From: Roberta Dalek I'm not sure I get the connection between using communist insignia as a button-pushing tool and terrorism.
W-hat's stuff is actually really tame (sorry guys) - they use images of Stalin and of the hammer and sickle. Surely actual evil griefing terrorists (TM) would use terrorist imagery.
However it works! Even a van with a hammer and sickle seems to wind people up! Congratulations - I seem to have over estimated the intelligence of the community.
The power of imagery to wind people up is interesting. Does a texture make me a terrorist? On an unscripted object? Does the use of a cyrillic-style font (in the latin alphabet!) make me a terrorist?
The community's response to these things is very informative... LOL, no the use of a cyrillic font does not, but when it spells out *cyber terrorist* maybe it does? It could be in Comic Sans, it doesn't change the message. Why do I feel like I am reading the comments at SLH all of a sudden?

From: Huns Valen It is a mistake to equate the actions of a few with the actions of the entire group. When the entire group defends them it takes responsibility for their actions. Hiding being a finger part 2: the revenge. From: someone Furthermore, the towers are a jab at all the idiot jingoists who flew tacky flags from their cars on Sept. 11, when they didn't own any flags at all on Sept. 10. All the other stuff, like the communist symbology and the references to terrorism (aside from the towers), are there to poke fun at people who like to imagine that W-hat is some kind of organized crime syndicate - when in fact the only requirement for membership is an account at an Internet forum. It's NOT funny at all.

From: Nolan Nash It's amazing that W-Hat has been hovering around this forum for hours now. Waiting. It's a greater concentration than I have seen in months. How quaint. I am sure it's because you are just a loose association of players, not groupthink at all. I found it on my own because I read the forums. What is so unusual about that?

From: Nolan Nash You all lament being associated with your group, but anytime even ONE of you is mentioned, you all call each other up and act as a group entity. Ironic isn't it? That's right, all 140 members show up every time any single person is brought up anywhere. You're totally right. You missed a couple. From: Shiryu Musashi You might consider finding another game then, and bringing your group along. I'm sure many would be happy. I like SL. There are a lot of nice people.

Are 100 W-hatters posting in this thread to defend what has been allegedly done? You seem to be making a lot of assumptions here. From: someone It's NOT funny at all. Subjective and, I am pretty sure, irrelevant to the discussion at hand.

Okay so you're the ultimate judge of what's funny? Nobody else can decide for themselves what they think is funny or what they should put on their own land? This is Second Life, not Shiryuyuyuyu controls everything land.

First they came for w-hat and then they came for me...
Or maybe they will come for me first? I've introduced STDs into sex clubs and am tempted to do some stuff on North Korea (just to point out that Stalin is boring).
Maybe I should join w-hat - some probably think anyone defending them is a member anyway....

From: Huns Valen I found it on my own because I read the forums. What is so unusual about that? Well Huns, You are a bit of an exception. As is Ryen at times. However, I am here every nite and I haven't seen this type of moth to the flame activity since the last blowout over this. It's quite obvious that people are hovering and telling their friends to come defend the group, and that is where I find irony, because we are always served this *we are individuals* stuff yet everytime one of your members is accused of something a lot of you lock arms and accuse people of invoking guilt by association.

From: Mia Parvenu I agree, its not a clever joke. I wasn't aware the point of you bringing it up was all about how clever it is, I guess I thought maybe you were trying to point fingers at those you don't like. And it all may be distasteful to you, but taste isn't regulated here. Its not against the rules to be distasteful, so I really don't know what your point is there. You don't like it, fine. Good for you. But it has nothing whatsoever to do with this thread. It depends, areticle 5.1 paragraph IV of the TOS recites as follows: In addition to abiding at all times by the Community Standards, you agree that you shall not: (...) take any action or upload, post, e-mail or otherwise transmit Content as determined by Linden at its sole discretion that is harmful, threatening, abusive, harassing, causes tort, defamatory, vulgar, obscene, libelous, invasive of another's privacy, hateful, racially, ethnically or otherwise objectionable The communist symbol is basically a sumS up of the whole article, alongside with the Nazi Swastika it's probably the most harmful, threatening, abusive, harassing, vulgar, obscene hateful and otherwise objectionable insigna of the world. But going back to the subject of this thread, and more specifically to it's follow-up, paragraph II recites as follows In addition to abiding at all times by the Community Standards, you agree that you shall not: (...) impersonate any person or entity, including, but not limited to, a Linden employee, or falsely state or otherwise misrepresent your affiliation with a person or entity

In some countries the use of the swastika as a political symbol is banned - very few ban the hammer and sickle that I'm aware of.

