Freeform Role Playing

Hm, never heard of the Withnail place, I'll have to check it out. I do like to role play, including free form, which I did in text based settings. .IRC.. and others. I recently joined a Fae role playing group in SL, though haven't gotten to do much yet to my IRL busy life, but I'd love to role play with anyone doing some things, and this sounds good.

Withnail is a nice place, but there's no one ther when I visit..or when I check the map (must be a timze zone thing).

*sigh* my Victorian inspired Shoppe and Garden place is now right beside a nightclub. Good luck to me. (-_-) The garden area is supposed to be dedicated to roleplayer hangouts but it may no longer be as enjoyable before. Now it's so lag ridden even I have difficulty moving.

It's still open for everyone who wishes to visit. The landmark is on my siggy.

I run a set of Freeform games in the Eastern U.S., and I've been intrigued by the idea of running a Freeform LARP in SL. It seems like a rich environment. I suppose the trick would be to find players and set schedules etc.

Well, if anyone does so.. I like to role play, write, create.. etc.. so, look me up.

How did I manage to miss this thread?
I have been RPing rl for the last 13 yrs...when I started SL I thought it would be something similar to MPORG...but very quickly found out it's not really like that.
So I just play a *normal* me and try and have fun.
I played DL but after few months lost the interest, there's no real story, no goal and nothing to achieve other than hack and slash for more exp... I hope they will release the update/new version soon.
Pity that Testament just went off...hope it's only temporary...all this stuff seemed like a good idea.
So if anyone is up to anything...please let me know. Thanks.

Well, I have a nice lag-free cozy spot in the corner of Solang... I had it set for sale, but if it can be used for something, sure.

1888 sqm, so it's not terribly tiny. It is on a hillside of a rather small-sized island so it kind of is a bit rough to work with, but something could be worked out (I've had some great previous builds there, including a Mesopotamian/Greek combo temple, Egyptian temple, and Aztec ziggurats, etc.

Might I ask where some of you used to RP on IRC? Years ago I was a #BLKDRAGON*Inn regular.

A variety of places. Typically it was SF Simming style RP.

I'm also a long-time RPer and interested in it on SL. Has anyone had much luck with running RP sessions, like one would do IRL? I used to be a big Amber Diceless buff, and was thinking about doing that on SL, since the actual game mechanics are simple.

Wow, IRC RPing. I was trying to rememeber what channel I was RPing on in the distant past, but it was actually alt.pub.cloven-shield on USENET. Now I feel old.

I am a heavy roleplayer too, I played on IRC Free Form Roleplaying as well as several MUSHs (text roleplaying clients). I love free form roleplaying, but have seen nothing like it in SL. I wanted to do an island and have it as a roleplaying island, though it is too expensive. I was going to have like various characters and organizations(Town Guard, Lord, Innkeeper, Wizards Guild, etc.)

I use to do role playing in college. Lets see Paronoia, Travellor and Gurps. I have tried to read the messages carefully. Like the one about character death. Suppose the people that love their characters wont play paronoia.

Had no ideal that people role played over the net but then again did konw about sl until saw a story on MSN.

It's quite simple, really.
One dresses, speaks, and acts in character.

What's harder is the dramatic conflict necessary for effective storytelling.

There would be at a later date. This is just an initially scheduled meeting. We will see who we can get showing up and go from there.

Sorry, Athena, the time for your initial meeting is my bright-and-early morning, and I went from bed to work. You're still welcome to use the castle for the meeting without me there though!

As for RP, I too am very used to MUSHes. My type of RP involves something more along the lines of developing one character in a novel and acting it out. That means a coherent background, personality quirks, some context for the character (what it's doing in the in-character world), and a clear motivation for action based on all of this. The logs of RP read like chapters in a book, it's awesome. Alas, my Japan timezone prevents me from that level of participation in MUSHes these days. :/

I am not so much interested in (though I can do) the type of RP where one acts simply in context. To me that is using the language of one particular theme and smalltalking in theme. To me, it doesn't even have the elements that I find fascinating about MUSH: the progression of a story from characters' invested reactions to events. Now, that might be something I can only do now by fiction writing, and it may not be something doable in SL, but it might work by running traditional RP sessions at set times with a GM, just within SL. Then you have story. I don't know if anyone out in SL RPs off the cuff and creates story and character background this way now, but would be interested in how RP occurs out there.

(Please keep in mind that this is all my personal opinion about my own preferences in roleplay, and not my judgment on how it "Should Be Done".)

As far as large areas, I'm working on my castle still, and it's a rather big plot of land. It's one theme (medieval or whatever includes castles), but taking an idea from MUSH, I could set up rooms to be able to change themes from a menu, depending on what sort of environment people wanted. Not sure how useful that was, but it was useful in MUSHes when people needed a stage for a particular scene and it wasn't technically built on the grid.

Also, there's a group caleld Roleplayers or something, and I joined, but don't know if it's active. Anyone know it's status?
