Was I Asleep when Events became all Club Contests & Bingo?

I confess, I don't get out of Riiki near enough. So I pulled up the Events calendar thinking I would find something interesting to do. Seventy-Eight events listed for today, Wednesday. Promising. Then I started breaking them into categories.

34 - Come dance at our club and put on your sexiest <fill in blank> contest.
20 - Come dance at our club for one reason or another.
8 - Bingo, Bingo, Bingo (1 poker)

Wow... if SL mirrors RL as some people claim, I must not get out enough in RL either.

Dear Surreal :)

I'll give an example of what's changed for me: I haven't noticed as many trivia events lately as I used to. The saturation of these kinds of events you mentioned bothers me not in and by itself, but because viable alternatives are disproportionally rare and hard to find. They're still there -- but you gotta dig for 'em. I like to explore... I've played bingo, I've done themed contests at clubs (i.e. coolest hat ;) ), but too many of them is... too many.

And that's redundancy for ya. :(

I noticed this too.
Since I normally don't have time off durring the weekday, I don't know if this is typical or if it's a byproduct of the holiday season (where many people are on vacation or caught up in RL stuff, so they don't have time to do events that need extensive pre-planning).

Personally I was hoping for more classes, particulary in advance building, texturing, and scripting. But some original contests or competitions would be fun too.

What's really annoying is that Siohban was going to hold a Winter Festival but had to cancel it due to lack of interest. Well.. I was interested, just unaware that it was happeing . (I know of others who were interested too but unaware of it). It's not like she does this 4 times a day every day yet why was it not listed in events in world? (In other words, I have a hard time seeing how what Siohban was holding was spamming the events calendar).

The whole club/bingo/triva thing has gotten so prevalent that I no longer even look at the events anymore and just fly around looking for stuff or depend on my friends to let me know when they are holding an event.

Maybe clubs and casino's should have their own event listing tab and all the other events could be listed in a different tab, I don't know.

I just feel bad that I miss good stuff because it is not listed or I forget to check the Events thread in the forum.

one reason is because some event nazi decided that store openings and other things were not ok to put in the events.
If I want to creat an event that says "come look at my toenail" for tonight a 5pm, I should be able to.

I have noticed this too. I'd be surprised if I check the events tab once every two weeks. It could be just coincidence, but it all seemed to gradually go downhill after the events stopped being announced and when the event rules were changed.

Then again, I wonder if it's because the population of SL has also increased, and it's all about the money.

Eww, does it have that nasty green fungus all over it???

This is an old, old, old debate. Back in July, the Lindens cracked down due to lots of system abuses. Many of us advocated better search tools so that you could post lots of events, but end users could easily filter them with advanced search tools. Don't look for such changes any time soon. We are/were lucky that a) the Lindens stopped announcing events each hour, and b) that they are being lenient with what's being posted.

I just gave you an idea!!!
You can have people come and look at my toe!!

I think he meant that all the events are either bingo, or at some club.
Your events kinda pointed that out with "DJ".

I could be wrong.

Like others, I rarely even look at the events list anymore. It's all the same thing. When there is something unique and interesting, it gets lost in the shuffle. I have a couple events per week that I go to, held at consistant times/days. Other than that, I only check out events when someone IMs or sends me an invite.

What I would like to see are different Tabs in the event lists, just as there are on our maps. Parties, Trivia, Classes, Contests, Creation, etc etc. That way I could skip to what I felt like doing without being spammed by Topless Sexiest Av Money Ball Parties.

Speak with Lynn Lippman... ;) :D

And, I know one of the town hall logs talked about the fact that "soon" the events calendar will be broken down into categories. Not sure how "soon", but I got the impression it wasn't going to be forever till we got, but not tomorrow either. :)

Yes, but it needs to involve a cash ball. The orgy ball at the Edge is a particularly classy variation on the theme.

It would be nice to see clubs and casino's in one category, Mall Events in another, Educational Events in yet another and then a tab for those unexplainable events, like toe worship.

What makes it difficult to post events is the Lindens are very strict (at least that I have noticed) when it comes to event hosting... It has to involve competition... this leaves event hosts with very little option.

Well the trend seems that since the Events listing is 90% club/sexiest this or that contests etc that alot of decent events get overlooked. Why bother looking at the events menu when you already know what is going to be on there?? I've also noticed that instead of posting to the events calendar alot of people myself included, make up invite notecards/textures/objects and pass them to the friends that we wish to invite, because most likely they won't be looking at the events listing.

I wonder if it would be possible to separate the Events Menu from the Find menu meaning... The Events menu would yield categories like Clubs, Contests, Games, Special Events: Weddings, Birthday Parties etc.???

Actually, just events that want Linden support have to involve contests. There are general fun, discussion and a few other catagories as well. Discussion events are some of my favorites.

I think LL should stay out of policing events altogether, other than obvious TOS violations. Not every event needs to be a competition, or to fall within the limited guidelines they have set up. I understand setting up limits on what they will pay for (do they still even do this?), but for events that are not receiving compensation, there should be very few restrictions (if any).

There still are restrictions, Asri and the Le Cadre models tried to do something interesting and new, Asri hosted a fasion week... 3 events a day , all from different designers, for 7 days... ALL her events were delted because they were not "different" in a different location... we were furious... we had argued , kicked, and screamed when it happen and luckily the Linden allowed us to repost them "this one time"... but it certainly discouraged us to try anything new or different that involves too much effort.
