From: Brenda Connolly I must admit that one of the smarter men I dated (There haven't been that manym sadly) had a good comeback. I would ask him "How much effort can it take for you to put the seat back down?" His response: "About as much as it would take for you to do it". Brenda, thats not smart, thats logic... a male traint.

From: Conifer Dada SL is doll's house, Barbie, Action Man, Lego, model railways, Simpsons, Dilbert, Star Wars, Burning Man Festival, all rolled into one big chatroom with music. I have mentioned to several friends (and probably shouldn't admit it on a public forum) that AT LAST we men have a legitimate way to play with our Barbies (I mean, our Kens) and our doll houses. This also brings back a lot of Lego memories for me. So far my doll house is somewhat Brady-like, with its 1960s stone and glass architecture and its conspicuously missing toilet. I just need a wood-panel station wagon and a blue-uniformed housekeeper spouting off goofy one-liners.

From: Brandi Lundquist On the original topic, I'll say this... SL is just a game in some ways, but there are real people behind the avatars acting on a personal level with other avatars. It's not a game where you interact with AI, so I'm sure for many, rl feelings will get involved at times. Keeping those feelings on an appropriate scale is something a person with a healthy RL should have no problem with. Obviously, as Ava stated earlier the woman you speak of is mentally ill. She may have trouble judging boundries as a healthy minded person would. This sums it up well, I think. I see it as a case of two separate worlds, each of them "real" in its own way. The pixels and so forth are clearly not "real", and while I certainly appreciate the attention to detail and artistry that some people put into their avatars, I can't really see being "attracted" to an avatar as such -- as a reflection of the person, perhaps, but not in itself. At the same time, the personal interactions that take place in SL are very real because at the end of the day it is two real people interacting with each other in real time -- it creates its own reality, even if that reality is simply a mutually shared fantasy. Now, that reality is different from First Life by varying degrees -- some people have Second Lives that are similar in some respects to their First Lives, while others have two very different personas, each playing itself out in its own space. The key, for me, is not to try to say that "real feelings should not be involved in SL" because that's pretty impossible -- feelings *will* be involved when two people are interacting closely, even if it is only in text, unless you artificially step in and restrain yourself, or limit yourself. I prefer not to do that, because I see it as limiting. The key for me, rather, is to keep the two worlds separate from each other -- not by restraining what I think and feel in Second Life, but by maintaining a hard barrier between the two worlds, so that I can live fully, and feel fully, in each of them with as little bleedthrough as possible either way. It can be a challenge at times, of course, but I find that it's worth the effort because it allows me to be more fully present in SL, while also keeping SL in its proper perspective, in its proper sphere, so to speak.
