I've noticed many female human avatars are quite homogenous looking. Mine included to some extent except for 2 glaring ommisions. ;) I would think it's only human nature to make an avatar with some appeal but I'm wondering if this is what others really want to see? I find myself drawn to avatars who look different.

We could presume based on the choices we make when we make our avatars that the fantasy land female with the massive chest, tiny waist and rail thin legs is more appealing than an avatar who looks more realistic, or completely out there. But is actually the case? Are we wrong? (loaded question, I know, but I'm still hoping some will reply)

Disclaimer: I'm not objecting to anyone's avatar. Just genuinely curious.

Well... certainly, the main Aliasi-tar is idealized, but with a sense of versimilitude. More in a "hey, if I worked out all the time and ate tofu instead of playing Second Life..." kind of way. ;)

Although, given I collect avatars of all kinds, that has a limited meaning; I'm as likely to be the incredible inedible Prim Elemental or a guerrilla squirrel as human. The human avatar is just a reliable baseline, really.

... As much as beauty being in the eye of the beholder, theres also a tendacy from some people who make an effort to look different to dismiss everyone for "looking the same" - without REALLY looking at how they look.

While its true theres a lot of common themes, theres a lot more variety in human avatar looks than people seem to give credit for.

I play an av thats very petite by SL standards, I like to think I look pretty good. But I definitely did make efforts to look attractive. I admire peopel with original looks. But i dont judge people for having the "Club goer standard body" on that basis alone.
Well you are right off course.

I was not trying to dismiss folks, I just find "original" more exciting. I don't necessarily mean sexually or "romantically" exciting, just interesting/exciting.

If I go to a club, and I am drinking and dancing etc., I am looking around for what I personally find attractive perhaps, so that is different.

But if I go to a social gathering of some other kind, I usually immediately focus on the "monsters" and other weirdos in the room. Those are the ones that always turn out to be interesting and to have more conversation than the rest IMO.

PS - For those that have never seen the avatar "in person," Colette is sexy hot!

;)

I have 3 AV shapes I switch between....

Midget....

7'8" with odd head shape and 2 foot neon purple mohawk.....

and my animation shape which is pretty much the preview AV with some tweaking...

I don't think of them as glamor AVs by a long shot... so please stop stalking me (you know who you are)

One thing that may contribute to a lot of female avs looking the same -

We all start with the same AV - A tall thin AV with thin legs , and no body fat. I cant remember exactly but i think tis even called Female, thin.

from there -

Most people only make subtle changes to the head and face they dont want to "mess it up"

They make their Boobs bigger (the default ones are more modest) many go too far.

The try to make them Perkier by lowering the bouyancy number - this ending up with big softball shaped breasts. They also make them closer together.

They make their legs longer without making them any curvier this making for lon thin legs.

They dont mess with the height , so the average person is very tall.

Most also wont mess with body thickness or body fat or belly size.

They might increase the butt a little everyone wants a lil curve there , the problem is increasing but size isnt always the best way to make it look better.

TO compound that many are on limited Budgets so pick a middle of the road hair style. Their skins tend to come froma small handful of places too - the ones that are a good value. Of course they also want to be Tan ...

SO basically a lot of women end up looking the same.

As time goes on , many women reduce the bust size of their av, refine their features and figures slowly and subtly and eventually they begin to take on a more unique apearance.

This is also the reason for the freakishly short arms that plague secondlife... Tall avatars with short arms, and people wonder why the animations are all broken ;)

They must change the default avies over time; those things were huge! It was the first thing I turned down.

No tan either. A natural looking avie feels comfortable and is easy to slip into.

Whenever I see an AV I honestly ask myself "I wonder how they look in RL" which is usually followed up with a peek at their profile. I get a kick out of how people design their bodies to reflect their own tastes. Some people look like their AV's, and that's fine, some look incredibly different than in RL, and that's cool too. Heck, part of SL is being able to taste something different for a while.

In the back of my mind, we're all like a bunch of kids on the playground. Each one of us is sitting there with his or her GI-Joe/Barbie (or in this case, custom AV) in hand projecting a personality onto them and acting out how we'd like them to be perceived. Some of us find solace in the average, some the extreme. When I see an Avatar, I try to imagine it as a facet of the personality of the whole person who is controlling it.

I am the same way. To me, AV's are just like made up cartoon drawings. I cant get turned on in a sexual sense by an avatar. With that said, I think an AV and the creations people make says alot about peoples personality and who they are in real life. Not by so much in the terms of appearance but in other aspect like creativty, personality and many other things you can learn by observing them.

So I tend to also be drawn to people who do not take the perfect human form. Anyone can be beautiful in SL. Anyone can give themself perfect breast and a nice ass. Not everyone can pretend to be a unique individual though. I am not saying anything is wrong with looking like the perfect human form, to each his or her own I guess.

I don't know if my av is any kind of ideal or not, but in a world where absolutely anything is possible, Barbielike is the last thing I wanted her to be. Come to think of it, she's never looked like an average human, either. Well, as a newbie she kinda did, but less so now that she's been here a while.

