This is very cool. It's a shame the forums are filled with haters. While Glitchy managed to sell this project at his day job, he's a real SL'er... he logs in all the time, travels the grid and hangs out like the rest of us. He's also damn cool, both inworld and in RL.

Congrats to LL for having thier virtual world chosen for this!

I think once they figure out how to handle the details, this should be a positive thing. Come on, one of the many cool things about SL is how far you can take things, and there are definitely a lot of cool avatars out there. Psyra simply has to be able to participate, as well as the mecha and furry crowds. In fact I shouldn't even start identifying people/groups, there are far too many worthy categories and I hate to leave any of 'em out.

As for it being the fringe/edge as Picabo mentions, if this is for a program I hope Glitchy's team will start off with a basic background about how the new resident can shape themselves, maybe even going through a quick demo of the appearance changes. It'll serve to show how wild the selected avies are, as well as show how you get from point A to point B.

So Glitchy, you're gonna make sure we can view a Quicktime of whatever's produced, right? :)

Hey, random semi-related thought... If this is really a good thing for SL and LL, and I think it is, why couldn't LL bring up a full-on fire breathing server to host this "must be lag free" sim? I mean the standard sim servers they buy are usually pretty honkin', but there's always something faster than what meets the economic pricepoint for buying sim servers by the rack.

Hey Catherine, why not scratch up some cash for a supermondo PR/promotional superserver?

Well, I think the servers are more than beefy enough to host this show thing, especially if MTV just uses some fancy video editing.

What's going to be the main issue is client lag; SL can bring even the latest, greatest machine to its knees with enough prim hair. 2 FPS isn't going to look good on national TV.

My guess is that MTV is just looking for a show to capture the attention of some of their viewers that enjoy online worlds and SL is looking for more customers?

Yea, MTV is moving towards coverage of games and virtual worlds... people are spending less time in front of the TV and more time infront of the PC... it's a good strategy to keep your consumer base interested in your programming. Joystiq has an article on MTV's Gaming Coverage.

But most of all, I think this is about a forward thinking producer at MTV (glitchy), creating great content on the road to showing MTV the promise land.

I suppose 'wild and wacky' avatars are probably what's required to sell SL to people who watch MTV. I do hope other representatives of the media will take an interest in non-cool people. We are a substantial number. Ever heard of the grey pound (gray dollar) or just people who don't particularly wish to look extraordinary (while appreciating the efforts of those who do)?

Ya, good point. Plus if MTV's office connection happens to suck, have high latency, or randomly puke... Hope their infrastructure has caught up with their new focus.

Okie, I have to withdraw my entry if we can't wear our own. I just noticed that the override the phoenix uses has No-Transfer anims in them, so some parts of my phoenix *can't* be transfered. So giving a copy = outta the question. Heh. :)

I have to say I'm none to impressed by the planning so far. Worried of lag are IMO not THAT much of a concern as long as the client PC is high performance and interenet connection solid. Once all the AV's have arrived then they can be added to a group and the sim shutoff to all but the AV's who are attending. The sim would have minimal scripts running and ideally would be an island sim. With these precautions the event should be lag free to be a success with the AV's in use by the real people behind them.

I rarely suffer lag, especially on island sims, so lag really shouldn't be a problem. For the record my PC is a X2 3800+ with X850 graphics and 2gig ram with decent ( 4meg DL ) net connection.

I wouldn't want SL to get any more of a reputation as basically being computer dress-up. That's only a small part of what goes on, fun as it might be.

But having said that, you know that this piece, if it goes ahead, is going to go out in the middle of the night and about ten people are going to watch it, nine of whom are going to be stoned out of their boxes and not remember in the morning.

The avatar isn't just a skin. It is the person under the skin as well. If MTV does not want the crazy people behind the crazy avatar, then why enter yourself without knowing what foolish thing they may make your avatar do?
Instead of rushing ahead with this idea, perhaps Glitchy and a few of his friends at work should have taken a few hours to plan this out better.

I had a chat with Glitchy and he sounds very much interested in hearing the stories behind the av (like "stories behind the music", perchance?)—this was good to hear! :)

Yeeeep. Good point... err... I withdraw! (Not hard, I never got accepted, but in case I did and just don't get notification yet) This is too true for me. :)

Nothing personal to Glitchy, but.... it's true. It just wouldn't be Psyra the phoenix any more. :)

Any word yet on who got picked?
01-20-2006 07:42
Has there been any word yet on who gets to be a part of this?

I submitted three photos of my avatar and a full bio to MTV several days before the deadline, and I haven't heard a word from them! I'd really, really like to be a part of this, and I put a lot of effort into my bio and letter but ... so far, nothing. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that MTV has been so busy that they just haven't responded yet .. but then, I bet they got tons of entries, and so I figure my chances are slim. Oh, well.

FYI, if anybody's curious, a picture of my avatar is on my yahoo profile at:
http://profiles.yahoo.com/eris_lobo

Also FYI, if anybody with MTV who's reading this wants to contact me directly, I set up a Yahoo e-mail account using my SL name "eris_lobo" as the main address prefix (followed by "at" then "Yahoo" then "dot com";). That's the account I used to send my application and photos.

Yeah, I may be prostituting myself -- but if you read my Yahoo profile, you'll find I have no problem with that! *grins*

Oh, well ..
01-20-2006 10:25
Thanks for the link. Darn. I wonder what criteria they used to decide who got in?

And although it said to submit your "most outrageous" avatars, I wonder if they really just wanted the standard human look, and being half-human half-wolf turned them off?

Oh, well. It was worth a shot! *grins*

Bleh, why are they (LL) dealing with MTV? Or is this all on their own? I want a game that runs good and loads textures and work like you think a game should work and feel. I hate lagging real bad and watching the sim FPS bounce from 5 - 10 and telling myself "This is normal, this is normal..."

There are way to many problems with scaling and lag. Think of all the people that will join, play for five minutes, flying towards something to only have somebodies gray textured house start to surround them on all sides and quit in frustration and move onto something else.

I was hoping for more variety; all the screenshots in that article on the filming looked like fairly typical human avatars.

You and my sexy lupine self can be in the corner together, sweetie, giving each other sympathetic solace.

Hmmm . . . Your post happened to be number 69 . . . does that give you any ideas as to how we could comfort each other? *winks mischievously*

During the shoot, I kept thinking that the guy was just some creepy 12 year old or some guy playing a pratical joke. He told me to walk back and forth down the run way for like 2 hours.
