No one said it was a Myth. We just don't think it's a big deal.

@3Ring. Thank You. You win the thread. :)

You know what? Stealth locking is a good thing. If it means that people will be more conscious about what they post, then I'm all for it. Don't want moderation? Moderate yourself.

How can you be more conscious about what you post if the mod does not share information about what rule was broken? That is the point of the thread. 'Lock because I have to power to do so' is not going to go over in the long run and will cause constant DRAMA. I do not think that is the effect that they want stealth locking to achieve. Back to the drawing boards on this one Lindens.

If all the flames and mocking in that thread aren't a clue I don't know what is. I agree that an explanation should generally be posted but let's get real, when it gets out of hand and becomes forum-wide joke, it should be closed.

This seems like a sensible approach to me. Despite giving Lias a bit of a hard time here, I can see her point. We ought to know when a thread is locked why it was locked. Otherwise, the same problem is going to keep recurring. On the other hand, it was pretty obvious why that one was locked and I can see why the moderator would not want to bump it to the top and just cause more drama. That one needed a covert death - which it is now not getting.

In the guns thread, we got an explanation from Millie. Like it or not, the moderator felt like the OP was just a chance for some guy to spam advertise his store. A agree with the decision there, incidentally, but that's irrelevant. The point is that she told us why she was locking it, maybe because it the reason wasn't as clear as it was in Lias' thread.

I have spent some time re-reading the forum guidelines, Torley's sticky and Strife's interpretation to the guidelines posted in Torley's Sticky.

The thread qualified in spades for the lock. It fell under having more trolling, flaming and personal discussion of a negative nature that the guidelines say goes to PM or other means.

It has been eye opening for me re-reading everything though. Resident Answers was never intended to become so locked down as it was. I really think Katt's coming in and knowing the rules has helped loosen things up some. There is no rule for example that all posts must contain a question, no rule that locked threads cannot be referenced, no rule archived messages cannot be referenced and many other assumed rules that RA has been under for some time now.

I do agree that threads locked should cite the reason. I believe this because as was stated by the Lindens it is about transparency. This prevents someone from just locking stuff due to their personal feelings as opposed to what are really the guidelines and rules.

There is a link in a post I made here earlier for us to challenge locks if they are not deserved and Lias should use that email address to ask about the stealth locks if she is so inclined.

The stealth locks don't bother me so much, but I do think for the benefit of the locker they should cite clear reasons so they are not challenged often as that would keep Katt hoping. hehe

Anyway.. just some thoughts milling around in my head. .02 cents is not worth much so take it as you like it. :)

So when you want a thread you disagree with closed just cut and paste a knock-knock joke at the bottom of it and wait for lock. Excellent policy.

That cesspool of flames, trolling, private insults deserved its death and you should be grateful for it since the vast majority of it makes you the butt of it. But even better? Moderate yourself and post questions that residents here can actually help with.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. This is primarily a help forum. If the "help" you seek is people backing you up on a controversial position, you shouldn't expect to find much help here.

I see Brenda helped by posting about another thread that was stealthly locked. Macphisto stayed on topic. And trout discussed the subject . The rest was what it usually is in a public forum.
