The main reason why First Land was dropped was partly to do with resale but partly to do with other issues as well.

1 - First Land wasn't generated for every user; instead, the Lindens would put it out a sim at a time, at random times of day. This usually meant that there would be a huge rush for the First Land at that moment, and if you missed the rush, you went without your First Land until the next time some became available. The Lindens never announced when it would be available (if they did, everyone would log in at that time and the rush would be even worse), so many people were left never knowing when they would get their first land, even though their membership timer kept ticking just the same.

2 - First Land sims were regular sims, including terrain and water features etc. This meant that exactly what you got for your L$512 would vary wildly. If you were fortunate, you'd get beautiful waterfront. If you weren't, you'd get near-useless land. This made the rushing even worse.

3 - When you bought First Land, the entire sim was First Land. This meant you would have no idea what your neighbours were going to do....

4 - ... and as such, land griefing on First Land was very common. Instead of trying to export huge amounts of L$ from newbies, the favoured scam was to ask the newbie to sell their First Land for far less than it was worth, because they'd still make a profit compared to the L$512 they paid for it, but far less than they could have done.

And now, I can only find mention of it here and in the Second Life Wiki. Apparently, even the SL Support Portal stuff is FINALLY up to date. Now it says, "What happened to First Land?"

I'm curious as to how people find out about it now, though. I mean, is it others in SL telling them about it?

It's in "Second Life: the Official Guide", available from Amazon for a lot more than I paid for it. Not a bad book, but time-to-market means not everything is going to be up to date.

Publishing is another system that suffers from lag.

You'd be surprised, the two often go together. Not with land though.

first land issues could have easily been fixed by adding two rules two first land plots.

can only resell back to the lindens.
if you cancel your resident subscription your first land gets resold to the lindens(resident subscription is that $9 one with the stipend and 512 meters, I think I got the name right but here clarification if otherwise).

look problem solved; new players get to still have the cheap land to get them addicted to the game, they'll always have neighbors, and they get to meet other new players.

first land isn't here because the lindens don't care or want it, just another way they're suiciding themselves. (the only possible good reason I could possibly think of them removing it is because when it did work the sims were laggy as you could get making future land ownership seem dismal)

I'm just over a month old and had been wondering about first land too..

Where i heard about it was..

Wikipedia, Lindens official guide to SL, Several non official SL sites run by residents..

I wish they had brought it back.

Snowman, would you like to come and live in our harbor? I've been trying to figure out how the heck to rent those watery square meters... :D

A tale of two housemates...

Myself and my housemate are both premies... we made the decision a couple of months in to start looking for land to get settled. She held out for first land, I just thought sod it and bought a small plot - a 512 for $L4750 if memory serves.

Within a week it soon became apparent that 117 prims is next to nothing and I upgraded to 896 of nice waterfriont land, selling the 512... then upped the ante on the 896 to buy land off a surrounding resident and eventually had a 1536, with a separate plot on the same sim of another 512... 2048 holdings in just about a month after going premie. My Housemate in this time had seen no evidence whatsoever of first land being made available... and neither had anyone else. Then the announcement came. She took over my 512 spare until she too realised that her holdings were never going to cut what she wanted to do. Eventually, we both sold up our respective land and went halves on a 4096 plot in the middle of four PG sims with a protected Linden road running along two edges of it... but even this proved too small for me; and she in turn bought me out of the 4096 and I now rent, rather than own, a GOOD deal more than that

In all honesty, I can't see how 512m can ever be anything more than a stepping stone.

The lack of a first land program isn't a great loss in that respect; particularly with the way it was handled towards the end...

I run an estate rental area called SkyBeam FirstLand, being my nod to offering a bit of the same sort of program. I charge a 512L security deposit, which I cheerfully refund when a resident leaves as long as rent is not past due and they notify me they are leaving. Rent is 500L a week. It works out to below the 9.95 premium (which isn't required to rent) and you get 234 prims instead of 117. The downside is there is a covenant, but the region has its own covenant with lesser restrictions than my main estate.

oh, so now we move to sigs? half the users have their stuff in their sigs and don`t see you make comments about that to anyone?

btw, remember you had it aswell? hmm...

so if this is not a case of double standards with advertising when some one is not in the "forum clan", what is it? another excuse why the clan is allowed to advertise with stupid questions "what do you think of ****" or else there won`t be a "question"

nice try...

I agree the "what do you think of" gambit is lame. I also think this is pretty lame:

i`ve reported a couple dozen threads allready, going back 20 pages just for fun, if they aren`t going to mod this place, they`ll get spammed with post reports like they have never been yet...
That's why I mentioned your sig and not other people's.

As far as the clan thing, last time I checked you were in the group/clan/clique with everyone else. Did I miss something?

that post i reported aswell like any other advertisement post made here, who ever is going to mod will find their report box piling over

don`t see the connection to sigs tho?

also you don`t see me making these lame posts shuving in an ad in every single hole i can find, unlike the regulars who think they can advertise they see fit where ever they want, love what the FC stands for ingame, but here it turned into a group of "we don`t care aslong it is one of our own" of wich i`ll gladly decline any involvement here unlike some others who think this has gone to far

I apologize for the mention of your sig. it is an appropriate way to advertise versus the others. And I made the spam mention on this thread first so I guess we are both arguing on the same side. But gave up trying to enforce rules here or report posts long ago. Now I just make annoying sarcastic comments when people are too obvious with their motives like in post #33.

np

but this is the thing rhaorth, strauss and me tried to make clear in the other thread, every one who so happily posts along with anything if made by a regular instead of derailing or not posting but as you did, snatch at any one else making any sort of advertisement by others

this is why i linked these threads as "it`s fine" in FC threads but not here
if it takes a couple more pointers for several people befor they get the clue, so be it, i have time, like this place and a big yap

For me, it's the ones that are just blatantly advertising that that I might comment on. I don't care who it is or what clan they belong to. Unless it's Trout. He's been working out and can kick my ass.

Alicia, you are the first person going on my ignore list. Hell, I don't even have Nina, Jumpy or Chaos on there.

Have a good life and I hope you find something that makes you happy.

I'm pretty sure that SL User's Guide book that came out last year mentions First Land. I occasionally get IMs from people who see my quote there (unrelated to First Land), so I know people are still reading it.

Everyone who signed up Premium in 2007 for First Land didn't miss much anyway. LL would only release a very few parcels every month. You had to wait around for ages, and even then it might be a crappy parcel.

Hmm so aren't we allowed to advertise in sigs or is it seen as poor form? Or is it just some people overdo it? Or do I need more bling in sig to keep up :)

No, it's fine. I was just pointing out some perceived hypocracy, but by doing so, I was laying down the same types of judgements as the person I was commenting on, so I backed off.

It's all about trying to control the forum. I tried for a while after Strife left, but it's futile. Plus it's an official moderator's job, not mine.

Now I just try to be helpful. Or funny. Once a week I usually succeed at one or the other.

*nods* Yeppers. It was this way back when I started too. See, it's rather like the rest of Gov Linden's land in that it took forever for it to go to auction and then it was only if another user expressed interest in the land did it go up as First Land or auction. There were some months when NO First Land was released, unless one of us nudged them to do it.

So, rather than fix the system in any way, they chose to do away with it.
