10-2008 03:44
From: Psyra Extraordinaire
Magellan... hmmm.... we've had a few messages in bottles wash up on the Avarian shores signed by a 'Magellan'.

Most of them were just asking for whoever found the bottle to please recycle it for them, though.

Can we look at currents to look at a likely source for these messages?

Further leads on the Moth Temple hint ball...
04-10-2008 06:25
This was posted on my blog by Blessed Sinister
(http://headburroantfarm.wordpress.com/2008/04/07/the-search-for-magellan-linden-starts-now/#comments)

"Been looking into this strange disappearance as well (following some of the leads that have been found so far).
What I have found is that there is another “Hint” ball by the Isabel Infohub. This one is Red, and hidden under the road at the T intersection. It gives another picture covered in green (like the one on Magellan’s blog).

After following that through an exhausting maze of links, hints and dead-ends, I found the following two new-fangled web pages (even have those new *colour* images…). (I can’t remember what linked there as I had a screenfull of tabs open, opps).

http://pantherweb.org/sl/re2/
http://media.kadath.org/images/farview.jpg

(I have no idea how recent, or not, they are. Hopefully they will help in the search)"

Cheers Blessed :)

I still don't see any connection between J.S. Tomorrow's Involvium and Magellan Linden, ther is no proof one of her sketches of the crew is actually Magellan Linden. I'm affraid this will be dead end... or am I just missing something?
Those green covered pictures seems to be more interesting, has anybody manage to puzzle them out? (Well, since they are three years old, I hope somebody succeeded) How many of them actually exist? Mr. Antfarm, have you tried for example to merge them together? Maybe it's one picture and the green areas are just on different places?

Involvium & Green Maps
04-10-2008 08:25
Hi Natacha! A very long time, no see!

I tend to agree on the Involvium matter - there seems to be no connections bar the one's they have written themselves... excepting, of course, that there whole team seems to have vanished as well...

As for the maps, I doubt I'm best placed to analyse them, but maybe Salazar could ask Marcos to look into them?

Field notes: Marianne McCann, Age 5 1/2 (excerpts)

"...Well, I hadda go t' school today, an it was class elections too, so I hadda hadda be there. So I did't get a chance to 'splore much..."

"...I did get a chance to stop off and look for more information about the mystery balls. It looks like it was once part of stuff f'r a scavenger hunt from long, long ago dat Ben Linden did. Here's what I found on it.

From: http://secondlife.wikia.com/wiki/Magellan_Linden
The last entry on the blog was part of a April 1st scavenger hunt set up by Ben Linden to show off screenshots of a "Renderer 2.0" that was in development, the hunt had many clues spanning across different locations and SL related websites, one clue was at the Heterocera temple and had a URL which led to Magellan's blog.

I still tink I'd like to look for the clue ball in Isobell, though. Maybe there is someting there. An "Ben Linden" keeps comin up all the time. I kinda wonder if he knows sometin about what happened, but I'm not even sure if he's around at all no more, neither. I sure hope nobody ended up rendering Magellan, though. Dat sounds awful painful..."

"...There was also a piccie or two, showing -- I tink -- Magellan, Dr. Milo Gessner, Carla Jane Falcone, Dr. Randall Boas and Capt. Adrien deLane. Magellan names 'em a couple times in the blog, an dat page I found mentions them too.

Where did all these people end up, I wonder..."

I think that, without landing gear, it's more of a VTOC vehicle - Verticle Take-Off and Crash. vehicle

It is 12:00 AM, 1/4/05 (by my clock)

8 screen shots showing the progress of the new rendering engine are hidden in and around the world of Second Life.

You have until 12:00 AM, 2/4/05 hours to find them, **piece them together**, and post them in these forums before they are removed.

I will re-post any that are found in this thread to make it easy to view them.

Clues will be dropped throughout the day.

Looking at the rough map from Magellans blog...

...and comparing it with images from the satalite mapping system (slurl), it seems like the lowest X on the map is ANWR and the one above it is the crash site of the Malamute.

http://slurl.com/secondlife/ANWR//// <- oil rig at ANWR
http://slurl.com/secondlife/Columbia//// <- crash site

Using those two points as keys, maybe the other X's on the map could be explored for clues?

Even though somebody in the crew _must_ have seen the oil rig at ANWR, I don't think it's mentioed in the blog.. Curious.

Maybe the prim (it doesn't pump oil, but pure-grade plywood) rig was a LIER project, an not considered worthy of note? Still seems fishy, given the pipeline goes to Hetereocera, into the griefer containment pool on the atoll.

Anyone know where them "X"s would be today?

You're probably be right. As I look at the map again, and as I actually think about it, they probably came into the area from the south - you can see the dotted line start at the bottom of the map and make it's way north, through ANWR, to the atoll.

Sadly, I'm still at work for another 5 hours and you can't get sim names out of slurl.

If you zoom slurl all the way in on Columbia, the crash site, then zoom back out two notches, you can sorta see how the terrain today matches up with with his map. The X to the west of Columbia looks like 1-2 sims north and 5 sims to the west. Just to the east of that and a little north, there's a river that leads north to a large lake - this appears on Magellans map as sortofa black blob.

Can't really see from the satallite footage where the X in the center of the map is but it should be at the highest point in that area - top of a mountain maybe. The X to the NNE of the center X seems to be about 5 sims due north of Columbia. The last one isn't clear - probably have to get in-world to see..

