Things like "our database is having a headache, be gentle" are meant to be silly, the message in the screenshot is meant to be confrontational ("make room for those that pay"

They may phrase things poorly at times, but they never truly phrase things quite that badly.

The source doesn't help either: if it had been posted on Massively accompanied with an objective article I'd still have been highly sceptical, but it would have *some* credibility. Something that shows up on the herald as a rant really doesn't inspire any at all.

lol it's fake, would not be a smart move to have them even attempt this, most free accounts are the ones who help the economy along, so ok, block them from entering and then the vendors and land barons will have a cow because nobody is buying from them lol.

There was actually a blog post last year which said they were going to restrict logins in this manner when the grid was having issues. They've never done it that I'm aware of, but they at least gave it some thought and it does remain a possibility.

I still think the popup message is fake though.

It is real. The "mechanism" has been in place for just 25 minutes yesterday (June 12th). I think it's more an "experiment" to taste if it may works.
My opinion is that they should go on the opposite way (removing the premium membership) but as along membership premium are paying for something, it's fair that they receive some "privileges" (apart the live chat), this would be one of those privileges.
