EDIT: BTW, Michael, I'm actually interested in discussing the fully immersive world you were talking about. To be fair, the subject really was online relationships, so you can't get too upset about people calling you on that, but the direction you took it is pretty interesting and relevant to the topic. I'm ignorant on the subject, but it sounds like a fascinating concept. And Trout, try and understand the direction the discussion took was completely warranted. I was relating online relationships to futuristic virtual spaces...you don't have to be a scientist to relate the two. I'm sorry some people don't see the connection--it's most certainly there. _____________________

QFT! lol - Sunni. I was seconds away from QFT'ing your post about your relationship when I saw this. You are the perfect example of what I was talking about. _____________________

You just posted half of my reply...the other half has a particular disclaimer about YOUR post subject. That's a very common 'cheat.' I hope you are on the level with what I'm saying here. _____________________

Even in futuristic spaces online relationships will not matter nearly as much as Starvation and troubles with over population. Thats the point you tried to duck. |

i too would say i cant agree with that...

i also live with my partner for over 10 years now, and we met online back in the days of prodigy.com...and it went much as the previous posted stated...we chatted for hours, "knew" each other...graduated into phone conversations, several real life trips to different places and finally i picked up and moved...
so no, if you arent lying from the start, you can have a very nice experience with "online relationships"... i still have several people i dearly love online...i wouldnt drop my real life relationship for them...but love is love... _____________________

Re: Immersive virtual reality: I think SL and its ilk are the first step toward this. God knows we've all heard of Snow Crash or Bladerunner or Necromancer; those introductions into virtual worlds aren't necessarily the harbingers of what WILL be, only what COULD be. What WILL be is what we decide it to be. If we decide that we want our VR society to be a virtual EHarmony, well then sure it will be. If we decide that we want real VR marriages (not these SL "partnerships"
it's up to us to define the boundaries. Who/what/for how long (I can imagine a contracted marriage period, where partners marry for a specific period of time like 6 months in RL and VR).But to sit here and say that a true VR will destroy society just isn't fair to society. I'd give us human beings a little more credit than that. _____________________

I just pressed the quote button. I didn't edit anything out. Must not have been there when I pressed Quote. Definitely wasn't when I read it. Hmmm...don't know. I don't think I edited that part. Straaaange. Ok people. Let us just stay positive here. Obviously we all love to debate, and we are all drawn to drama...that is why even those who seem diplomatic and levelheaded, continue to post... I don't think the topic swaying off a little should have even been an issue. But because you guys love drama...you call it out. I thought my insight into the topic was...insightful and intelligent. You guys always finding problem with my 'view' on things...well now..that's why we always seem to be bickering. _____________________

Hmmm...don't know. I don't think I edited that part. Straaaange. Hate to tell you...but Collette's right. If you didn't edit it, something else happened. The last part wasn't there the first time I read that particular post either. I agree that someday virtual reality will be intense and much more realistic than we can possibly imagine. But I think that humans, as a species, may find that fascinating to an extreme extent, however will still eventually long for the actual touch of another person. However, since real love is much more mental than phsyical, who really knows? Maybe I wasn't "in love" with my husband before we physically spent time together, but whatever else it was, it was very strong. |

But to sit here and say that a true VR will destroy society just isn't fair to society. I'd give us human beings a little more credit than that. im gonna get bonked for this, but thats kinda half true. with the leaps and bounds the interwebs have been taking these last, oh i say 15 years, it is increasingly showing how isolated society is becoming. ever sit on a bus or train platform and watch how many people have on mp3 players? or are talking or texting? look how much easier it is to shop online. it won't be long before you'd never have to leave your home due to increasing VR related games and the like. sometimes society doesn't realize whats happened to them until it's too late. _____________________
There's, uh, probably a lot of things you didn't know about lindens. Another, another interesting, uh, lindenism, uh, there are only three jobs available to a linden. The first is making shoes at night while, you know, while the old cobbler sleeps. You can bake cookies in a tree. But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

Ummm...I'm not arguing with you. What the hellll was that all about? Wow, this forum is a nut-house. I apologize. Maybe I misread your post. You said "Try to understand the direction the discussion took was completely warranted". I read into that the implication that I didn't understand that the direction the discussion took was warranted. Seems like a reasonable, if incorrect interpretation of what you said. In reality, I did understand, and I agree that the direction was warranted. So - we were in agreement. My post was a little snarky, a reaction to a patronizing tone I imputed to your post. That "try to understand" phrase made me feel like you think I'm too stupid to understand, which I found annoying. In retrospect, I think I over-interpreted your comment, and I'm sorry for that. At any rate, the concept of an immersive virtual reality fascinates me. _____________________

But the truth is global warming and overpopulation and a variety of real life threats are scarier and more urgent for us on this planet. i dont see how online dating could even compare. |

I am bothered by that because I could have come up with something funnier to say with the second version. |

huh? ![]() sorry i read this part and assumed you were saying something about our future on the planet since thats what Michael was discussing, which you responded to? so i assumed you meant people would stay home and not interact or procreate? or are you just mourning social change? I totally agree with you on this! It IS sort of scary and it CAN be isolating. But people thought the same thing about the automobile, the telephone, and the television. All have been part of our current societies for 50 years at the very least. Yeah I hate the MP3 players and Gameboys as much as the next 30-something who actually enjoys a real discussion now and then. But for the kids growing up with them, these things are used to complement, not control their lives. My gf's 13 year old kid is the biggest techno-junkie on the planet but he still has more friends than I do and can still talk a mean streak of Roman history (that's where he is in school, I guess.) His society isn't my society, but does that make it wrong? I still haven't figured out how to get the 12:00 off my VCR. I guess that makes me an old codger, but I don't think we're destroying society, just moving its evolution along a little more quickly than it's used to. _____________________
