I don't know of any NJ hotel nearby that would qualify for Hilton HHonors (the other membership I've dealt with in my many years with NJ game conventions). But I recommend both of the above highly, I've been in them.

I only stay at 2 hotels in NYC and those are the Waldorf and the Soho Grand. I have enough HH points to live in the Waldorf for a month at least. LOL. I'm not concerned for myself. I was just thinking of other people. I can also always mooch off a relative.

What's a "State of Play"?

I'd go, but not to NYC. There's far more to the east coast than NYC, so I do my little part to raise that awareness by not supporting events that knee-jerk-reaction choose NYC as their base when there's so many other worthy locations on the eastern seabord.

My vote is for Philadelphia. Quite a few SL'er there, and it is known as City Of Brotherly Love, which I consider quite apropos for an event like this. Atlantic City isn't far from it either, which means one can combine drinking and gambling into a single entertaining night!

- Newfie

I agree Newfie... I'm in CT but would rather not go into NYC... even Boston would've been better.

I would have suggested somewhere more central... so east or west coasters didn't have to travel all the way to the other side of the country..

...somewhere central that caters for conventions... ample hotels, entertainment... food... hmmm where would I find such a place?

Oh! Las Vegas!

Well that would certainly be very central for me :)

As for me, given the choice of 6 hours on a plane or shoving my head up a pig... well the pig gets it every time :)

Siggy.

Planning it!

Thinking of attending at this point. I will be back east anyway at that time. Sounds like it could be great fun, especially since we are getting a fair warning of the schedule.

Hope to see you all there.

P.S. I love N.Y., but like L.A. weather better.

Back story:

Originally, the conference was just going to be a meet of about a dozen or so users, just to socialize. It was going to be NYC simply because that's convenient for us and there are a bunch of residents in the immediate area.

When SNOOPYbrown popped the idea of doing it State of Play weekend, the reason it needs to stay in New York is:
1. State of Play is here and we're looking to grab interest from that conference.
2. Lindens will already be here and they will be able to attend.
3. SNOOPYbrown has a lot of contacts in the NYC area that may potentially become guests, and will add to the quality of guests as well as the visability of the event.

It's also the greatest city in the world, but I suppose that's subjective. ;)

In any event, NYC is set in stone. If the location was flexible, we'd probably be scheduling this for Spring 2006 rather than pushing it 2 months from now.

So basically, what I'm saying is that if you are looking to book plane / hotels, the weekend and location are set.

As far as content, we're really looking to make this event inclusive, so tomorrow's SL Future Salon at Indigo, 3:30 PST will be crucial, and we're hoping to keep a level of transparency and openness to the planning as things progress.

...

As far as the difficulty of travelling to New York City may be for residents, we're looking at ways to offset that, such as perhaps reducing any potential entrance fee for anyone travelling by plane. We're also looking to put together NYC travel guides that will give advice on where to sleep, eat, and have fun at budget costs. We want to make this as affordable as possible, but again, we have to have the conference somewhere.

I live in northern Hoboken myself, so will just mass-trans there (and may also be able to take days off for that timeframe). I'm also tossing out hotel and general NJ->NY info from my own experience, I moved to Hoboken because I got tired of my commute to work (in NJ) being 2/3rds waiting the last couple miles in the tunnel traffic to NYC.

This is first I've heard of State of Play. I've only been following one or two 'generic' game convention groups, but nothing specific to SL.

I will likely not make it to the event in SL. That's 6:30 EDT IIRC and will be at my parent's house meeting them and couple other relative who are visiting. In particular finally give my father back his PC. ;)

Heh, you speak of Hoboken as if it's bigger than a mile square!

I suggest staying at the Chealsea Hotel. Last time I was there, I called Ethan Hawke a dick!

I live, born and raised in NYC, so I'm definately there...

ALso if you can't find a room, but still want to be in the city (City in my terms is the five boroughs) and reletively close to Manhattan (New York, New York), you may want to try to get into the Brooklyn Mariott Hotel (http://marriott.com/property/propertypage/NYCBK) which is right by the Brooklyn Bridge, and right in the middle of Downtown Brooklyn. Tons of trains and of course right over the bridge is the city!

Don't ya just love wikis. Quick and efficient orgainization brings out the details and that makes a good conferance.

Glancing through the speaker ideas I was excited to see nVidia listed. It would be really cool if we had a talk about the state and future of video adapters. If Philip talks, I'd rather hear a good streaming lecture than a heady stream of academic organic virtual world buzz words.

I'm gonna go if it's at all affordable. Maybe I'll change my sig to "Buy trees and help send Khamon to NYC" ha ha ha. I'm seriously debating what I can do to help. At the very least I can attract attention and hand informational notecards to people that don't read the forum.

Thank you all for organizing this. It's a great idea and seems to be coming together very well so far.

There have been a few people in the Wisconsin and Chicago area talking about carpooling and caravanning... pop into #secondlife on IRC (EFnet). :-)

IF you have ideas for what to add to the WIKI, just add them to the wish page.

Currently, I'm thinking of adding:
- voluntary "who's going" page that includes possible carpool contacts
- Manhattan attractions guide - this will have things to do during days and nights if you're around for more than just Sunday and saturday evening. Also, where to have fun and eat for cheap / free.

Most other promotional / informational stuff will likely go on the upcoming webpage.

Thanks SO Much to everyone who's volunteered so far! We still have more things that you can help out with, so if you want to take an active part in making this convention a hit, please e-mail me!

We will be having a website up soon as well as in-world kiosks to promote the convention. If you are interested in hosting a kiosk on your land, please drop me an e-mail. Kiosks will be low-prim.

Yet another reason to regret leaving NYC...

I live on 20th St. and could probably walk to that conference. But I'll be gone before October.

just a quick note
08-02-2005 11:57
i've added a couple names to the convention wish list: Steven Johnson and Prof. James Gee.

i came upon these names last night while reading the July issue of Discover magazine. the story was entitled, 'Your Brain on Video Games: could they actually be good for you?'.

it's a 5 page story about how gamers are generally more perceptive than non-gamers. how we're above average when it comes to problem solving and more. Prof. Gee noted how video games present us with new learning tools, challenging us to think in different ways, in essence the same way we learned our materials in school.. instead of simply regurgitating knowledge we've already learned to solve problems, it requires that we form new and complex paths of perception.

it would be interesting to see what they have to say about SL, a place where the rules are that there are no rules. maybe they could shed some light on SL burnout? that point where we feel our brains will implode if we don't take some down-time for ourselves every now and again.

Why NYC?

Seconded. Its on the east coast which makes it quite incoveninent for midwesterners and west coasters.

Why america? This makes it inconvienent for Europeans.

This has been explained several times in this thread. You have to have it someplace, and since my lair at the center of the earth isnt finished yet, you have to pick someplace thats going to be farther from certain people than others.

The fact that the Lindens will be in town helps.
