Extraordinary Avatar Expo info:
This is your last chance to set up an expo display in Plum. Entries set up after tomorrow Thursday , August 18 at 11:59pm PST will be removed. Entries from Residents not on the below list will also be removed. If you've already set one up, make sure it's to the EAST of the red arrows erected there, away from the telehub. Make sure you display is not larger than 10x10x10 meters, and that it doesn't block other entries, when Residents are looking toward the Expo from the telehub.
Voting has been postponed until a scripter who's willing to create a special voting machine that a) can hold up to 50 nominees, b) allows each Resident to vote up to 10 times (so they can invest all their votes in one person or spread out to up to 10), c) looks better than the default Linden-made voting booth, d) can have it ready to go within 5 days. The scripter must meet the approval of all contestants. I will pay L$5000 to the chosen scripter, on delivery and testing of the machine. Please send me an IM with your choice for a scripter (once you get the scripter's OK), and I'll put nominees up for a vote.

Max Case has offered to create a voting machine for this Expo. On the one hand, Max Case is a nominee himself; on the other, that sort of increases the pressure on him to make an honest tabulator. Since no one else has come forward to volunteer-- and unless five nominees voice any objections by Noon PST tomorrow-- I'll give him the gig. If we get multiple volunteers by then, I'll put it up to nominee vote.

No offense, but having a contestant do it would pose a conflict of interest. I would think that interest in winning would provide pressure against creating an honest tabulator. This is not meant to impugn anyone. I've never even met Max Case. It's simply how I see the situation.
Why don't you ask Ben Linden? He's done harder stuff than this before.

No offense taken, but I am more than willing to open the code for inspection - I would pass Hamlet open copy of final one, which could then be passed on to someone else to vet, or, someone from LL to scan the final code to see if I am up to No-Good-ery™. I offered cuz it seems like something I can do.

I'm not magnificently informed on all the intricacies of LSL, but isn't it the case that once the rights to a scripted object are passed over to another Resident (or in this case, me), and the permissions are locked, there's no way for the original creator to jigger with them? In this way, if Max does script this, he can post the code of the script here, give me the voting machine, I'll check to make sure the script matches the script of the machine (and pass it on to Ben and other Lindens for a perusal), and then boom, we're good to go. (Man, Diebold should have thought have this last election, would have prevented a lot of bitching both ways.)
Huns, I'd love to have Ben Linden help me out, but like every other Linden, he's already up to his ears with his own SL assignments.

Yah Hamlet, that was basic idea. I would pass you the script, with all perms. You could then examine it, get it perused by the various LSL'ers at LLab, and then install the machine. Once installed with Hamlet as owner, it would be nigh impossible to mess with it.
I will probably post it to wiki as well, once it is done.

Cool! Well, Max, since no one's objected, and no else has volunteer, please go to it. Here's the specs again:
A) hold up to 50 nominees B) allow every Resident to vote up to 10 times (so they can invest all their votes in one person or spread out to up to 10) C) look better than the default Linden-made voting booth D) be ready to go within 5 days
And additionally:
E) have a graph display which tracks the ongoing tally in real time
Bonus points if there's a function to export the tally via XML
L$5000 to Max after submission and testing.

Erm... maybe it's a bit late in the game to suggest this, but if you let everyone spend all ten votes on one person, it'll become a "how many of my friends can I teleport to Plum" contest. That was always something I didn't like about SL's feature voting. It could also make it more difficult to code.

L$5000 to Max after submission and testing. A) Shouldn't be a problem B) As well, shouldn't be a problem C) Well, I will do what I can, but with the limited timeframe, and the fact that I haven't even had a chance to set up my simple display, I will be aiming for ummm... Minimalism meets cubism meets llSetText Also, I am thinking Lime / Plum will already have an abundance of visual coolness which clogs people CPUs, so... D) 5 days? Ah... I thought I had till Monday. So maybe we can make it pretty E) Dunno about graphs, but I will make some sort of visual feedback. Though again, I will reiterate my position that showing current votes / av will influence voting. F) Due to ummm... SL's, ummm... tendency to bork up when it's really inconvenient, I will be putting in function to email tally's to you every hour (or whatever you want to set that too actually), as well as various other info, so worst case scenario, the machine can be re-initialized with it's information from last info dump. Dunno about XML export - haven't had time to mess with XML that much. If you just mean export it with custom tags, that's doable, though I figured a CSV dump would be enough. But if we are talking using LSL xml-rpc function, well, I just haven't played enough yet with that.

Pictures Please
08-21-2005 13:44
Hi all.
The voting machine is coming along.
There is the possibility that I will be able to add pics to the vote buttons for each entry.
While it's not 100%, that is the idea, so I would like if people could please send me a _SMALL_ texture they would like for their button, so I won't be trying to collect them at last minute.
The button prims at the moment are .3m large, so that gives you some idea of how your big it will be displayed on the machine.
Please name the texture after your name to make it easier for me to collect/work with them.
Thanks, Max

Two announcements:
Max Case is testing his vote machine in Plum now, near the telehub. Please go there and register your votes like crazy, so we can double-check it's good to go, before officially launching the vote.
Since Max's machine can display up to 50 votes, there's a handful of open spaces for last-minute Expo nominees. Post those here or IM/Private Message me-- first come first served!

be nice to the machine. and it will be nice to you back. In the end, no pictures on buttons. Decided to associate buttons w/ text colour. Keeps it simpler. If you are not happy with your colour for some reason, don't fret. They are generated randomly when the machine starts up (so your colour will be different when official machine is rezzed), and there is a mechanism to tweak colours once machine is up and running. Hamlet - maybe you can tell people if a Linden looked it over and approved the code? I don't want people grumbling the fix was in when I win.

Solid!
Meantime, a runway announcement:
I'm scheduling the first (and possibly only) Extraordinary Expo Runway Show this coming Wednesday at 7pm SLT.
There are 25 openings. If you're a nominee and would like to be featured in all your avatar glory on the catwalk, IM/e-mail/Private Message me ASAP. The first 25 applications I receive will have a gauranteed slot in the show. If I get more than 25 applications, I'll schedule a second show.
Also, if you would like to do the runway show but can't make Wednesday, please tell me that in IM/e-mail/Private Message and I'll try to accomodate you.
