I often get asked by newbies what role-playing groups are operating in SL. I'm sort of *vaguely* aware of Star Wars and Star Trek groups out there somewhere. Also Withnail's Victorian RP.

What would be nice would be to be able to compile a handout for the active groups, so that I've got some person/persons or place to send them on to, to get involved.

I'd do it! I want mine to get active. Hell I want everyones to get active. Thats why I thought of just kinda meshing all the RP together and starting a group so everyone knows whats going on and what not.

Midian Anyone?
10-18-2005 14:28
I'm part of a group called "Midian." We are an eclectic mix of seasoned RPers and newbies to the idea. We have Drows, Vampires, Faeries, Dragons, Necromancers, re-animators, some beasties and, oh...whatever folks can think of!

We have the most beautiful castle built by Tessa Harrington for Kala Vixen.
The Castle is called Shadow Ridge and it is located in Ess. Go have a look see!

Kala Vixen is our "Queen" and she is working diligently to launch the group. There's a website too, I'll get her to post more here. :)

I just thought this might be a good fit for many of you posting here.

Hi I am Kala from the afore mentioned Midian RP and Fantasy group. I am always looking to workout crossovers with other groups. Right now we are mostly in the building stage of our rp group. And we do more than rp we build fantasy environments and meet and discuss rping/fantasy and horror within the group since it is an obvisous shared interest. Events we are building will be both from RP and just for ppl who love the fantasy/horror genres.

Having been working on this for months now and developing a rules system on the side for conflict resolution. I must say it isnt easy getting people together at the same time due to time zone difference.. RL issues coming up etc.. People lose steam and interest.. But I am fighting onward with my group and welcome anyone to join to enjoy it.. Or more important people who want to help build the system, help teach the many many rp newbies the ropes or host fantasy/horror theme events we have planned. It is easy to say you want the rp but it is much harder when people have to work for it.

Death?
10-18-2005 16:42
In persistent RP, how do you handle character death?

Is the Avatar a "player" which adopts a "character", or is the Avatar the Character?
What happens when a character dies? Do you retire the Avatar or does the Avatar roll up a new character?

I'd love to do some more Victorian Horror. We're wrestling with the problem of immortality. Without risk, there's no "game", it's just "play".

Death?
10-18-2005 17:38
I take it in second life for your av to be your character. Thats how I built my av is from the character I have been and played for the better part of 13 or so years. The way I have role played (good or bad in terms of conflict resolution) in freeform is more or less taking turns acttacking one another. It works out great if you and the other player understand the limits on what attacks and such should be used. I've had people come into a IRC roleplay chat room and pick fights for the sole purpouse to show off or to just fight. They go for killing moves or the like instantly, in turn if I felt like playing around I'd mess around with them for the sake of something to do...or I'd just boot them out of the room. I hold the value of story above all else and the ideas people have for their own characters. I can't tell you how many times int he past the RP has to come a dead stop cause someone wanted to kill someone else off, or that the fighting going on gets out of hand and to personal (is how I put it) and they duke it out in an out of character room. Anyway, I love a crossover and the way my character is he is able to be about anywhere and will be in about any group of characters (less the super-evil wanna kill everything group) I'm flexable and willing to help build or lend $L to a project that I could get into or be a part of.(My group isn't really a group, just me trying to get people working or interested in doing RP) Now as dying goes I've always left that to the character I've seen people get sick of characters or doing it all and off their creation. Some do it when they leave for vaction or know they can't be on as much. I've been a part of some resurrections of close friends and as long as its not so far fetched or just plain retarded...

Anyway yet again >_< I'm willing to hand out a bit of info on my character and the idea of my bit of land\wannabe RP "Darkparadise" (do a find...I'm listed) and take info on other peoples characters, ideas and even their RPs if they have'em! I'm easy to get a long with :)

7-11-resurrection

Oh, that's right. I forgot that there's no death in high-fantasy.

I prefer grim worlds where resurrection isn't possible. Thus, immortality poses a problem. No risk, no reward.

To each his own
10-18-2005 18:35
I just used that as an example. Such as I'm not going to tell another person how to live\die as a character. I wouldn't want someone coming at me and saying "Oh youre dead now good day." I beileve that everyone has a right to allow their character to live or die as they see fit thats all...

To Each His Own and then some...

