1st Annual SL Resident Conference - NYC - is a go!

Who: Any Second Life resident and Linden Lab staff is invited. Co-organized between SNOOPYbrown Zamboni of SL Future Salon and myself, with support from Linden Lab and additional residents and guests.
What: We've been given the formal go-ahead by Philip Linden to host the First Annual Second Life Residents' Conference. (name tentative)
Where: Manhattan, New York City. Location T.B.D.
When: Sunday, October 9th, with possible informal social engagements the preceding two evenings following State of Play .
Why this will be cool:

1. Guest speakers
   
2. An setup that will be inclusive to all attendees
   
3. Meet SL users from around the globe
   
4. The first of what will become an annual tradition
   

How to help: This is a conference by and for us, the residents of Second Life. I want to emphasize that you should feel that this is your conference.

This Thursday, July 28, 3:30 PST, in Indigo sim, SNOOPYbrown Zamboni will be hosting another SL Future Salon, where the conference will be one of our topics to discuss. Please come and give us your input to make this conference what you want it to be! (I realize the last SL Future Salon was full to the brim, but we are working on ways for more to attend.)

We are also looking at ways for residents to be co-sponsors of the event.

I am personally very excited about this chance to bring people passionate about Second Life together, and I am very happy about the level of enthusiasm I have received from Lindens and residents alike about the event!

I realize this is short notice, and we are working furiously to get details ASAP, but the convenience of hosting this State of Play weekend when Lindens will already be in NYC was too tempting to pass up.

I'm going to try to relay this meeting to other nearby locations in Olive and possible Crimson. Details to follow!

Once I get the details of the full scope of the event, I can offer my Event/Conference coordinating prowess to the mix (negotiating discount hotel room blocks, discount airfare (which may be tricky, but I know that it can be done) etc.

This could be interesting. I might be able to show up and meet some of the good folks of SL.

Interesting question: Which name do you put on the name tag? Do we all walk around with our SL name, our RL name, or both?

I'd say that'd up to the resident / Linden. I'm fine with sharing my RL identity, but with an RL name like 'Tim Allen', I'm google-proof, heh.

Privacy is absolutely paramount. Some people want to retain their anonymity, and that privacy has to be absolutely and completely respected. Cameras should be put away permanently once the first drop of alcohol has been consumed!

Luckily for me I am Jennyfur in all realms of my existence. Oddly enough, I am *still* the only Jennyfur in SL or at least I was the last time that I checked. However, I do not share my RL last name, cause I am the only person with my actual name and I plan on leading a stalker free existence.

I have family in the Northeast--oooooh, a two-fer.

There will be alcohol? That is a three-fer!

Driving to New York City is lagtastic. I prefer to splurge and do the Metroliner or Acela trains, of course I got spoiled by taking business trips to NYC that were paid by the company. That being said we probably will end up driving, I'll leave that decision up to flip.

Aren't hotels in NYC a little pricey for an event like this. I usually spend $250-325 a night in NYC for a hotel room and that is with a corporate discount.

cool. I would love to go back to NY, and it'd be interesting to meet some SL people. its easy for me to deal with the name thing, because of other online stuff I answer to seldon in RL now.

It depends. Alot of times you can negotiate group/conference rates which are cheaper. Granted there is a big as is price difference depending on what hotel and where it is.

its also very resonable to stay outside the city, in jersey or wherever, and take public transportation in.

For those of you that want to this on the cheap, get a hotel at JFK and take the AirTrain JFK from the airport to Jamaica, Queens, and then take the LIRR or Subway into Manhattan. You'll save money, most likely.

As for me, I'll try to come. I'm out on Long Island, so it's not that hard for me to get there. Just a 40 minute train ride.

Barring any unforseeable circumstances, I'll be there. I was so sorry to have had to miss the San Francisco trip. This one will definitely be easier. NYC is my old stomping grounds anyway, and it's only an 8 hour drive, or else a really cheap, one-hour plane ride. Unlike SF, which would have cost an absolute fortune from here, this is doable. Count me in.

If you need a centralized place to act as the "box office" let me know. I have done this sort of thing for other groups I am involved with. It makes registration for events very smooth. I should mention my website is designed specificaly for events.

I also have some hooks into convention centers.

edit: forgot to mention I am very excited to see a east coast SL event and will definetly be attending.

there's always the possibility that something will come up, but i don't see that being the case.

i, too, was bummed about not making it out to SF, but NYC? heck, yeah! i won't need a hotel room, but who knows.. it might be fun if we're all staying in one place.

i'm also planning on making it to the in-world meeting about this (have a post-it with the info right by my comp already). i'll do what i can to help.. i may be interested in one of those co-sponser deals as well. (not that i have a business or anything, just happy to help SLers help SL)

i'm tempted to sign up for the State of Play conference as well. looks like there will be some interesting topics (the current state and future state of legal matters, for one), not to mention speakers (hello, Cory ).

all in all, this is awesome! congrats on the official go ahead with "SLerCon 05".. not a bad name either. straight forward and it "sounds" official as well.

looking forward to meeting everyone.. and the night to be remembered, if we can.

what do we need a conference for? we are meeting in cyberspace everyday! it's the mETaverse! it's the meeting of minds without the body getting in the way! more importantly, in sl we are all hot like barbie and ken. i want to remember all of you in your prime.

Why NYC?

Well, because that's where State of Play is. Also, NYC is a big city and it's fairly easy to get to. Plus, it seems that a lot of SLers live within driving distance to NYC.
