Look in the folder the gun was in and see if there is a notecard that gives you the command to turn off safety.
It would likely help if you said what kind of gun and who made it. Just in case someone has the same kind and can help.

seriously though..you may be in a sim with either scripts disabled or something along those lines..can you be more specific..type of gun how old it is..things like that..

Yes, Second Life isn't that bad. You have so much to live for .  Some guns also require you to be in Mouselook to shoot as well
