Hey guys.
Love visiting new places in SL, travelling that world one sim at a time and writing about them in my group. However unless you know what you're looking for you'll never find the best ones as the search engine is awful.
What are you're favorite places in SL. Can be favorite places to shop, relax, dance, visit or just for pure weirdness value.
Any tips for unusual or different places would be great, we should all go off the beaten track sometimes.
Thankies

We should really have a sticky for this question.
You'll get lots of answers, but the names you will see recurring constantly are,
Greenies Privateer (my new favorite) Apollo Svarga SL Botanical Gardens The Reflections sims (Midnight reflections, etc)
put "explore" in search and you'll get some interesting hits.

I think I'm actually going to make a real List this time. I've got my pencil and paper poised; maybe we can hunt down Strife and force him at mouse-point to make a sticky..

I don't think there should be a sticky on this. Places come and go to frequently. I'd say, just have your lists ready at hand to copy and past here. For the OP. Here's some threads that will give you plenty of answers: /327/cb/212810/1.html /327/88/230840/1.html

I've often wondered why there is not a "Best places to visit" thing at the Entrance....of course then people would pay to have their link at the top and it would be worthless.

I recently visited Tooter Claxton's mainstore and had a laugh. It's right beside Linden's 'railway' so you can follow the tracks afterwards to where ever they lead - hobo style. Just make sure you stand beside his avatar cart and listen-in to his brother's comments... Not saying more. Also, there have been many threads, here's one with a huge list. /327/1c/229319/1.html

Carnival of Doom, ffs! Why do people always mention Greenies, but not the Carnival?

Whats a sticky and how do I get one? If you look at the top of the list of threads the sticky's are the yellow ones. They are called that because they are always there listed first. And a big welcome to the forums!

From: Ann Launay Carnival of Doom, ffs! Why do people always mention Greenies, but not the Carnival? I went to the Carnival once and I didn't understand the appeal. Sure it was creepy but not enough to hold my interest long. The only ride that seemed to work (or didn't I should say) was the Merry-Go-Round and I did end up in the waiting room in hell. Did I miss things? Was there more?

Yes! Read the stickies at the top of the thread page. You will learn so much. And as Bradley, said. Welcome aboard!

Whats a sticky and how do I get one? A sticky is a thread that the administrators have made "stick" to the top of the forum page. They are shown as yellow at the top of the list on these forums. Making them stick just means that they don't rotate off the bottom of the page and get lost. There are some questions that get asked a lot - because they are really good questions, usually. It would be nice to have a sticky thread for them that we could easily find and point people towards. Bradley has a good point, though. Also, it might seem like LL is favoring certain places in SL if it stickied a thread like that, so I guess I'll retract my earlier statement and agree that maybe this shouldn't be a sticky.

If I can get Strife to make a thread of mine a sticky, I promise to update the first post (The Big List) if places disappear, or if other people find new places. It's been done down in the Texturing Hints forum...

Did I miss things? Was there more? Oh, no, you can die in all sorts of ways. There are games to play which give prizes, food to eat (although you may not want to), a fortune teller, a freak show, a little house off to one side, cornfields and a small hobo forest to explore...I think they took the chicken building out though, which makes me sad. Anyway, lots to do!

Furry Vermin
It's on an astroide with a near by space station. Really cool build. Lots of sci-fi images from Lost in Space to the pipboy from Fallout. Not so much of Star Trek or Star Wars ... that's just too easy. Furry sim to boot.

From: Isabeau Imako I recently visited Tooter Claxton's mainstore and had a laugh. It's right beside Linden's 'railway' so you can follow the tracks afterwards to where ever they lead - hobo style. Just make sure you stand beside his avatar cart and listen-in to his brother's comments... Not saying more. A good way to get there, too: Go to the railway station in Mocha and catch the GSLR train. Wave at the horsies as you go by them, say hi to some of the newbies in Periwinkle, and get off at the end of the line in Purple. Transfer there to the automated ferry boat (be sure to sit before it takes off!). Ogle at ANWR (you can get off and wait for the next ferry, or just stay on board and wait for a minute before it heads off again), then depart the ferry at the end of its line. Laugh at the griefer containment pool nexxt to the station, and walk the tracks north. Just up a ways in the railyard (which is pretty cool itself), check out Tooter Claxton's really cool and kinda weird avatars, and check out the action at the Calleta infohub. Also, be sure to poke around this area for Arcadia Asylum's very cool freebies. It makes for a fun bit of travel in the mainland, doing things that many miss in Second Life. Mari

Oh, and another vote for Privateer Space. To me, it is this year's "Greenies." A total must-visit region.
Mari (Who, yes, also hopes you'll visit the one she does the most work on!)

I usually explore alone, (can choose my time, etc.). Mostly a last minute decision on my part, anyway. I don't mind so much, but I can see that for most newbies who come in here to meet others, end up in clubs and the such. They find exploring all these cool places a lonely thing.
There are moments when I wish I was seeing these places with someone else, but I'm not close to anyone inworld at the moment, and being alone isn't always as bad as it's made out to be. I'm a bit of a slow typer and saying "Oh, that was fun!" or "LOL" doesn't properly convey the fact that I'm actually laughing out loud.
The groups I belong to often organize events specific to the group, and they're great. But just going off to explore random places is, I think, something you do with a friend or, if you aren't 'close' to anyone, alone. This might be why many of the newly arrived don't explore as much.

They're encouraging (although not requiring) roleplaying now, so if you have any quirky circus-y clothes, you might want to wear them.
