PPS My female alt has never been called out; I find it very easy to switch gender - I just switch half my brain off. Dare we ask Pep to post as his female alt so that we can get a flavour of what his full brain is capable of???

From: Jig Chippewa Also, can men please repress that urge they seem to have to send REAL pictures of their c*cks. Many of them look like really old frankfurters that were left behind in the beachhouse last summer. Or like those worms that you see in caves that never see the light of day. I am seriously considering opening a REAL tanning salon for men who want "bronzed" genitals. They look so pale and unfortunate, with generations of malnutrition behind them. Hey, it's a skin pigment issue, not my fault!

From: Scylla Rhiadra As there are, I suppose, men who have female avs in order to get a sense of how people treat women? That makes sense, I guess. Do you think the insights that you gain in SL translate to RL as well? They translate, but on a very superficial level. Just like RL, there are people who don't notice, people who don't care, and people who are curious. And just like RL, there are people who are arseholes about it. Someone greeted with me in a store with "hello, you are very ugly" once*, and I've had people try telling me I can look different here from RL. All part of the experience. *My answer was "Only on the outside".

From: Pserendipity Daniels PS 'Abrogate' in the sense 'set aside for their own purposes' which was applied to land theft in the Middle Ages in England. I think you're missing the mark on this word. From: someone to abrogate (third-person singular simple present abrogates, present participle abrogating, simple past and past participle abrogated)
(transitive) To annul by an authoritative act; to abolish by the authority of the maker or his successor; to repeal; -- applied to the repeal of laws, decrees, ordinances, the abolition of customs, etc. Let us see whether the New Testament abrogates what we so frequently see in the Old. - Robert South Whose laws, like those of the Medes and Persian, they cannot alter or abrogate. - Edmund Burke (transitive) To put an end to; to do away with. Men generally do NOT want to "abolish", "put and end to" or "do away with" women with long legs and big perky tits.

From: Argent Stonecutter I don't think I've ever seen anyone else in SL "cross dressing" without being in an androgynous avatar. I have, a couple of times. Looks odd, to my (admitedly culturally biased) eye.

I have encountered in-world cross-dressers - by that I mean male avatars who dress as wormen, taking care to do the job nicely, but they are still clearly male avatars. Of course, I see nothing wrong in this, people can be who they like in SL, but I'm just surprised by the number of tranny avatars I see.

I often walk around looking like a 2 story tall Optimus Prime, or a giant rat, or ED-209 from RoboCop., or a dozen other different, odds creatures and robots.
So if some dude wants to look like a girl with big boobs, let him.

I have a female alt. I try to keep her as convincing as possible, especially since I spend a majority of my time in SL under that alt (Perhaps she would be better considered my main. LOL). Even though I'm a straight male, having a female avatar seems to make me more comfortable in the virtual environment. Even when I used to play role playing games, I was more comfortable with the female characters. There are aspects of my personality that are different than most "traditional" males, and I often feel I "connect" more with females. I've always found women easier to talk to and, in many cases, more fun. Of course, there's also the added fun of shopping in SL, which I've enjoyed more as my female alt than with this one. I guess when it comes down to it, when I'm in SL as my female alt, I want to act and be treated as a female. In order for that to happen, I feel I need to make sure the avatar is not out of proportion, and that I'm not slipping into any male habits.

And just like RL, there are people who are arseholes about it. Someone greeted with me in a store with "hello, you are very ugly" once*, and I've had people try telling me I can look different here from RL. All part of the experience. Part of the problem . . . and a subtext to this entire discussion, really . . . is that people in SL themselves tend to operate "on a very superficial level," perhaps because we rely so heavily upon the external and visual "signs" and clues about identity and personality here. And of course, part of THAT superficiality is the prevailing assumption, transplanted from RL culture, that, because one can, one necessarily SHOULD aspire to achieving the "perfect" expression of the two conventionally understood paradigms, male and female. Are you male? Then be the PERFECT male! Do you want to represent as female? Then HERE is how you do it . . . And of course, that is sort of the underlying assumption of this whole thread, isn't it? What makes that so odd, in some ways, is that SL is the perfect environment for leaving behind that binary paradigm. It's seemed to me, since pretty early on my time here, that this was kind of a Queer Theorist's dream come true: not only is gender identity very clearly a "construct" rather than something "essential" -- after all, you can change gender with a click of a mouse button -- but there is also the potential to break free of the binary here because one can assume any identity one wants to be. So SL need not be reductive about gender identity, even if it so frequently is. And, in a way, the whole point of this thread SHOULD be about stepping outside of the two-sided box that is, I suppose, actually implied by the very title "Men in Drag." Maybe the coolest thing about SL is that so many men and women DO experiment with gender identity here? Maybe the very exposure to a place where one can do that is enough to start people thinking about gender identity in RL?

I liked what you said (even if I havent got a fu&king clue about half of what you are on about.) I'm gonna learn some of it for my next meeting with some "people" in real and stun them with science. It just reminded me of this time when this bloke picked me up in sl and tped me to his home. Nice place. Then he said he would be BRB so I waited. Starkers playing with the bed-balls and myself. Anyway, about 5 minutes later on he comes again. "Oh," he chats, "Sorry about the wait. I was inflating my doll." "wha?" I said. "My doll. In real. I have a inflatable doll. Now I'm ready." "Wha?" "Do missionary," he chirrups, "so I can mimic you in real" "With the doll?" "Yes," he pipes up, "YOU are the doll." "Jeepers!" I typed, "My partner's on line!" (Great exit line). There are some strange types in sl.

From: Clarissa Lowell The last I heard men made up 40%. I know where I live, a LOT of men do botox and lipo. Definitely West Coast. HEH! I had my left ear pierced once in 1990 and for the next few years got to hear other guys holler out "Hey FAGGOT!!!" Yea, so I dont think Botox & lipo would go so well here. Funny thing is, now those same idiots who used to holler out "Fag" to a guy with 1 pierced ear are now the same douchebags but with their ears Gauged!! I hate trendy douchebags.

Even in real, I end up in odd circumstances - from being tied to an anchor in the Bahamas to being asked to be a "plate" for a bloke who wanted to eat a cold vindaloo off my belly in Leeds. At least it was a COLD vindaloo. I smelt like a curry for ages after that and got some really funny looks.

Maybe the very exposure to a place where one can do that is enough to start people thinking about gender identity in RL? Hooray for that thought. Gender barriers are being broken here and online generally. It's more obvious here, but the rest of the web is helluva bigger place. I'd be happy to see some of that acceptance trickle down to RL. btw, there are people playing outside the gender binary... groups like gender transgressors and post-humanist clubs like Fracture. But mainly it's background noise compared to the barbies and triangle-shaped guys.

I think the real reason you hear a guy-as-girl talk like this is, they get their dialog from Porn.
