I tried voice chat , I liked it a lot, but I have one concern, and it is trying to understand those with a thick or annoying accent. I hope foreign speakers will have some common sense if they should talk, or keep typing, but I doubt it. ( I have an accent myself, btw ) "I hope foreign speakers will have some common sense if they should talk" Don't forget YOU are a foreigner to them. _____________________

>>>but I make it pretty clear that I'm not available relationship wise.<<< I do as well. Clear as day. Stalkers generally feel that they can change your mind or that you somehow have hinted that they are the exception, no matter how specifically you have worded "I. Am. Not. Looking. For. A. Relationship." Without delving into the personal details of my online life and kinks... Hmm...how to explain, eh, don't think I can. I agree that you're right, I've just never run into someone like that. Maybe because I hang out with furries and we're all polygamous anyway? *cough* CSI, furpile*cough* Maybe someday I'll get a stalker, maybe not (on a side note, there are supposedly "hunters" out there who kill dragons or werewolves or vampires and whatnot and actually told someone who said they had an encounter to set a hunter upon me just to prove that they don't exist--I'm still alive and as above: no stalkers). Also, maybe someday I will find someone who I want to have a real relationship with. Who knows what the future holds? |

The only problem is a lot of them can't use voice anyway, living in their Mom's basement and all...... ![]() right now my subconcious mind must start with the assumption that everybody is about 23, before adding or removing points (years) for certain behaviour. "dude that's so gay" = minus seven years. "you bewbs are like, so hot!" = minus five years. "i have to go upstairs and ask mom." = 23 years exactly. "gotta dash. need to collect kids from school" = plus five years. "omg you are a tendentious, bolshevik tekkie-wikkie ***hole!" = plus 70 years. .. but i digress ![]() _____________________

lol. i don't tend to ask age, but do seem to reach conclusions about approx. how old a person is based on their interactions in world. voice will change that a lot. right now my subconcious mind must start with the assumption that everybody is about 23, before adding or removing points (years) for certain behaviour. well said. Britain is one of the most linguistically diverse areas in the English speaking world, and the general pattern of speech in some areas sounds like a foreign language in others. i have the feeling we'll be more of a bane to Americans than foreign speakers of English. right - if you dont have a Movie style English accent were not going to believe your English. If you dont have a Movie style Scottish accent we are not going to believe you are a Scot. If you dont have a Movie Style Irish Accent were not going to believe you are Irish. For Americans if you dont sond like you are off TV a lot of people from outside the US may think your faking something. Lets not even get into Aussies and New Zealanders. Voice will be a great uniter in SL ![]() |

What kind of motivation? Fingerpainting? Your formula produces results lower than 10 IQ for any set of human measurments. 36-26-36 (cliche) nets an IQ of 3 LOL! My fiancee's measurements!!! HEH! Guess this explains why I don't come to SL to "pick up chicks"- why have a hamburger when you have a steak waiting at home? ![]() |

To Voice or Not to Voice
05-10-2007 17:26
Some very interesting posts... can't believe I read so many. As for me, I won't go to voice at all. I type better than I talk. I listen to the streams, and the dj's and if someone is from over the pond, I can't understand half of what they say, due to the accent and the speed at which they speak. I would actually be embarrassed to have to keep saying "what?" "can you speak slower please?"... and so on.
I would love to see a poll taken, one available to ALL SL members, whether paid or basic. Would be interesting to see what the majority say. So how about it? Let's have a poll and find out YES or NO... who wants voice. ![]() |

If only corporate types really want the voice chat, they could just put it on their private islands and leave the mainland be, I think. A good way to find out what people think would be very beneficial on a lot of issues, I think. _____________________

Accents
05-11-2007 02:13
Don't get me wrong on that.... that is the downside of text instead of voice, you don't hear the emotion that goes along with the text.... now reading what had been said, I just want to be sure I'm taken correctly. I love to hear the accents of others. A good old southern accent, English accent, what ever. I just have a problem understanding them sometimes because my ears haven't been trained for it, my brain can't comprehend that fast anymore. Guess it's an age thing, not to mention, my hearing isn't what it used to be.
I love technology, but hearing someone actually speak.... visualize 5 people all talking at once. I've always been a good multi-tasker as long as I can "see". Hearing speech just doesn't even feel right to me, my opinion only. The levels and background noises too, as someone mentioned earlier. In SL, the way it is with text.... we're all equal. To me, that's very important. One post I had read was so sensible.... why keep adding more things that can go wrong with SL when they can't even fix what's currently broken. Let's get things fixed and running smoothly first... then look into other options... ONE at a time! |

Here my 2 cents too...
i am not againts it or happy for it...im just seeing the way of communication will surely change and some ppl will start to gather with the ones they can communicate and cut off the rest. In my case, Im not a native english speaker and even that i can write english pretty well, i cant speak it to save my life. i have been in SL for 2 years and until now very few times i felt left out. Many times i have to reread what ppl writes and many others i just dont read the main chat cus it goes too fast, but it was never an impediment to communicate and find new friends. Lately some of my friends are using Skype while in SL...we can be all together in the same place hanging out and usually i am the one not in Skype. What does this bring to me, the minority of the group? Being in skype they just stop typing in SL...they move their avis, they make noises, they laugh or do gestures but nothing more, maybe some random sentences that makes the entire group laugh...but im not part of the conversation so im just there watching whatever is going on, getting bored and feeling left out. I could connect to skype and hear them but then again...im the one not understanding jokes, slang and the like...so not use for me to lag myself even more using skype when i dont understand and get frustrated for this. I am a very shy person RL and SL and i have not much confidence in my pronuciation and the fact that i might get asked to repeat myself and that i will end up not understanding what the others are saying with slang, accents and then forengeirs trying to speak english and end up asking cus of this to please type it instead...makes me stress and see the future in my SL will be even more hermit. Reading is sometimes difficult...speaking it in big groups? i cant think on it. This is what will happen to many of us not native english speakers and prolly many others will find ppl that speaks their own language and not mind the rest, but in my case i have stores, i have to communicate with others and i am just hoping everybody will understand why i choose not to use it and not think "he is hiding something" and be pointed out like that cus of it. Just my point of view on this. Kei |

Don't get me wrong on that.... that is the downside of text instead of voice, you don't hear the emotion that goes along with the text.... now reading what had been said, I just want to be sure I'm taken correctly. Yet, everyone knows this barrier exists and there are ways to express the emotion without actually being able to hear it. *Smiles* But I do understand your point. I just deal with a text-only universe on an everyday level (usenet for the win). |

A good way to find out what people think would be very beneficial on a lot of issues, I think. A lot of people I've talked to...and the 20-30 that now hang out in the Beta Grid more than the main grid because of v-chat...have wanted v-chat for a while. As far as the accents, the only reason you don't understand other accents is because you have had little exposure to people of other countries with such accents. Maybe it would be good to learn from it and experience how other people sound. Why not look at it as an indication at how diverse the population really is? _____________________

I won't bother with voice chat, I get enough crap in RL life over my stuttering problem. People hear a stutter they write you off as dumb. My IQ was 139 last time I was tested but I have the dude working at McDonald's talking slow so I can understand the ever so complicated menu choices *sigh*

I lived in a 'primarily' Portuguese community for 7 years, it didn't help me to understand them when they spoke English, with the heavy accents. The only plus that I see to voice is as a learning tool, to learn to speak other languages. But, you can get that almost anywhere. I know that as a land/shop owner, I won't pay extra for voice. My opinion. |

If people are so worried about their RP, they could get some voice changer software. But whatever, to each their own. I don't mind it though.
