From: Darkness Anubis "I will never understand why some men go to insane lengths to get into womens clothing, hose and lingerie when women spen most of thier lives trying to avoid bras and pantyhose!" Many, many men will "go to insane lengths to get into women's clothing, hose and lingerie", it's just a question of who's wearing the items in the first place. By the way, I totally agree with your point about cross-dressing not necessarily being all about dragging it up. However, the OP was more focused on the latter whereas the matter-of-fact approach to cross-dressing doesn't seem to be very common in SL. That is when you discount newbies who haven't looked closely enough at the contents of their freebie boxes.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone else in SL "cross dressing" without being in an androgynous avatar.

Interestingly, I have a friend who was working, at one point, on a body shape for transsexuals. Meaning, in other words, a shape that retained the distinctive physical characteristics of an RL male who had undergone a sex change operation. I found this fascinating: that given the chance to simply look like any other female in SL, some transsexuals identify themselves AS transsexual, rather than as (for example) female.

From: Jig Chippewa If it comes to that, men AS men are equally disengaging. Many is the time I have read the unsexiest commentaries one can imagine as my avi is being pawed by a man: "Feel my c@ck slamming your cervix, c#m-bucket" does not encourage me to multi-orgasm. And I must say I have NEVER had a bf say that in real or anything remotely like it - so why do they do it in sl????
My gf once told me that she never thought she'd enjoy being called raunchy names (among other things) until I came along. Now she craves it. She is one freaky chick. You should also see the way she dresses... ...and yes, I know for a fact she's a rl woman. lol

From: Jig Chippewa Also, can men please repress that urge they seem to have to send REAL pictures of their c*cks. Many of them look like really old frankfurters that were left behind in the beachhouse last summer. Or like those worms that you see in caves that never see the light of day. I am seriously considering opening a REAL tanning salon for men who want "bronzed" genitals. They look so pale and unfortunate, with generations of malnutrition behind them. I cannot stop laughing. This is SO true! But gosh Jig, the images won't leave my head and I need to be serious for a meeting later. Laughing.........

I found this fascinating: that given the chance to simply look like any other female in SL, some transsexuals identify themselves AS transsexual, rather than as (for example) female. I have an avatar... an entire alt in fact, which serves that purpose. My clothing in that role is usually slightly androgynous female. I'd rather be seen as female than TS, and most of my time in SL reflects that. The point of the transsexual-looking av is to help me get a handle on how people treat transsexuals. It gives me a perspective I just don't get as a (hopefully) convincing woman.

As there are, I suppose, men who have female avs in order to get a sense of how people treat women? That makes sense, I guess. Do you think the insights that you gain in SL translate to RL as well? From: Jig Chippewa Must get myself going for the day, but one point I wanna make (yes I am going to be just the same in a roundtable discussion in real today) is how I wish that MEN would be better "women" when they have sex. I overhear the most outrageous comments that really put me off my rhythm: "Make me moan with that python of a breadbox" is either badly translated Japanese or beyond the realm of any reality OR virtuality I have encountered. Even "Disco-Stick" is more down-to-earth If it comes to that, men AS men are equally disengaging. I think there are probably a fair number of guys whose only exposure to "descriptive prose" in these situations has been text porn (or Penthouse Letters for the old-school - does anybody know if this still exists btw?) and it hasn't occurred to them that python/pounded cervix/shaft of lightning type references weren't intended as erotic imagery to turn on women or anything a woman would say herself, but instead are designed to instill a sense of Power and Potency and, umm, "Super-Adequacy" ( ) and such as part of the crude descriptive function. All for guys. And all written by other guys who are probably always reaching for fresh new metaphors to excite their audiences. Plus everybody who bothers to think about it at all wants to be considered as literate and imaginative, and not everybody is. The unfortunate (but hilarious!) phrases being discussed here are probably the result of trying too hard, combined with the mistaken idea that porn authors must know what they're doing. I wonder how many of these guys read the infamous "I put on my robe and wizard hat" logs and laugh, but think bloodninja's basic mistake was to go with geeky wizard imagery instead of Thor, God Of Thunder. * OMG I managed to distill the essence of both Freud and Nietzsche into the awesome catch phrase "Super-Adequacy". Good thing I'm not the type to go writing scholarly theses or the world would never be the same.

You mean like that sort of first encounter experience? Uh, yeah. Pretty much exactly like that. I wonder whether men should be mandated to take on a female avi for a set amount of time, on first joining SL, as a means of "sensitivity training" . . . ? (That's a joke. Well, mostly a joke.)

Overhead in a lesbian social environment.. -- that would be lesbian as in girls who like girls as opposed to a sign of the Zodiac -- - Various emotes - then - "Yeah baby. I want you to cum and squirt on my dick!" Ohhhhhhhhhhh! That's a big sentence to type one-handed. I very much doubt that it was copy-pasted in the circumstances. ...and a *bit* of a giveaway A real lesbian would have said "squirt on my penis".

From: Ephraim Kappler ...I'm working on a female alt these days, which I need for work but I guess I'll get around to taking her out for a fling sometime. Fact is I could knock a pretty good male avatar together in an afternoon now because I've done so many. This gal is proving to be hard work for me though. Being a bit of a stickler for detail, I can't just knock something together with a fine ass and good bazoombas. It's a whole new set of sliders getting her to look 'believable'... Ephraim, IM me in world. Or turn your forum PMs on.

The original post assumes that "real" men act according to a certain set of stereotypes, and "real" women act according to a certain set of stereotypes.
Virtual worlds (going back to MUDs and IRC) started out male-dominated, and the social conventions that started on in the male-dominated virtual worlds have continued even as more women have entered. Women entering virtual worlds has not created some sort of feminist revolution. Instead, it's gone down the more usual path of social assimilation- when one finds oneself to be a stranger in Rome, do as the Romans do. The easiest way for a woman to fit in with a group of men is to act like one of the boys.
Besides, if one assumes that one's partner is more turned on by XXX porno than a Harlequin romance, one may make more of an attempt to deliver XXX porno instead of the Harlequin romance. Otherwise, one might fear losing that partner.

I have a female alt, but neither of my avs are in SL for sex. It's no big deal and it's no secret.
In Toontown Online most players (who get 6 characters with their subscription) will make both male and female toons. One gets neater shirts than the other for different occasions *shrugs*

From: Argent Stonecutter I don't think I've ever seen anyone else in SL "cross dressing" without being in an androgynous avatar. You should get out more Argent. There are photos of a most definitely *not* androgynous Pep at a Cartel party in a delicious red satin ballgown with matching accessories . . . Pep ( . . . and further photos, for which I have not yet comeup with the blackmail money, of him in an air hostess uniform at a Phat's Bad Taste Competition;"I wuz robbed!" PS 'Abrogate' in the sense 'set aside for their own purposes' which was applied to land theft in the Middle Ages in England. PPS My female alt has never been called out; I find it very easy to switch gender - I just switch half my brain off.
