Also, can men please repress that urge they seem to have to send REAL pictures of their c*cks. Many of them look like really old frankfurters that were left behind in the beachhouse last summer. Or like those worms that you see in caves that never see the light of day. I am seriously considering opening a REAL tanning salon for men who want "bronzed" genitals. They look so pale and unfortunate, with generations of malnutrition behind them. Hey, it's a skin pigment issue, not my fault! |

As there are, I suppose, men who have female avs in order to get a sense of how people treat women? That makes sense, I guess. Do you think the insights that you gain in SL translate to RL as well? They translate, but on a very superficial level. Just like RL, there are people who don't notice, people who don't care, and people who are curious. And just like RL, there are people who are arseholes about it. Someone greeted with me in a store with "hello, you are very ugly" once*, and I've had people try telling me I can look different here from RL. All part of the experience. *My answer was "Only on the outside". _____________________

I have encountered in-world cross-dressers - by that I mean male avatars who dress as wormen, taking care to do the job nicely, but they are still clearly male avatars. Of course, I see nothing wrong in this, people can be who they like in SL, but I'm just surprised by the number of tranny avatars I see.

I have a female alt. I try to keep her as convincing as possible, especially since I spend a majority of my time in SL under that alt (Perhaps she would be better considered my main. LOL). Even though I'm a straight male, having a female avatar seems to make me more comfortable in the virtual environment. Even when I used to play role playing games, I was more comfortable with the female characters.
There are aspects of my personality that are different than most "traditional" males, and I often feel I "connect" more with females. I've always found women easier to talk to and, in many cases, more fun. Of course, there's also the added fun of shopping in SL, which I've enjoyed more as my female alt than with this one. I guess when it comes down to it, when I'm in SL as my female alt, I want to act and be treated as a female. In order for that to happen, I feel I need to make sure the avatar is not out of proportion, and that I'm not slipping into any male habits. |

And of course, part of THAT superficiality is the prevailing assumption, transplanted from RL culture, that, because one can, one necessarily SHOULD aspire to achieving the "perfect" expression of the two conventionally understood paradigms, male and female. Are you male? Then be the PERFECT male! Do you want to represent as female? Then HERE is how you do it . . . And of course, that is sort of the underlying assumption of this whole thread, isn't it? What makes that so odd, in some ways, is that SL is the perfect environment for leaving behind that binary paradigm. It's seemed to me, since pretty early on my time here, that this was kind of a Queer Theorist's dream come true: not only is gender identity very clearly a "construct" rather than something "essential" -- after all, you can change gender with a click of a mouse button -- but there is also the potential to break free of the binary here because one can assume any identity one wants to be. So SL need not be reductive about gender identity, even if it so frequently is. And, in a way, the whole point of this thread SHOULD be about stepping outside of the two-sided box that is, I suppose, actually implied by the very title "Men in Drag." Maybe the coolest thing about SL is that so many men and women DO experiment with gender identity here? Maybe the very exposure to a place where one can do that is enough to start people thinking about gender identity in RL? _____________________

The last I heard men made up 40%. I know where I live, a LOT of men do botox and lipo. Definitely West Coast. HEH! I had my left ear pierced once in 1990 and for the next few years got to hear other guys holler out "Hey FAGGOT!!!" Yea, so I dont think Botox & lipo would go so well here. Funny thing is, now those same idiots who used to holler out "Fag" to a guy with 1 pierced ear are now the same douchebags but with their ears Gauged!! I hate trendy douchebags. _____________________

Even in real, I end up in odd circumstances - from being tied to an anchor in the Bahamas to being asked to be a "plate" for a bloke who wanted to eat a cold vindaloo off my belly in Leeds. At least it was a COLD vindaloo. I smelt like a curry for ages after that and got some really funny looks. _____________________

Gender barriers are being broken here and online generally. It's more obvious here, but the rest of the web is helluva bigger place. I'd be happy to see some of that acceptance trickle down to RL. btw, there are people playing outside the gender binary... groups like gender transgressors and post-humanist clubs like Fracture. But mainly it's background noise compared to the barbies and triangle-shaped guys. _____________________