In fact i didn't talk about the paragraph III of the same article. just IV. Btw, if you don't see the hammer and sickle as an hate symbol i am afraid your knowledge of history is zero. You might as well go read a book or two to make it up.

I was offline when I found this thread, so I am not sure, but here's a guess. What MAY have happened is that someone else found this thread and posted the link in group chat, at which people were free to read the thread or not. Another factor may be that people in W-hat lurk here but don't post much because they don't feel like it. Truth be told, some people in W-hat can't stand these forums.

From: Masakazu Kojima That's right, all 140 members show up every time any single person is brought up anywhere. You're totally right. I know I am. You can interpret "you all" in the wrong way if you like, I was referring to all of you that are here NOW, and have been hovering, spoiling, for hours now. I have been working in photoshop the whole time, checking in occasionally, and, voila! Several of your members have been hovering around here licking their chops for hours. Deny it, I don't care, nor do I believe you. If you don't want to be accused of group think, stop IMing each other and acting as a group any time one of yours is accused of something.

If you take offense at the number of people communism has supposedly killed, then do you also take offense at the number of people Christianity has killed? Do you see the cross as a hate symbol?

From: Shiryu Musashi I see quite a lot of them, and one of their leaders. So what, about five or six? Of more than a hundred? We haven't got any leaders by the way. There are a couple of people who take care of the land and manage the group but they do NOT give orders. From: Shiryu Musashi In fact i didn't talk about the paragraph III of the same article. just IV. Btw, if you don't see the hammer and sickle as an hate symbol i am afraid your knowledge of history is zero. You might as well go read a book or two to make it up. The symbol of communist Russia is not a hate symbol as far as I am aware. It is true that someone posted a swaztika on our land once, and the Lindens removed it. I agree that was not smart and didn't belong on our land. However, they have been to our land and seen the towers and the hammer-and-sickle countless times and haven't had a problem with it. Living in Italy, you may be a bit more sensitive to Communist imagery than we are in the States. Around here the hammer-and-sickle are more of a curiosity than anything else. From: Nolan Nash If you don't want to be accused of group think, stop IMing each other and acting as a group any time one of yours is accused of something. If our entire group is addressed, especially in an accusatory manner, it is not unreasonable to expect that some of us will respond.

From: Nolan Nash You all lament being associated with your group, but anytime even ONE of you is mentioned, you all call each other up and act as a group entity. Ironic isn't it? You're wrong on both accounts. I do not at all lament being associated with W-Hat, I just don't feel like our entire group is to blame for any incident. Most people who join W-Hat come here without any intention of taking Secondlife seriously at all. They are in W-Hat to hang with other people from SA who play SL, regardless of what their behavior might be. Blaming the entire group (which calls itself cyber terrorists as a satire of the reactionary nonsense that gets espoused in their direction) is a nonsequiteur; it makes as much sense as trying to take legal action against Canadian-Americans because of what some Canadian-American did: all he has in common with the entire group is a common background. Secondly, if Shiryu (or whoever) hadn't declared this as yet another incident of W-Hat Cyber Terrorism! and the thread had been entirely about somebody in particular who just so happened to be in W-Hat, I would feel out of place here, expressing opinions about W-Hat. From: Nolan Nash It's amazing that W-Hat has been hovering around this forum for hours now. Waiting. It's a greater concentration than I have seen in months. How quaint. I am sure it's because you are just a loose association of players, not groupthink at all. This is completely different from me and all the other people who are attacking W-Hat in this thread, we're just passer-bys who decided to throw in our two cents, you know, it's not like we have some agenda to take down W-Hat or anything. In much the same way, aren't a lot of you folks "ganging up" on us? :tinfoil: I bet you're a bunch of internet conspirators and hatemongers who have collaborated to bring down W-Hat! That's what you sound like to us, okay. You're accusing us of acting in some kind of dangerous unison. We're some kind of "organized griefers" who combine our efforts to make SL worse off for everyone else. It's complete speculation, and comes off as totally ridiculous, which is why "cyber terrorists" is such a humorous title to many of us. We "organize" when you start talking crap like this about us. I use "organize" in quotes because I have actually only talked to one other person about this thread; the others probably had it brought to their attention by perhaps the same person, but the idea that we're forming some kind of cohesive defense system here was pulled right out of your ass. In fact, a lot of what I've said in this response is probably redundant with what other people have said, because I haven't even read a lot of their responses.
