From: Eboni Khan Ok so we have 4 people in this thread claiming to be chicks with no way to verify(I include myself). I stand by my original argument. Well, I wasn't sure about you, Eboni, but then I saw your cleavage, with the picture of the SL necklace, if I'm remembering right, and I've been about as certain as one can be ever since that you are female. As for me, I'm so female I'm unable to play a male avatar in any game. (Though I did enjoy the Frog Prince avatar, but then I managed to put a little skirt and jewelry on it, and now it's better, lol.) coco

Just to interject for a moment, I can vouch for Eboni and Pendari's statuses as women without quotes around it. However, I will point out that there seems to be quite a large number of prominent females who are in fact men. I am still finding new ones all the time I did not know were guys. I don't have a problem with it. There is quite a high percentage of females in SL that are actually men. To acknowledge that is not marginalizing the women who are actually female. It is acknowledging a fact about SL. Perhaps SL is revealing a larger truth about life and men in general, who knows - but the reality here is that there is a disproportionate amount of "women".

When are real world governments going to take an interest in SL? This would be a good enough chat room to plot terroristic attacks, and models of the planned targets could be whipped up easily to help with plans, kinda like what the Baku people have done with the planes crashed into buildings. So the Homeland Security people and the FBI would have as much reason to snoop around here as they do anywhere else on the internet, specially if SL gets lots more popular. Barter income is taxable and required to be reported to the IRS, isn't it? Would trading linden dollars be considered barter? If SL gets more internet-like and people pay for things with credit cards the IRS might want to see how much dough is available for them to get their hands on.

From: Pendari Lorentz For clarification only... Does this mean you do not recognize there are *real* people behind the avatars? Avatars are avatars and are gender neutral. Since the majority of people lie through their finger tips on the internet, I am cautiously pessimistic about the reality of the people behind the avatars. This is SL, I am not concerned about peoples RL unless they are RL friends.

Maybe all the female avatars are run by males and all the male avatars are run by females, and the only avs that represent the operators correctly are the gender neutral robots.

That's quite the assertion. Do you have evidence to support it?

Do you have evidence to support it? I think anyone who has spent a large amount of time online, and has met people from online with mixed results can certainly attest to how much people lie about things. I have not met that many people from online as I am relatively new to it overall, and still I have experienced it with people. It may be something as simple as lying about your age or weight all the way to something as completely making up who you are, even down to your gender. It is certainly understandable from a psychological standpoint. For many, it is easy to lie because of the anonymity of it. Also, online they aren't held back by the limitations they have in RL. I am with Eboni on the fact that until I see someone in person, I am at least somewhat skeptical based upon past experience. It is not unique to SL - there are a shocking amount of lingerie models and men with 8 inch cocks hanging out in AOL chat rooms too. (LOL and lingerie models with 8 inch cocks I suppose also lol).

I learned about SL from a resident who told me that there are a huge number of middle aged and older women here who chase after men in their teens and twenties. And get to "wear" leather teddies in public. Heh, it's not the reason why I signed on; it's the reason why I stayed away for a nearly a year. After being here for eight months, I've realized that there are a huge number of middle aged and older women who wear leather teddies and chase after young guys. And a huge number of guys of all ages who wear leather teddies and female AV's and chase after "friendships" with women. And the "colorfulness" of all of this is one reason why I've stayed in Second Life. I have the same feeling I had as a kid, when the circus came to town. What this has to do with government in SL, I have no clue. Except to say that here I'd vote for a president of SL who was a woman wearing a male AV "married" to man wearing a female AV. And vice versa. And in all other combinations, even some I couldn't imagine. However, in RL I'm not sure I'd vote for a man wearing a woman's skin or a woman wearing a man's skin. Chainsaws and the Tobe Hooper thing don't make a good resume for the Executive Branch.

This was actually a general topic and not about government but about the Soccer Moms who push government. It is a thin line, I know. Not everything can be crystal clear as an advertisement posted in general forums.

Ugh, who cares if you're a man or a woman or anything in between? We're not going to have sex with you. Even if we were going to have cybersex with you, which we're not, your gender would matter less than if we were pirates with one hook hand (think about it).
When someone has an avatar with 48EEE-12-48 measurements, a 40 inch inseam, and prim high heels so severe they had to remove their arches with an icecream scoop to wear them, I cease to care about the gender of the person at the keyboard and start caring about the manslaughter laws in their state.
However, it does make me wonder why there are so few normal looking AV women in SL and so many offspring of Manute Bol and Barbarella, and don't just say, "CUZ THERE MEN LOLLZ!!!!!1"

I'd probably get me some cool shades.
[FBI sketch of convicted "Unabomber" removed]
ADDED: this reference was purely in jest referring to someone who was displeased with the government and academics in his country and was also violently insane. I have never knowingly caused anyone harm nor do I ever intend to. I own no weapons, nor am I even comfortable in the presence of them. I would never actually advocate violence toward any person for any reason except possibly in the event of my child's imminent physical danger. If anyone found the post offensive for any reason, please accept my apologies. I have declined to remove it so as not to appear as if I hold such beliefs but hide them when someone questions their appropiateness.

From: Pendari Lorentz What makes you think an SL president would end up being male? Actually, I just used 'he' as the default pronoun (lazy). Otherwise, I didn't really preconceive the president as being male, or that the intern would be female even if the president was male As an aside, this thread is way off course. Muahaha.

From: Pendari Lorentz hehe.. *Several* people in SL have talked to me on the Phone. Many can verify I am female. And I have many friends in SL that are female avatars that I have also spoke with on the phone many times and/or on voice chat. As well as many DJ friends in SL that are female and I can hear them talking. Id say based on my SL experience. If I used the number 50 as the number of female avatars I know in SL. I can verify that at least 30 of them are female in RL. I agree with you on this Pendari. In fact, if my experience was to be extrapolated into a theory (extrapolated, that is the right word, no?), I'd have to say the women pretending to be men is a larger ratio. I know this isn't true, but, just saying, unless most of the women avies I know, many I have talked to in voice, phone or met irl, have had corrective surgery or are very good cross dressers or have very feminine voices, they're women. *shrugs*