When I saw him at Nova Albion's 2nd Anniversary in 2006, he arrived already plastered. He ended up passed out (while standing) in the Infohub near the canal in Sistiana. Bino Arbuckle and I could not wake him and we ended up pushing him into the drink. Good thing he was in his suit.

My mind is decidedly less-than-brilliant. Case in point, my recollection of this event was not very accurate. While searching through some of Bino's Snapzilla photos from Nova Albion's 2nd Anniversary I came upon these...

http://www.sluniverse.com/pics/pic.aspx?id=59697
http://www.sluniverse.com/pics/pic.aspx?id=59698
http://www.sluniverse.com/pics/pic.aspx?id=59699
http://www.sluniverse.com/pics/pic.aspx?id=59700

I was there and took some photos of my own. But I was just a witness to the dunking. Not a dunker. Someone should talk to Kyrah Abattoir and see if she remembers anything from that day.

We are near another important Nova Albion date too - isn't Bay City due real soon?

Wouldn't surprise me if someone fished Magellan out of a catacomb somewhere...

I've been poking around... will poke some more :)

I should think that the Grid borders with the new Bay City section should be opening very soon now.

I just popped in briefly to check on these.... as far as I can tell, the X in the center of the map is in the general area of Oslar 35,15. The land has obviously been changed quite a bit since the map was drawn; there really aren't any high points there now, and it's very developed with shops and such. There's a Linden road which passes very close to those coordinates, but the rest of the area is so crowded with buildings, I can't tell what else the X may have been marking.

The X to the NNE of that seems to me to be around Didugua 252,19. There's a Linden crossroads there, one arm of which leads to a wooden walkway that crosses the water and eventually connects to another road in Telea.

The last X looked to me to be somewhere around Modest 240,102, although it's hard to tell for sure, since the coastline in that area of the map doesn't continue beyond there. There's another Linden road near there, so perhaps that's what the X is marking?

I couldn't tell what else the X's may have been marking, besides the roads; I'm assuming the map was tracing the route they took around the continent, using these newly-discovered roads. I don't know if these coordinates are helpful, but there they are. :)

Magellan and I were very close at one time, but I haven't heard anything from him in a long time. It makes me weep to think he may be in trouble.

I know this may be painful, but whatever you can remember from his past may prove very helpful. Does anything stick out or did he ever mention something that might shed some light on his current whereabouts?

Didugua usedta be my old stompin grounds before I grew down. Beautiful areas around there, then. I wanna say that somewhere near the border between Didugua and Imperial used to be some sort of shrine or totem, on protected land along the road. I could be wrong. It was a long time ago.

I went back there and found a statue of 'Herm, the ancient god of the travelers' near that same crossroads, right by the sim border. It isn't on protected land, but it's very close to it. The face reminds me a bit of Salazar. :D

Dat's t'one!

So it's not protected land -- it's privately owned? Well, dat's another red fishie, I guess.

This is very distressing... I hope his disappearance from Search only indicates that he's lost somewhere else in the space/time continuum, not something more sinister. The sighting in the underground lab is a curious thing... so many possible explanations! If only we knew where he'd been seen in world last, perhaps it might give some clue.

Speaking of the space/time continuum, Jeff Linden purported to be from the future and that he had traveled back through time to help us. I was hoping he might be of assistance, especially since he had befriended my great grandma, Cessadia Thetan, when she first returned to this world. I went to look him up on the People Search and found him missing as well. I wonder if he has returned to the future? Does anyone know when he was last here? It figures he'd be AWOL too, just when we need him most.

Jeff still shows up on that oft-referenced "Linden Roles" wiki page as active/current. Another indicator that particular information is possibly inaccurate and out-of-date.

Good lord, I wonder if any of these disappearances are related to the grid problems and instabilities we've been experiencing?! It's starting to make me think of the story of people disappearing just before the Great Erase.

I would hope not, but I can't deny the possibility. Everyone, I think, has experienced prim drift, inventory loss and parts or all of a build disappearing. It's not that much of a stretch for folks to have gone missing too. It happened before the Erase when the whole village of Alfendale disappeared. But that was before the Lindens' Grid.

When Grid borders get so weak that they lose cohesion, it's possible for a breach to occur and expose the world to the chaotic forces outside the barrier. This is most dangerous when it occurs along a region that borders the outer void, with no defined region in between to act as a buffer. Grandma Thetan created a grid field enhancer a while back to strengthen Cowell's southern border (it faces the outer void). Without it, there is more of a chance for border failure when the Grid gets overloaded. That's when things are most vulnerable to displacement (or loss).

I really hope we don't go through this again...

/120/ed/31858/1.html

p.s. Grid borders are weakest in the center. The corners are stronger as they have more support. That's also where the energy that powers the Grid gets routed first.

/me sadly agrees. I went around and tried to find the X's, hoping that maybe Ilianexsi missed something, but found nothing. Even tried to be clever and played with beacons for scripted objects, looked underground, etc.. Nada.

I did have a moment of inspiration and searched for a sim named Moth. It turns out there is one and it's not too far from temple in Iris - only about 10 sims away to the NW. I got all excited and TP'ed over there to have a look. Results from spending a bunch of time looking around: nada.