In response to the death question.....in most freeform RP's I have been a part of it is not really an issue. The person develops a character based on their preferences (vampires, aliens, dragons, demonic half breeds....whatever) and the whole "game" is to interact with other characters in an (often) volatile setting. Each character grows and changes according to the type of interactions it encounters. Each player guides the character on the path they so choose. Most players don't set up their characters to be "immortal" as that makes them very boring but rather they develop a "slow mortality" e.i. a dragon lives for hundreds of years rather than 80. This usually works very well for most freeform rpers. As said before the whole point to the game isn't to "win" but to develop the most interesting plot points and flex your writing skills. The only time I have ever seen it become an issue was when some rather immature rpers joined an established RP and decided to "God-mode" Dragon Ball Z style until the whole room was dead. Of course the players who had spent years developing their charcters didn't want to see them killed off because Goku is supposedly omnipotent. So ressurections ensued. Some people didn't even bother but totally ignored the action. Either way the player is in control of their character, choosing when and if they die (and if it is possible for that character to be ressurected at a later time). Most of the people I have RPed with develop flawed characters which are much more interesting to play/play with then omnipotent Gods and Goddesses. The charcters have weaknesses and carry scars from previous battles but are usually much harder then human to kill. When they are killed (by the players choice) the player adopts a new persona with which to play with. Some characters just don't work and get killed off quickly. Others change through play into something more interesting...like an Elf getting bitten by a vamp and becoming a Velf....or whatever. The point is if your character isnt interesting no one is going to interact with you and you might as well be dead.....if your character is interesting enough...no one will want that character to die.

Been gaming for two years, mostly White Wolf (wasn't a very big d20 player), and I've been looking for a group to RP with in SL. ^_^ But sadly no one replied. I'm glad to have seen this thread.

Here goes nothing...
10-20-2005 19:21
Once I get a bit of free time (working seven days a week)I'm going to make a group and start inviting those that say something in this thread so we can get in touch with one another and start to work things out, such as play times and what not.

I went to those that posted their RP sims and no one was around :(
Which is no biggie :)
So I'm going to start the group "Role Players United" or something like that...its just going to be for all those interested in role playing. Its a board based group and then others can have groups for their RPs.

If you think my group name is retarded let me know...I'll try starting this group friday night or saturday sometime so expect invites from me in game so we can get this stuff underway!

Although I understand this is a mature game my intent of RP is not centered around erotica. If that sorta thing comes of the RP between mature consenting adults so be it...but its not why I wanted to start this RP

Darklife

Hey everyone,.not sure if anyone mentioned us in here, but im the active director of the ingame RPG darklife. Its a game that operates much like any other MMORPG such as Everquest or Ultima online. there are several guilds that have arisen within our sim devoted to RP'ing within the game. We are currently in the process of re organizing and possibly planning for a sequel when the secondlife update comes out. But RP groups are always welcome to use our sim for there RP purposes,..as long as it fits the theme,.ie, no futuristic items,..guns,..etc,..would negatively effect the gaming experience by Darklife players.

so please anyone wanting to come over to Navora and RP and or try the game out. come on over, any questions please feel free to send me an IM.

Thank you.

Free Form Roleplayer/StoryTeller For Hire
10-24-2005 09:12
Hello Everyone,

I have 22 years of roleplaying behind me and hopefully as many ahead.

I am relatively new to online games and am slowly finding my feet in SL.

I am well versed in myriad rpg rules sytems and campaign settings but I prefer true "free form roleplaying" for its raw imaginative potential.

SL seems to offer no end of roleplaying opportunities and almost all players are "roleplaying" to some extent.

I try to avoid RL conversations as much as possible due to its ability to spoil the feeling of escapism that SL offers.

I would like to meet serious roleplayers who care more about creativity than destruction and who want to escape the limitations of RL and embrace their limitless SL.

IM me.

p.s. what are "dice"?

I'll be more then happy to IM you Milo if I can ever log on :(

Though RL convo might come up (i have 4 kids and I'm prone to go away without notice) or something out of character like ideas or the like.

I care about stroy and character interaction more then anything. I've growen tried of the beat'em up RPs. Yeah fighting once in a while spices it up but at every other turn kinda gets old...

You and me both. I'd love to play Mage, Dark Ages Mage. I might give Dark Ages Vampire a try (not really fond of vamps, I prefer werewolf the wild west) but there are just so many poseurs than actual roleplayers that it practically turns me off.

I would like to get involve in Legend of the Five Rings RP too. Political conflict, Honor, Samurai, and War. :D It makes me shiver like a giddy school girl.

Right now I sort of RP around as a Fae Folk Artisan - Tailor. She has a profile notecard ready, courtesy of my GM boyfriend. No stats though. :P (Can provide with stats, considering her background is based on the Fae Folk from Exalted.)

Right now i'm currently roleplaying my avatar but sometimes that can get tiring especially if i want to go 'modern'.

A good idea is to probably letting the Avatar roll up a new character. SL is very customizable that you can change everything about the physical and even personality of your avatar..well all except the name of course. :)) maybe a titler would do as a substitute. :D

As how to die...well I'd rather have those decided by dice than anything else. Combat in SL isn't..as friendly as I want it to be, so I usually rely on my stats to do the battle for me. Same goes in character development where i can spend exp/xp to develop my character's skills.

Don't worry, I don't heavily rely on numbers for my roleplay. It just makes it easier for me to deal with possible combat and even movement scenarios (like if I can dodge, run fast or slow etc)
