i have just a slight correction.... neko does indeed mean cat. im not sure how that translates into a cat/person hybrid as its simply means cat, nothing more.
i have seen many animes with nekos in them, most all of them are thin tailed. how do the "long haired" nekos in SL make their fur on thier bodies long? because the fluffy tailed nekos i have seen have very very short fur.
what i truely find humorous are the people that spend thousands on outfits, hair and skin and wear freebie ears and tails.
EDIT: where are the muzzles and whiskers? cats have whiskers and sharp pointy teeth... and FUR!!! 90% of the "nekos" i have seen in SL have no fur...

From: Holocluck Henly
This is a fluffy cat tail as first posted by Desmond:

The other one I reposted from Argent is a horse tail.

If you're a neko you're not a horsecat mutation. You're a cat mutation.

If someone wants to reeinvent themselves that's fine. It's a healthy pursuit in SL to be unique. But some people are clinging to labels which don't define them, perhaps in an effort to redefine the label.

It won't work here because Neko means cat. It isn't a made up word of any sort. Neko doesnt mean "I wander around with any twitchy pointed ears and tail to look cool."

Lamby ears?

:P

In SL the Neko subculture consists of a hybrid cat-human, inspired by effecacious Japanese girl manga cartoons like Sailor Moon in which humans had an additional pair of ears sprouted from their hair.

Realistic cat avatars are -- cats

I am a bit confused that you would start this thread Holocluck Henly. Given your propensity to pose as a hologram and all. There's just something a bit off about you calling other people's SL into question in this way - even to this minor degree.

Not at all. I dont think a Klingon would come into sickbay with Ferengi ears much less claim they're a Ferengi. Fanboys I don't THINK would do that either.

And people who love cats. Why would they wear a horse's tail? I thought they loved everything about cats.

Btw the people who freaked about the Sailor Moon ref ignored the word INSPIRED in that post. I recall some blonde "I'm cute and I yell a lot with my mouth wide open" type characters with ears or horns on her head. Antarctic press followed suit in Ninja HS etc etc and so on

Isn't that up to the individual person? I mean if they are half and half, shouldn't they be able to claim one or the other as what they are? Or you putting them in a box and saying "Klingon features = Klingon" regardless of parents? I refer you to when Quark was head of that Klingon house. Granted there were no children off-spring from that (I don't think), but could have been. Since Q made every living creature in the universe cross-breed-able. Or whatever that weird explanation was. "here is goo, Captain, the goo that becomes human, Klingon, everything else - be careful or I destroy it!" Or whatever that was about. That scene still boogles the mind.

Otherwise Worf and Spock and all of them would be sterile like mules. (my mistake, apparently female mules can be fertile, rarely "Since 1527 there have been more than 60 documented cases of foals born to female mules around the world." (they have to be mated to horses, apparently))

Because it's cool?

Or maybe they're one of these...

Or even...

Edit... see my next message for Ursula Vernon's explanation for this image.

Well, I always said I was a demon kitty, not a neko. I use "Naked Neko" a lot because that is easier and seems "nicer" than "Naked Demonic Kitty".

I'm a kitty, I have, not wear, but have ears and tail. People see that and say "neko". It is easier to just nod than go into long explanation about "demonic kitty".

I guess nekos are like gryphons, you can mix and match anything you want.

The idea for this painting hit me last year, when I was driving across the Great Plains at twilight, watching the fireflies turn on and off in the verge. The figure underwent a dozen incarnations--woman, bear, buffalo, coyote, all Significantly Archetypal, but none of which really worked visually. Much to my dismay, the gryphon DID work. The horror. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against gryphons per se, even if their recent Lackey-fueled popularity explosion has made them almost as hackneyed a subject matter as unicorns and dragons, which obviously I will paint with blithe abandon. No, my problem is that gryphons are a threshold creature. People start with a gryphon, and the next thing you know, they've got a were-unileotigradracoplatylycahippocaprigry-fox, as if, unable to bear that someone else's Frankensteinan chimera may have more Charismatic Mammal parts, they have sent Igor to the zoo with a bonesaw and a tube of superglue. I always wonder how these people feel about genetically modified food. 'My tomato has ragweed DNA to prevent aphids. Your character has six seperate genuses and turns two others if you add water or the full moon.' (I'm pretty sure I'm gonna get reamed for this.) Despite all that, I enjoyed painting the gryphon, even if I did wander around the house going 'Bird lips! Bird lips!' Anyway. I do like the fireflies, and now that it's done, if I ever manage to make the buffalo work visually, I can always come back in a month or a year and insert her...
