Permanent Panties For Second Life Avatars?
Underwear lockdown discovered in new Second Life viewer

http://foo.secondlifeherald.com/slh/2009/07/permanent-panties-for-second-life-avatars.html

Hate to dampen any potential hysteria but this is just a glitch that makes the Teengrid settings active on people using SL1.23 on OpenSim. Though it does point to the fact they are playing with the code a bit, so maybe it will become an estate or PG settable feature or something. Wouldn't be the first virtual world where you couldn't ditch your underwear. It's possibly a good feature to be able to force people to wear the default underwear in PG areas. Easy for experienced users to work around as people will just wear skin shirts & pants I suppose.
Funny, perhaps if they made prim chastity belts compulsory instead (and ponygirl hooves and harnesses for females) :)

It's not that the whole world thinks SL is Pornland. It's that that image is what the majority of people who HAVE heard of SL think of it. 1000 people in your hometown may have no idea what SL is, but ask 1000 people who have heard SL what they think of it. Try asking on a gamer's forum.

This will be quite a blow to Brenda. She hasn't worn her panties since they were taken in a raid in 2007.

That feature is very old, it was mainly a special case for Teen SL. 1.23 makes the feature more general (it's activated by a new PG-only account type that isn't used on regular SL) so that it can be used with LL's new standalone sim product.

You'd be amazed (or maybe not) at how many pictures I have of people sitting on that appendage.

/me thinks 'uptight' is not a survival trait on Zindra..

Maybe this is the time to create a Zindra pictures thread. I wonder if the mods would let us get away with it, if it at least tried to be a little tasteful and was clearly labeled not-safe-for-work. If LL is gonna force this separation, it seems that they should allow it if it stays reasonable..

I missed this..

I don't think that the pics would make it though the nsfw filter somehow ;) Slapt might allow us to start a thread there or there's always the trusty flickr group route with a thread with a link and a warning for sensitive eyes here..

I entirely agree with you that SL isn't the new internet. I've made the same point myself. SL is not like the Internet in many ways, but ... And another thing it has in common is that despite the fact that you can deliberately or accidentally find porn there, most people who simply visit known websites or known locations won't.

That would be a great arguement, except new residents don't have any "known locations". When new residents wander away from their starting location, many of them barely even have an idea of how to get back there. A new SL resident's chances of viewing "accidental porn" on the mainland is far far greater then someone new to the walmart.com website, or even a new AOL user. And certainly more then a new Free Realms user. "Accidental porn" on the SL mainland exsists in contexts beyond commercialized content. Moving only commercialized Adult Content only removes... what did our All-Knowing Overlords estimate?... 2-4% of it from the new resident experience. The other 90-something percent is still there.

SL is not the internet it is an online enviroment. Walmart.com is an online enviroment. AOL is an online enviroment and so is Free Realms. Only one has visual representations of male genitalia. That would be the one that for which no game card/ gift certificate is available at your local retail outlet.

I agree that if LL took any real time to look at and significantly improve the new resident experience, a lot of the "accidental porn" would be a mute point. AOL, Walmart and Free Realms all control the new user experience completely. LL hasn't been able to figure out how to control the new resident experience in the last 6 years. I have very little faith that they are suddenly going to figure it out.

Neither do new Internet users. And they stumble into porn on the Internet too, including in these allegedly G-rated forums, and learn how to avoid it. Or how to find it. Middle America is a huge porn market.

The internet is an online environment, too. Back in the early '90s, which is the period when the Internet was going through this kind of thing, it wasn't even the biggest publicly available online environment.

AOL has been an ISP for most of its lifetime. Time Warner and AT&T and Comcast are ISPs. They advertise to Middle America, despite the fact that the Internet is full of porn:

I've had several relatives with AOL and as the family geek I'm their "free tech support", and I can attest that they found PLENTY of porn through AOL. I just learned what places to avoid on their hard disk.

Second Life is not The Internet, but both are sold to Middle America despite the porn. Middle America doesn't care.

Then I'll just agree to disagree with you, Argent.

You think that SL is marketable to Middle America and I do not. Since SL has not been sucessfully marketed to Middle America in the last 6 years, we're going to have to wait 'til the game-cards are available at Walmart for you to be right.

But I wont be holding my breath til then. You're free to if you'd like.

SL has not been seriously marketed to anyone in the past six years. The only marketing LL has done, that I have been able to find, is through press releases, word-of-mouth, and occasionally through product placement like the CSI:NY episode. I don't recall seeing any conventional advertising for SL itself anywhere. I found out about it through the rumor mill.

I'll keep doing what I have been, occasionally pointing out that hardly anybody except from a handful of extreme gaming geeks even knows that SL exists and suggesting that actually advertising it would be worthwhile. Game cards in Target would be great, but even an occasional banner ad through Google would be an effing breakthrough.

I suspect if Second Life isn't marketable to middle America, it's more because of high hardware requirements, flaky software and virtually no effort to retain users for more than a few minutes.

I doubt the porn drives them away. I believe it's more likely users leave when they decide the porn in SL isn't worth the effort.

This, this, this. *throws the ferret a sock.

I stumbled across SL totally by accident in 07, I don't even remember how, I think I was looking up a game for my nephew's birthday. Very few people I know have any idea that SL exists, let alone what it is about. The ones that do are either gamers or techies, or some other brand of geek. LL has never made any effort to draw in the "regular people". They've also never made any attempt to counter those salacious news stories either when they appear. They don't advertise, promote , or defend their product. Like evrything else, they expect their customers to do it. Where do they expect all these millions of unheard voices, looking for a more predictable experience to come from?

A question, since I don't visit any other forums. If you go to SLU for example, you will see banner ads for just about every virtual world. Does LL advertise SL on any of the gaming, or geek foums out there? Do they advertise SL at all?

I bought new ones with the money I got from the auction.

you may need to have a flickr account to see it because I set the group to be 18+.. don't want flickr to get upset at us and all that ;)
