What makes you think an SL president would end up being male? :p

Because most of the chicks are male anyway

I don't buy it. Mostly because statistics have shown that games like TSO, SL, and other "social type" "games", attract a great deal more women than traditional MMORPGs.

I played EQ for five years (and I've played many other MMORPGs). And I was rare as a RL female. My hubby always plays female avatars as well. But all of my friends in those games were RL males save for a couple. So in a "game" like those I could see that being more understandable.

But I do not believe "most" of the female avatars in SL are played by RL males. Half maybe, but not most.

That's of course my opinion. :)

I'd offer huge sums of money to corrupt the government.

Then I'd raise a revolt to fight the corruption of the government.

Actually there is no real way to know if people are male or female without doing a DNA test. All this information comes from sruverys, not everyone fills out surveys. I work in IT and women are outnumbered by men about 10 to 1, those with actual technical knowledge, not managers.

From: someone
The National Center for Education Statistics report that in 2001-02, women earned less than half of the bachelor's degrees in mathematics (47%), agriculture and natural sciences (46%), physical sciences (42%), computer and information sciences (28%) and engineering (21%).

Women in general are not into Science, which is why Geek Girls are such an oddity. I spend hundreds of hours each year trying to encourage more young women into science andtechnology, and it is a hard sell. The learning curve for SL is higher than any other online world I have ever been involved in. I would think using history, human nature, and some statistics that the number of men in SL greatly outnumber the women, especially when we are taking about the advanced SL member.

The information on women interested in technology and science you mention seem to agree with other things I have read. They also agree with studies that contend that there is some favoritism in classrooms given to male students in math and science. Although it seems reasonable to speculate a lot of the resaons there are less women in IT, science, engineering is cultural based factors and parenting.

-However-

There is a large number of users in Second Life; Male and Female , who are not technically skilled.

The learning curve to be a creator is be fairly steep , yes.

To be a user? Not very steep at all.

I would tell them I'd sit up and take positive notice if they paid my SL bill :D otherwise they can play amongst themselves ;)

I hope they do outnumber the women.

As for myself, I'm not a computer anything, except totally self-taught. Even so, I end up being the computer "expert" for my family, lol.

The learning curve to building (as opposed to scripting) may be high, but it is not insurmountable for anybody with a reasonable degree of intelligence. More important to that skill, I think, is patience. And haven't studies shown women have more of that?

I mean building is a tedious process that requires a lot of patience, not the least of which is patience with bugs.

I work in IT as well, and I agree about the ratio. However, to me SL is not just a "technical" world. It can be, and very well is to our wonderful scriptors. But it is also a major draw for artists of varying degrees. As well as designers and of course socialites.

Because SL is not a game, it is an online community, I think more consideration has to be given to the fact that we are going to have a large number of "non-tech" people that are drawn to this environment. And great many of those "non-tech" people are going to be the women that you would *never* see in online MMORPGs.

No way goverment could get rid of me, only way possible is if basic accounts are no mo....Sl will always be me as long as its free. I dont want land cuz i have nothing in particular of a job i want to dedicate myself to...Maybe after i can created more advanced Avatars thru Manequinns that i can script and gesture to do what i want, and have an army of sweedish robots to command to take over the welecome area and regulate on a regular basis on what is considered good <cursing in every sentence mandatory hehehe!>

You can't fit that many prims on that small a piece of land!

Considering that only three Alliance starfighters (those piloted by Luke Skywalker, Keyan Farlander and Wedge Antilles) plus the Millenium Falcon survived the Battle of Yavin, I think it would be safe to make that fleet 'temp on rez' :)

And great many of those "non-tech" people are going to be the women that you would *never* see in online MMORPGs.

Also, some very techy women who have played MMORPGs have undoubtedly come to SL because MMORPGs in the past decade or so have followed a decidedly unsettling trend for female gamers in that they harp more and more upon the level grind and giving players content to kill and not much else.

Now I'm sure I'm going to offend someone with this but I know for a fact that a game like Ultima Online with such things as buying your own house, designing it from scratch, gardening, and tradeskills that never even required you to leave town to become wealthy and sometimes even famous contained a lot more female players than something like World of Warcraft, where just about every single activity involves killing -something- and there's no feature set for sociable activities or to cater to those who just don't want to fight so badly.

I'm not the only female I know who's upset at the trend in MMORPGs, and this is how I inevitably wound up in SL. I made a call between "smooth activities and nothing else" and "slow, buggy world but lots of features that make it feel like a world instead of a static backdrop for killing things", and wound up in SL, giving up on the MMORPG genre.

I do feel bad in SL somewhere since activities are so marginal in actual gameplay most of the time that you won't be doing any of it for more than 5 minutes unless you have company, and that usually only extends it to 30 minutes to an hour in most cases, but it sure beats playing a game that makes me want to beat my head into the wall until it's bloody for all the wasted potential.

Wow, this post turned out more babbly than I thought it would.

I enjoy killing things, but in AO after a while it got to be just another monster to kill; wash, rinse, repeat.

I enjoy creating more, and what a person can create is infinite. You never get to the end of all your ideas.

Ok so we have 4 people in this thread claiming to be chicks with no way to verify(I include myself).

I stand by my original argument.

hehe.. *Several* people in SL have talked to me on the Phone. Many can verify I am female. And I have many friends in SL that are female avatars that I have also spoke with on the phone many times and/or on voice chat. As well as many DJ friends in SL that are female and I can hear them talking.

Id say based on my SL experience. If I used the number 50 as the number of female avatars I know in SL. I can verify that at least 30 of them are female in RL. :)

Gnomes, in the absense of a Pecan Pie option.

Luke would REALLY have to use the force, especially when he roars down the trench full throttle..... faster than the Death Star can rez under him.

"The target area is only two metres wide.... and takes about 8 minutes to load."

The only way to verify that you are in fact female is DNA. Everything else can be faked.

Perhaps I'm just not as pessimistic. I honestly don't think that all the people I've talked to in RL on the phone or whatever are "faking" their voices. Even if one or two did, no way that *all* of them are.

And if I get drunk enough at the NY conference, I'll flash my boobs for some proof about myself. :p

PS: J/K!! NY Conference organizers!!! :o :o

Destruction is just as unlimited as creating. Just hang around the creative person and destroy everything they make.

Not accurate, intersexed people and transsexuals would test negative. :p

Plus I was stating that some of the geek girls are abandoning the MMORPG genre and coming to SL instead. That has nothing to do with me being a verified female or not.

EDIT: Incidentally there is no way to verify that anyone in SL is male either without a DNA test. So everyone must be neuter to you :p

Somtimes unwanted hair, particularly facial hair, can bring one's gender into question :(
