Hmm... *not acting as EC's Liason right now*
What if we created a transferable item which upon rez would act like an auto-updater, giving the person who rezzed it the option to get a box of no-transfer freebies? Would this not make the items once again freely available? Like a No Mod/Copy/Transfer "Company/Person Name Freebie Node" or something which would upon rez give the owner the dialog menu option (short lived listen of course) to request a box of freebies from a main server (which would have a delay depending on the person's key so that someone couldn't intentionally spam themselves with the item in order to get the owner of the freebie giver in trouble). How's that sound? Opinions anyone?
Edit to add: If sentiments towards such an item are favorable, I'll see about bugging Varick to get it into a OS dev kit sort of item for aspiring creators.
Edited again to add: Which means free. ^.^

From: Desmond Shang That's why I used the phrase 'transferable items'. Because, barring 'hacking', you are correct. My bust. From: Desmond Shang The difference is that such distribution makes the items not-so-freely available - which seems to be the raison d'etre of the monetary 'freeness' in the first place. However, requiring them to take a couple of minutes of their time to head out and find the source is both trivial and good for everyone. If anything, free transferable items lessen the potential SL experience by not encouraging exploration. There are probably a few different overriding negative consequences from enabling new residents to do nothing more than stay in one spot while things are handed to them.

Well... I was keeping judgement to myself with this thread, but after seeing your own blog entries calling people like me who make freebies, "communists", I lost a whole bunch of respect I had for you. ... p.s. WHO ARE THESE HOTTIES ON YOUR BLOG?!??!!?!?!?

From: Hiro Pendragon I wonder how much your "so what if it's unethical?" attitude affected Linden Lab's decision to do LindeX without you? Huh? I'm confused, or are you? Who do you think this is exactly?

I'm not talking about the hotties, which is why I didn't quote that part in my reply. I'm interested in this comment of yours: From: Hiro Pendragon I wonder how much your "so what if it's unethical?" attitude affected Linden Lab's decision to do LindeX without you? Who exactly are you implying that Jamie Bergman is? Something to do with GOM? That's the part that confuses me, as I don't believe Jamie Bergman is who you think it is, unless I've missed something, which is more than possible.

I think people are missing the point. Communisim is a great system.
Until you apply it to people
Don't use a perfectly good system as a swear word, Jamie, it's rather uneducated.

OIC I was making a joke reference to the comment about being "expert to the SL economy" ... I guess I shoulda quoted the original post. My humor's grown thin tonight at this late hour, so --- NVM, just removed the comment.

Jamie you may want to check out our Wholesale Distribution Group where you receive a discounted price on the purchase of items so you can resell at a profit. Give us a look up. all products are stuff we currently sell but want to expand our marked on. All are original, created and maintained by grouped proprietors and sold in lots with a 20% or more discount exclusively for the purpose of resale shops to increase inventory.

This is actually illegal if you think about it. You as a creator have rights to your items. Has this person paid you royalties? Has this person asked for permission to resell/give away these items. I doubt it.
A few days ago something like this was going on with a big club which I won't name. Jamie, you're immoral for selling others items . As it is I think something should change about the permissions so that abusive users like this donot get away with ripping noobs off so easily.

From: Jamie Bergman I've never hacked anything, thank you very much. Other than hacking off a few people who have spent the time to create freebee items for people to enjoy. I could see charging 1 to 10 L$ as a convenience fee to put them all in a common store for people to find, but more than that, and you really are bending a few ethics. But then, I suppose you are a firm believer in the quote, "There is a sucker born every minute."

Actually, since these items have a unique "key" in the inventory database, it should be relatively easy for the original owner to have LL check the key and verify that who the original creator was. Then they could change the "key" permissions, and those should propagate through everyone's inventory? Wouldn't that stop someone like this dead in their tracks?

Sadly, LL has no tools to propagate any sort of asset change throughout the grid. I asked if they could find the key of my old zombies and delete them so they'd stop flying around the grid; they said they could not. As an aside, I think I remember Cory Linden saying the key database is something ungodly huge, and as such is probably unqueryable. LF

What everyone seems to not understand is that I bought the objects I resell with full rights.
Therefore, there was no theft. I'm a reseller of goods bought fair and square.

Posted in the other thread, reposted here:
I was at Bergman's Bargains to check the creators of the items being sold.
Among the creators:
linkin Slate Trent Hedges Ker Dawn Aaron Perkins Gene Jacobs Alejandro Stewart Cherry Charming Fred Extradordinaire phoenix Behemoth Charles Fauna Eric Linden Bakuzuelas Khan
... and god knows who else.
Also, it's not just Jamie Bergman, it's also Chicago Kent.

Although, thanks to this little bit of drama, I intend to make sure any freebie I release, full-perms or not, is under one of the various licenses that exist to stop just this sort of thing. Sell any of my freebies, Jamie, and I'll slap you down.
