Hi there , I am a researcher from Swansea University, United Kingdom. I am doing research about behaviour in Second Life, in particular, about things that might be considered as 'deviant'. In this research, deviant behaviours are those that break some social norms and rules. I am interested in all sorts of behaviour, which could be seen as deviant. There are many misunderstandings and misinterpretations of Second Life in its personal and professional uses. The purpose of this research is to ask residents about your experiences of and opinions about Second Life as a community and activities you see and experience within this community. From today onwards, I will post a new thread consists 4 questions for discussion every few days. At this moment I have 16 questions in need to be discussed and debated. However, during the discussion you are always welcome to suggest new questions and start new debates. This is the final stage of my research. Your opinions are crucial to me and will be reflected in my analysis. Please help me with this research by giving me your opinion. If you do not wish to share your opinion with other residents on this forum, you are always welcome to email the answers to me at RosserWriter@swansea.ac.uk More details about this research can be found on the project web page: http://www.cs.swan.ac.uk/SecondLifeResearch/Rosser Writer Researcher Swansea University United Kingdom Today's Questions: 1. Some people suggest that Second Life encourages deviant activities. Do you feel your behaviour is less inhibited in Second Life than the physical world? 2. Some people suggest that Second Life mirrors the physical world. Is your experience of Second Life remote from, or close to, the physical world in which you reside? 3. There is 3D avatar creation technology in Second Life, do you want an avatar that closely resembles you, or realises some new desired image? 4. In the communities of Second Life, there are various norms and rules, how do they shape your views about deviant activities?

Your full disclosure will hinder you. If you had pretended to be just another resident, and surreptitiously started threads with your questions after gaining our trust, you might have got serious answers. As it is, and as a researcher, you should research what happens to survey type threads here.

1. Yes. There are crazy people all around me yet I am the only sane one 2. Nope. I can't fly in real life... nor can I find so many pretty women in one location willing to talk with me in real life 3. Why look like me in 2 places? 4. I just don't understand this question... NEXT

Yes. From: Rosser Writer 2. Some people suggest that Second Life mirrors the physical world. Is your experience of Second Life remote from, or close to, the physical world in which you reside?
No. From: Rosser Writer 3. There is 3D avatar creation technology in Second Life, do you want an avatar that closely resembles you, or realises some new desired image?
I'd have this much metal in my face in RL if my kids and family would not freak out. From: Rosser Writer 4. In the communities of Second Life, there are various norms and rules, how do they shape your views about deviant activities?
Norms and Rules? Are there? This is wrong. There are no norms and rules about 'deviant' activity in SL unless you are a child avatar. Sex with Minotaurs for the win!

From: Rosser Writer 2. Some people suggest that Second Life mirrors the physical world. Is your experience of Second Life remote from, or close to, the physical world in which you reside? People seem to react with a lot less distress when you put a clamp on their clitoris in SL.

Okay, seriously. Now what is in it for us? Why should we do YOUR work for you? Where will you publish your findings? What are the parameters? Who is funding this study? Why? "Researcher from Swansea University" is far too general a job description. Are you involved in sociology, criminology, business, humanities, computer studies? How is it going to improve our sl (and real) lives. Obviously YOU will benefit but we aren't guinea pigs and our "deviancy" (should there be any) is no more shocking than an episode of Torchwood. Explain yourself more generously. But remember we are many people spread over the world - real people - NOT a nameless survey group.

Anyone who actually knows this topic will tell you that "deviant" behavior is actually just behavior that people don't discuss in public. "Normal" people engage in all sorts of things that might be considered "deviant" -- as many previous studies have shown. It's only "deviant" if it's something you yourself don't do. Shorter answer: somebody is looking for wank material. Pissy answer: I'm really f*ing tired of the assumption that everyone in SL is here for fetish sex.
