Yes. There are only 160 spots.

Well I was going to hold off paying until I paid my monthly bills but after this news I signed up just now.

Am I a nerd for being so excited about this thing?

Quite possibly! :D

It's too expensive for me.. I can't swing it until after the price increase and then it's too much.
Though the drive from CT isn't bad... I'm not a fan of NYC.

West Haven. I know there are a large number of people from Branford for some reason. Someone in that town must be a good sales person. LL should put them on the payroll.

Hey gang! That's great that more are coming. I'm really getting geeked up for this thing, and believe it'll be awesome. We're keeping the registrations confidential, for obvious reasons, but if anyone else who has registered wants to let it be known they're coming, feel free to IM me I'll post your name here... or just do it yourself. :-)

Let's also not forget that $95 isn't just the price of the convention (we keeping hearing "$95 for a convention? Too expensive!";), it gets you:

- Open bar at a party Saturday Night in NYC - top shelf ($very expensive)
- A Second Life pewter necklace ($15 value)
- Bragging rights to attending the FIRST Second Life Convention (priceless!)
- Free swag provided by sponsors ($? value) - items already include polo shirts, bottle openers, and more by your favorite SL businesses.

This is just a reminder of the overall value. We're filling up fast, so if you're waiting on registration - I wouldn't wait too long. 160 is a HARD CAP, and includes sponsor and Linden registrations too. This is due to the absolute limit the room we have for space can hold.

Regards,

-Flip

Flip, should we be discussing nametag photos here? and what might be the easiest way to implement for the community?

-

also, Beau.. if you're a geek, then so am i! i signed up as soon as i saw registration was open.. and i've been spouting about the coolness of it to all my friends.. and even some people i don't know! lol..

i may head to Albion after the saturday night party, there's a band playing that i saw locally, plus i've been gewtting some "status" there even though i've only been there twice. heck, one of the DJs invited my friend and i to the guest list.. i think for this saturday, which will be the Grendel show. it would be cool to drag a gaggle of SLers with me the night of the SLCCC party.. sort of an unofficial after-party-party. lol..

looking forward to seeing everyone there.. and good luck to those trying to raise the money to go. to all those who can spare some change.. i think this is a good cause to throw that change at, for those who need that little boost a few extra $L can offer it would be well appreciated i'm sure. :)

well that's nice Cybin.. but of the thousands of SL residents, how do you decide who's needy?
Given there is only 160 spots, which until FlipperPA's last post I didn't realize included sponsors and LL staff, how the heck can anyone go? That leaves maybe 120-140 spots for SL residents.
So the well known (people 'raised' money for Pendari) get to go and the few who sign up.

yeah I keep bitching about the price, but $95 plus expenses is a lot to me. And I'm sure it is to most people.

Camille, I was surprised to learn this morning that it was only 160 capacity. I am not very surprised though. I am sure someone had to put money on the line to reserve the hall and organize the party, without knowing what the demand would be they really had to be careful. They could have gone all out, reserved date at the Jacob Javits Convention Center, planned on 1000's attending and then only have 160 actually register. That would have been an expensive loss.

I would assume if this year has a huge demand, and they under estimated the interest level, we will see this as a much bigger event next year. Keep in mind, it is just Second Life residents who stepped up and took the initiative to get this ball rolling.

its also very resonable to stay outside the city, in jersey or wherever, and take public transportation in.

Fort Lee, which is right over the Washington Bridge has a Motel and a couple of hotels like Sheraton :) Any questions, send me an IM.

Wow this event sounds exciting ! I live about 20 mins from Manhattan, so the thought of this is tempting.....But I have a question: I'm very shy...actually very very very shy... If I go, can I just lurk in the shadows and observe the event?

OMG the excitment is building over here in NY. I am having company at my place. So u can count on Pendari, Zarah Dawn and MagicJustSue to this great list of attendees.

Flip, I will contact you in game as I only just found out about the festivities and want to be included as well. Passing the word onto my guests. If u all have a blanket and pillow and no place to stay contact me in world and will try to squeeze u in at my apartment.

Love,
Misty

Processed my registration tonight, so I'm committed :)

Now that I've taken the first step - anyone have any good recommendations on hotels and such? I'll check with our corporate travel agency tomorrow but local expertise is always useful.

Currently planning on flying in early Saturday morning to spend some fun time in the City, then partying SL-style at night and taking in the sessions on Sunday. Currently planning on staying over Sunday night, but that could be subject to change.

Looking forward to seeing you all there! :D

WooHoo!!!

