I called the Governor to see if Alabama could be moved just offshore of NYC that weekend and he said yes. YAY! However the bridge construction would take nine months and we can't afford the fuel for regular ferry runs. Oh well, guess I'll fly.

I'm extremely encouraged that within hours of posting this, we've gotten such a positive response. I want to stress that the best way to help out is to RSVP and attend for the Thursday SL Future Salon, 3:30 PST in Indigo -- we're working on ways to simulcast and will likely either split up into groups or field questions through one person. Things I know we're going to need that people could volunteer their time: - Word of mouth advertising for the next few weeks - Website designer for the event - Builder for In-world event information stand that we can point people to - Photoshoppers for posters / fliers / nametags / etc - Grunts who live in the NYC area that can help physically set up / take stuff to printers / etc (I'm probably planning on taking vacation days to be a grunt too.) _____________________

Maybe...

Manhattan's surreal enough to make perfect sense as a venue for an SL Con. Plenty of people I need to visit there, just have to see what the schedule holds.
Hiro: Shouldn't it be "Second Conference?" Just a thought... "Second Conference - NYC" "Second Conference - UK" "Second Conference - SF" etc. "SecondCon: The Metaverse Made Real" _____________________

We'll probably discuss the formal name at the Thursday meeting. 9 definite in one day, sans the Lindens who will be there and organizers! Awesome! Today has been a huge day behind the scenes, as well. We're planning a Saturday social event; it'll likely be limited seating (though that number depends on interest) and a single fee to get in and get open bar. (probably a limited list) _____________________

Hiro, the saturday event sounds like an awesome idea, especially because i'm guessing at least 1/4 to 1/2 of the attendees won't be there on time to attend such an event, the limited engagement part of it should work out to include just about all who want in.
![]() continuing on the same subject, is there some FIC official in-list? (LOL) or maybe just some sort of reservations list to join? point is, i'm highly interested.. i live on the Jersey Shore and could easily come up both days.. could possibly help with some grunt work, photoshopping or web-site help. i'll assume this angle will be covered at the meeting. once more, i have to say.. HUZZAH!! east coast AND the first SecondConference, SLerCon, First Annual SL Resident Conference, et al.. i'm flabbergasted and can't wait. ps - i should most likely be bringing two friends with me who just recently joined, 'heaven Aubret' and 'Loki Backbite'. (if i mentioned that Loki Backbite had an involvement with the punk band, 'Dead Heros'.. would that mean anything to anyone? ![]() _____________________

This is great, we chat in IRC, and we're meeting in RL.
What's next? Start using the networked team edition of auto-cad? Is SL really that buggy that we refuse to try to use it? _____________________

I'm happy to announce that Acceleration Studies Foundation, the non-profit behind SL Future Salon, is officially a sponsor of the Conference!
Hiro, the saturday event sounds like an awesome idea, especially because i'm guessing at least 1/4 to 1/2 of the attendees won't be there on time to attend such an event, the limited engagement part of it should work out to include just about all who want in. ![]() Again, the "limited" part will depend primarily on how many express interest. Flip's planning this social event, so given my personal experience with one of Flip's parties, this should be good. Yes, the SL Future Salon Thursday is absolutely crucial for planning. As for an FIC official in-list, we're attempting to make the conference as open as possible for input. That's why we're having the open meeting Thursday in the SL Future Salon, as well as other details that I'm not at liberty to reveal yet. ![]() _____________________

![]() Though, now that I think about it, they are fingerprinting and taking pics of canadians entering US now. Not so sure how keen I am about that. Maybe an alternate conference for the rest-of-the-world-SL'ers in Montreal. ![]() ![]() |

Aren't hotels in NYC a little pricey for an event like this. I usually spend $250-325 a night in NYC for a hotel room and that is with a corporate discount. If you are Starwood Hotels member (Sheraton) you can try the Sheraton Meadowlands in Secaucus, or the Shearaton Weehawken (the latter literally just outside my office window, and they also give out ferry tickets for the Lincoln Harbor port). I don't know of any NJ hotel nearby that would qualify for Hilton HHonors (the other membership I've dealt with in my many years with NJ game conventions). But I recommend both of the above highly, I've been in them. Other methods would include staying at the hotels within the Newark Airport area, for those flying in (and using AirTrain and a combo of other mass-transit, including PATH, to enter NYC). I also recommend Acela / AmTrack / NJ Transit Trains from prior experience. _____________________

For anyone looking to book a hotel, we are looking at group rate options, but I can't guarantee anything until we get a better picture of how many people are coming, etc.
I do, however, highly recommend Priceline.com for hotels, which lets you pick the area and set your own price. (You can always put in low figures and keep trying.) I've had 3 upgrades for reasonable prices out of 3 times I've used Priceline for hotels. For those who can't find a reasonable room in Manhattan, I recommend trying for Downtown area Jersey City (Newport area) - which has immediate access to the PATH train (NY - NJ train that goes under the Hudson) which is easy and a quick ride into Manhattan. _____________________

I've gotta give Hiro credit on this one; we used Priceline for the trip to San Francisco, and ended up with a 4-star AWESOME hotel, 1/2 mile from the Lab, for $105 per night! It was fantastic.
If any NYCers have connections to places that might be a good location for the Saturday night social event, please contact me in game! I have some connections in New York from my days on the mid-90s indie music scene, but we're all old and married now... you have to turn in your cool indie rocker card at age 30. I'm also looking for folks to help out with Saturday night, so let me know if you're interested! Willow, when we come the UK later this year, maybe we'll throw something informal together. UKSLcon... Well, because that's where State of Play is. Also, NYC is a big city and it's fairly easy to get to. Plus, it seems that a lot of SLers live within driving distance to NYC. What's a "State of Play"? I'd go, but not to NYC. There's far more to the east coast than NYC, so I do my little part to raise that awareness by not supporting events that knee-jerk-reaction choose NYC as their base when there's so many other worthy locations on the eastern seabord. My vote is for Philadelphia. Quite a few SL'er there, and it is known as City Of Brotherly Love, which I consider quite apropos for an event like this. Atlantic City isn't far from it either, which means one can combine drinking and gambling into a single entertaining night! - Newfie _____________________

You should have come to our post-wedding party! About 13 SLers showed up, it was a blast. We've had three of four times we've gotten together with at least 5 or 6 SLers. The reason for NYC was that we'll be able to "tack on" this event to the State of Play conference, which is fairly large, and will already have a fair amount of SLers/Lindens attending. It just seems like a natural fit. While I'm a huge proponent, as you are, of there being a lot more to the right coast than NYC and D.C. (and frankly, Philly is much nicer than both of those places!), this conference offers us a unique opportunity to meet some neat people and, hopefully, get some awesome metaverse enthusiasts to speak.
