The reason LL can't market SL to Middle America is because there IS pornography on the platform. Zindra does not negate this; It concentrates and makes it easier to find. Walmart won't sell recorded music that has inappropriate lyrics, what makes you think they are going to sell game-cards for a platform that has realistic penises for sale?



It's not that the whole world thinks SL is Pornland. It's that that image is what the majority of people who HAVE heard of SL think of it. 1000 people in your hometown may have no idea what SL is, but ask 1000 people who have heard SL what they think of it. Try asking on a gamer's forum.

And I am still confused as to how creating a concentrated contient of pornography is going to change the image of SL as Porntopia.

I also heard the reason they came up with Zindra is because new prospective Cultists overwhelmingly demanded for Second Life adult content to be segregated into one place.

Well heck, I musta completely missed the "Adult Content" sections of Facebook and Myspace.

At one time, or so I have read, one of the hottest places for cybering ANYWHERE was the Facebook application that mimicked Scrabble (I've forgotten what it was called) . . . because it was, at that juncture, the only application in FB that had text chat.

The reasons middle America isn't here and won't be are LL never figured out a way to make it easy to join or get more than forty people on a sim at a time. Also there's no obvious goal. If there's no clear reason to show up, most of society won't.

There's pornography on the Internet, and that didn't stop AOL advertising all over the place.
That's like trying to figure out what Middle America thinks by asking a bunch of drunk whackos coming out of a football stadium.

But surely you must admit there is a distinct difference between people using a text chat application to "cyber" behind a sign that said "Scrabble" and a great big flashing pink penis-sign that says "Porn Here!"



Could that be because AOL censored everything their customers were allowed to see? By trying to give their customers a "predictable experience", didn't they sort of shoot themselves in the foot and lose a ton customers who didn't like their censored version of "the Internet"? Isn't that why AOL is kinda a joke these days? I'm sure they still make lots of money from Middle Americans who don't get the joke, but they are not the End-All-Be-All of the Internet they looked like they could have been back in the day of a new TRY AOL FREE cd in your mailbox every week.

But really, Middle America doesn't consider SL "the New Internet" or Web2.whatever. It doesn't consider it the "Next Big Thing" anymore either, if it ever did. It thinks of it as a game... with penises. It heard that you could make money in SL, but then the woman who made the first million (who, by the way, began her SL career as a prostitute) was pummeled at her Business News Conference with... penises.

So, the question stands; How can the existence of the Zindra continent possibly change the image of SL as Pornotopia? And as long as SL does have that image, how can Walmart ever sell game-cards for it?

By the time Zindra is in full swing, the drunk whacko coming out of the football stadium will likely have more of an interest in the things SL has to offer him then the typical Middle American businessman.

I think Facebook REALLY missed the boat by not adding a "Great Big Flashing Pink Penis" application, myself.

My husband has recently become addicted to Facebook, I never even glanced at it before this past week.
Facebook is desinged to be easy, as in if you can turn your PC on and type you can be "productive" on Facebook.
Its been said by many, SL has a huge learning curve, and nothing I have seen LL do in the past 3 years has changed this major issue.


On the subject of Zindra...LL has done their utmost to be sure it won't fail, Public/Commercial mainland adult content must be there.

Well there's nothing tatty around where we are. That statue of yours is a classic. You realise that when people land at my place if they turn 90 degrees they get a perfect side on view.. It's fabulous.

I had some uptight people come over to have a look at the land and I was going to sneak over and throw a towel over the *ahem* appendage (delicate eyes and all that) but in the end I let it go and it seems they were quite enchanted by it (ok, perhaps enchanted is a little too effusive but they were at least cool and interested by it).

Although I do know one of our (male) neighbours was a little shaken the first time he saw it.. I don't think the concept had ever really crossed his path before. lol

Well I am sure the adult content only section was a compromise.

I would not be surprised if the original idea had been to make Second Life Content rules more like those on Facebook or Myspace.

Maybe this is the time to create a Zindra pictures thread. I wonder if the mods would let us get away with it, if it at least tried to be a little tasteful and was clearly labeled not-safe-for-work. If LL is gonna force this separation, it seems that they should allow it if it stays reasonable..

Pornography doesn't wander onto my website. Pornography doesn't move in next door and make itself visible from my website.

You can't create a pornography-free zone in SL for less than $300/mo, and even then, you are at the mercy of your visitors.

SL is not the Internet.

Edit: Oops, forgot about openspaces. Still, $125 is still a lot more than web hosting, which is often free.

BS. You can get PG mainland for far less. Anybody violating the PG rules is in violation of the ToS.

The people "visiting" your website can be looking at a website "next door" covered in porn at the same time, and they're "in your website" just as much as they're "In the porn site". You can't be "in your store" in a PG region and "in a sex cafe" in a mature one at the same time. So as far as big business is concerned, SL is safer for customers and employees than "the internet" as a whole, because you can't be "in two spaces at once" so easily and flawlessly, and someone can't put a magic window in their club showing people your store and the sex cafe at the same time, like they can on the Internet with a blog.

And AOL isn't selling "your website". They're selling "access to the Internet". To middle America. Who are going to find porn there.
And that hasn't changed, and can't change, so long as everything that makes SL worth using remains true. However, SL is not FaceSpace either, comparing SL with Facebook and Myspace is like comparing it with College Football or Hot-air Ballooning.
