From: Colette Meiji I think SL's reputation is "Huh, what is Second Life?"
Or less commonly .. "Oh, I thought that was just some made up thing from CSI"
Among the informed though it has a reputation for being Weird or Geeky. Well there's that too, or, "It's a game like The Sims isn't it?"

From: Qie Niangao I think this is correct--and the more spending will include more spending on pr0n. There's nothing like an aura of respectability to give the "respectable people" cover to get really raunchy. Yep LL would be crazy to get rid of pron, pron's drive to innovation in SL is comparibale to war does to drive other technology. But to mate SL look respectable and have it's seedy side for those that look and want is just like most major cities

From: Milla Janick No, they're on Myspace, Facebook and Twitter because they can figure out what to do with them. It has absolutely nothing to do with them being kid safe or family friendly. What she said.

From: Tegg Bode And I'll say it again, the corps are staying out because the population is staying out, and the general population are staying out because SL as a whole is viewed as a Porntopia. Change SL's image and the population will climb resulting in more people and more spending. I'm confused. How will creating the world's largest concentration of virtual porn on the Zindra continent, accessable by merely filling in a form with some dead celebrity's information going to change SL's image as Porntopia?

Well its not all flying penises and horrid glow either... go south west to Rhiannna.. we have an escort agency and a nicely set up sim... it is what the residents make it. Yes there are some that seem hell bent to leather to make it garish and nasty... then the moles got done and residents took over *smirks*... I mean seriously... the trees the moles put out? NASTY NASTY NASTY. The roads? Horrid. But there are a lot of nicer places being added, and some that got in on the rush and will be the first out.. the best places will remain, and the land will level out.. *shrugs* Over time, i think that there is hope overall. I put up walls around my sim., and get a lot of compliments on them. Why? Cause even doing what i do, i don't care for all the *in your face* nasty looking shit everywhere. Taste is relative...Class is possible. I may not have the most... elegant build, but its not *classical tasteless whoreville* either. Some folks pay attention If everyone would simply realize we are all in the same business, and stop trying to be bigger better brighter, that might help. I mean seriously... do you NEED a 20x20 glow sign announcing you sell sex? Um... your on adult land.. what the hell else they there looking for but adult content? Time will tell ~brie

That's what I find so sad, and darkly funny. Do people need to see a giant phallus to know they are in Zindra?! sigh... Also when will people learn that flickering and glowing builds are not nice, not pretty and actually keep people away? (A bit irritated atm due to a club having rotating laser lights outside, ruining my view in mainland...) Right at the landing point I landmarked in Laffoon when the lands were all empty, is a platform with spinning colored lights. Hello, seizure anyone!?* * I honestly think such things visible to anyone passing by, should be ARable since this IS a health risk to some residents.

Right this moment, someone seems to be trying to crash every sim there by dropping multiple prims with porno poofers all over the place - cheeky thing is, the prim is one originally made by PL himself

From: Colette Meiji No they didn't In July 2007? You numbers are off. Way off. -----------
However the concurrency numbers have been out of wack since 6-6-6 and unlimited free accounts. It really shouldn't be hard to figure out.
Yes I agree... his numbers are way off. When I first came to SL back in Sept. of 06 SL averaged around 40 to 45K when I logged on.

Scenerio 1 Corporate Estate attached to percieved family friendly grid with 1,000,000 online
Scenerio 2 Corporate Estate attached to perceived porn grid with 80,000 online
Which are they going to invest their flying figs in? Neither, because neither exist.

Which are they going to invest their flying figs in? Neither, because neither exist. From: Tegg Bode Well if the grid isn't ever going to handle more than 80,000 online Nobody said anything about what it's "ever going to handle". From: Tegg Bode Newsflash2, people said 2 years ago SL would never have 10,000 online
I think you're mixing up 2005 and 2007. From: Tegg Bode And I'll say it again, the corps are staying out because the population is staying out, and the general population are staying out because SL as a whole is viewed as a Porntopia. The general population doesn't know nor care about "porn in second life". The general population is staying out because right from the first minute's experience the REAL problems... lag, rubber-banding, can't-log-in, grey textures, ... are clear and obvious. THESE are what Linden Labs should be worried about. Not porn. From: Tegg Bode They are using the internet because there isn't any other option, if there were 2 internets porn/geeky and non-porn/non-geeky you can bet they'd balance their precence according to the number of users.
The non-porn non-geeky Compuserve and Delphi and AOL came first, and were totally blown away by the Internet. If your logic was correct Microsoft wouldn't have had to shuffle priorities away from MSN to Internet Explorer in the mid-90s and the big debate today would be whether you should log in to MSN or AOL and hardly anyone would use the Internet any more.

From: Brenda Connolly I don't know, but if it is keeping the corporates out of SL, I am all for it. Yeah, but ya' know... they're not coming. The risk of RL suits taking over the grid is not something about which I spend a lot of time worrying. That's in contrast to the risk of LL creating a button-down grid in *preparation* for the never-to-appear suits, the downside of which isn't just a button-down grid that nobody wants, but the opportunity cost of Lindens squandering our tier fees and their capital on this utterly futile chase of the enterprise market. Ignoring the marketing budget itself, consider how much LL spent on this whole Adult Content Clusterf™ck over the past four and a half months--and it ain't over yet.

My opion as some one who deleted their first account because they'just didn't get it' is that in order for ll to suceed they kinda need togo the way of blue mars and offer areas of acual game structure....just look at how popular the 'i am legend' and csi:ny were....unfourtunately it's all up to 'user creation'and noone has really implemented something truly that great and large scale for gaming and structure and not sure if LL's tools allow you to do so....but I will be checking out blue mars just forthe fact thatis some of which they are tryong to offer

From: Raymond Figtree No bots will show up. They search by price and Zindra land won't be set for sale for L$1 a meter. Also, I shouldn't think too many landbots are age/account-verified either, thus they wouldn't be able to access Zindra at all.

That's the portion of the general population that even knows about SL. Every time this comes up, it makes an assumption that SL is widely known outside of it's niche. It isn't. I bet that I can go to my local shopping center and ask 1000 people about SL, and the majority will have no idea what I am talking about. This idea that the whole world thinks SL is some pornoland is a myth.

This is most likely true, fortunately. They won't be coming. But that is just as frightening. We can see it, yet LL is doing all this to dress SL up for a party and guests who never plan on coming.