I'm coming too! Need to figure out the hotel part, but that should be easy enough! I'll just follow in someone's footsteps.

Used to take day trips to NYC with Hubby before he was, wonder if he would care to revisit some old haunts????!!!!

It mostly had to do with the size of the rooms and how many people they accomodate at the New York Law School. We didn't think it would be fair to register 500 people if only 160 could fit in the main room where the majority of the presentations will be. In the event planning timeline we are pulling this together in a VERY short time. Most large scale events are planned a year out.

Quick update for anyone who's listening ... I've confirmed we're having a building event of some flavor at the in-world convention. Details as soon as I get them and chew on them. :)

Nimue, you can come as your in world persona, your real self, or anything in between. On the registration is a field for the name to appear on your badge. Its fine to just lurk, watch and come and go as you please. The Saturday night event will be quite social, but the Sunday is more of a structured day with speakers and Q&A's on various topics, like a typical convention. I hope you can make it! We're trying to make it fun for anyone from SL who can make it.

As others have said, this is the first year, and yes, some of us have had to guarantee some fairly large sums of money to even have a shot at this working. We've been lucky enough to have a very generous first wave of sponsors (Linden Lab and ANSHECHUNG.COM) which have allowed us to keep the cost this cheap for the party and the convention. Second Life has always seemed to me to be a band of philosophical estranged intellectuals who can party with the best of them, so the combination of party and convention seemed like a natural fit to me.

I hope to see you all there!

Definitely, Cybin!

For those unaware, Cybin is designed very cool name badges for the convention which will be a DEFINITE keepsake. He's volunteered to receive screenshots of peoples' avatars to be included on the name badge design, which I have seen and is VERY cool.

Cybin, we'll start emailing registrants with details shortly including the verification codes and information. Perhaps will include your email and instructions on how to submit their avatar screen shots.

Regards,

-Flip

to further elucidate..
08-30-2005 14:37
first, as far as "who" to give $L to to help pay their way, i suppose the best rule of thumb would be.. for friends to help friends. it seems like the only logical answer.. because i agree, how could we say "this person deserves it over that person"? we couldn't. so, if you know someone who wants to attend and needs some financial support.. just support who you want to support.
for instance, i'm thinking about throwing some money at Pendari.. but i'm also wondering if i could convince Marcos (Fonzarelli) to attend if the money were raised for him.. which makes sense to me. i'm familiar with Pendari because of the forums and think it would be cool to help.. and for Marcos, he's my in-world neighbor and has been for over a year.. so again, it makes sense to me.
now, i'm not asking anyone to help anyone in particular.. just do what you can for who you can.. if you so choose, or not at all. no matter.. it's all personal choice and i was just resounding the call to help those who we can, because that's what our community is like.

in other words, i didn't have to say a word. HA! ;)

-

now, as far as nametags go..

Flip, yes.. you can include my email (cybinmonde@cybinmonde.com) so people can send their screenshots (or RL shots) to me so i'll have a good looking file to work with.

i know some people may be using RL names instead of SL names, which is fine, but they may also wish to use a RL pic instead of an SL pic in that case. so whatever the case may be, they can all be sent to that email of mine.

i've been finalizing the design and by the time the pics start rolling in, i'll have the templates to throw them in. which reminds me, i may make a seperate template for anyone who doesn't get around to sending in a pic.

not sure how we're going from template to badge though.. i'm assuming people will pick up their badge at the convention, yes? also, not sure how/when/where they're getting printed up.. and if i'm responsible for that, then i'll just bring them all on saturday? or maybe elsewise.. not sure, we'll need to iron that detail out somewhere between now and then.

-

anyhoo, i can't wait for this thing! i'm proud to be a part of it, not to mention looking forward to the saturday night party.. which will probably last much later than 10.. lol.

(wow, this post is a lot longer than i had planned.. hehe)

Reg done, will be setting aside some days off shortly.

And now that I can see a website, I'll send it along to a couple other places I peruse (in particular, the new forum pages for the Double Exposure convention group).

Boston to NYC area Sl'ers? Carpool?
08-31-2005 07:48
I am there!

Anyone who lives near Boston or between Boston-Southern NH and NYC, please drop me a note! I'd love to meet up and either grab a train down or carpool.

Please consider this a general invitation and not just a convention request. Maybe we can set up a LAN sometime.

Since I have been known to burn the Midnight Oil on more than one occasion, is the Main Hall going to have closing hours? I have passed on a night's sleep before! If not, I may just pass on a hotel.

Do they have coffee in NYC?