She's somewhat curvy, but not overly so - usually tan, but just as likely to be pale; often wears slightly-less-than-human eyes, has a growing collection of tattoos, and is never seen without her ram's horns. She changes hair color frequently, though it's usually red, and in a year in SL has only just recently started to wear it blonde now and then.

I didn't want her to look like my RL self or like an ideal fantasy woman; I wanted her to be more of a projection of my daydreams of what I wish I could be. She's sort of a virtual manifestation of the adventure heroine/scifi-fantasy protagonist/mythical creature who exists in my mind and fuels my attempts at writing.

I think she looks great; not stereotypically cover-model sexy, but that's not what I want. So far I've had no complaints. :)

I do want to add.

My main AV is a short little bald guy, never gets hit on by female AV's.

My alt. is a muscle bound tall AV and he always gets IMs from females when out in public.

I've always had a thing for classy broads, so I'm not really all that impressed by the vast majority of the trampiness that goes marching about SL. I'm always impressed by female avatars that are wearing elegant yet concealing clothing.

Honestly, ladies: in a place where you could be wearing elegant evening dresses and other tasteful and thus alluring gear, why the hell wouldn't you?

It's funny that you started this thread - I was just thinking about this issue and was going to ask it myself. I was somewhere in SL the other day and saw someone who had an overweight av - not the typical kind where it seems they are just making a joke - but a very realistic avatar. Certainly not the porn star or heroin whore look that so many avatars seem to have, which I find very unappealing. I thought it was very cool, and rated and told them so. She thanked me and told me that seeing all the fake skinny avs running around made her feel worse about herself, not better, so she wanted to make something that reflected who she actually is.

I am sure some of it is the element that the Awesome You article touched on - people want to make idealized versions of themselves. If you have go through life overweight, and deal with all that entails, why make your avatar that way? I can understand that logic. I often think also it is one of the reasons you don't see as much racial diversity as you would expect amongst those who do opt for your standard human av .

Personally, I prefer voluptuous women, though I find a wide variety of women beautiful. I definitely like women to have curves. The barbie doll/supermodel type has never done it for me, and I live in a town filled with them. A well proportioned woman is far more appealing to me than some toothpick with the body of a 12 year old boy. I admit, I am a sucker for a great pair of (real) breasts and a nice behind as well. The classic T&A certainly never disappoints, but there is more to it than that. Nothing is sexier to me than a confident woman, whatever her proportions.

I think people just get slider happy. It is easier to push the slider all one way or another than find that perfect place in the middle. I find my AV is shorter and curvier that many. Plus, my cool skin is not stark white but not exactly tan either. I find stripping naked and asking for advice from people helps get the proportions correct. (Thanks Strom!). But I am always tweaking my AV. I have a "skinny" one but she looks too much like a 12-year old boy with implants...so I don't wear it often. My main one is short, has hips, mid sized boobs that aren't hitting her chin, and some booty. Skirts almost never look good. Those are made for tall Barbie shaped AVs sadly. (Hence my skinny AV).

Are there any designers who have clothes made with the non-size 2 AV in mind? I would love to see some. Right now I stick with a select few (ie HoseQueen and Jennyfur) for skirts.

It's an interesting question. I guess people vote with their feet... or in this case, their sliders.

I must admit I don't quite understand the propensity for such large breasts. But then, I don't understand the guys who go for the 10m wide shoulders and watermelon biceps either. Don't they know that just turns to fat when they get older?

I too like originality and individuality. Proportionality is also nice. For example -- Ingrid, Eboni, and Canimal (who also recently posted on this) all have different shapes, but they all look sexy in their own right.

I've heard people make comments over this or that shape celebrating or not celebrating the female shape. Well, women have lots of shapes and that's a good thing. :) The only thing I DON'T think celebrates it are the absurd comedies of massive tits, tiny waist, and stick arms/legs. The only thing that celebrates to my mind is plastic surgery.

While I could be considered guilty of not having body proportions that are normally found in your everyday woman, they're not Lara Croft exaggerated either. It's a fantasy world- I'm playing a fantasy character different than my RL persona, so I'm going to take some artistic freedom and create a figure different than my RL shape.

Many people have commented that they find my av attractive because it's not just another tan-skinned Barbie with hoochie hair. People are attracted to the unknown, and I look rather mysterious- a blade-packing, raven-haired ninja in pale Japanese geisha makeup.

I also believe that clothes play a large role in attraction, and I believe the same theory applies- people will be drawn to that which is exotic. There's already enough ladies out there who wear the same style of bell-bottom low-riding tight jeans, a belly shirt, and enough bling to safely land a 747 with. However, when you choose to wear a hybrid outfit comprised of pieces from 5 or more different outfit sets, you come up with something very unique and noticable. ;)

Probably for the same reason I don't wander around in WhipBitch clothing, lingerie or a Little Bo Peep dress.. because it makes me feel like I'm playing dress-up.

While that may be a major part of SL's appeal to a lot of people, it's not my personal taste. My av dresses pretty much like I do.. jeans, bohemian styles, hippie sandals.. It's what I like, and what I personally find appealing.
