Why is there so much tolerance for repeated griefing/threats?

They just come out with the usual shite - "every resident has the right to do as they please on their own land / in their second life / whatever"

I was on my land yesterday, editing, adding a stream to fit in with the neighbors. Suddenly, I'm flying through the air, a couple of sims away

I teleport home, am there for a few minutes, back at work, thinkin' it was a glitch. BOOM, once again, flying, about 2 sims away. This happened about 5 or 6 times. Am I being targeted on my own land?

It got to be pretty frustrating, having to tp back to my place after being slung across a couple of sims.

I can't say for sure who it was, but I've got a good idea, one of my neighbors doesn't like me too much, for some reason.

Shade.

Shade, you know you can go on your menu to Help > view pvp abuse and see who was hitting you, right?

sitting on an object will prevent you from going flying

if you want to see who did it, in the "Help" menu look at "View PVP Abuse..."

The more I think about it, the more I think how ridiculous is the Lindens are tolerating this kind of behavior on such a regular basis. I can understand one or two suspensions, but after a few times it should be strike out.

There is no reason to disrupt the community in this way. People PAY for this virtual world, with real cash. If this were just another PvP game, it would be different, but it is not, it is a virtual world supported by real cash. I mean for people to be crashing sims full of people, and all on a repeated basis is ridiculous. I mean maybe the Lindens should create a four sim war area off the main grid or something, bigger than Jessie. But that should be the only area this type of thing is allowed in, and even then people should not be crashing the entire sim.

All these miscreants running around the grid. This is NOT a game, it is a virtual world. In no way is Second Life a game. There are games WITHIN Second Life as there are on the internet, but Second Life itself is not a game. I can understand if two people agree to fight each other for fun, but not people crashing entire sims full of people including bystanders.

People pay real cash for this virtual world. You crash or hack servers on the Internet thinking it is a “game”, and it is a federal offence in the United States that can be investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. There is no point in crashing entire sims.

For grief like this to be allowed in in Second Life is just beyond me, but we are paying REAL CASH for the property and for other things.

When I first joined Second Life, I didn’t read anything about this being a PvP game.

I don't know if anyone has suggested this before since I only read the first page of the post, but why not ban this guy and all his alternate screen names from the land that the event is held on? At least do this until the lindens can help. This guy sounds really abnoxious btw. I don't understand, SL is for fun, not for being serious, or for making money (unless your name starts with Anshe and ends with Chung :p ), but somehow people continue to try and ruin it. Just relax, its all good in the metaworld.

The Lindens aren't gonna do anything REAL about this kinda situation unless it affects their pocketbook.

The problem I have seen in my limited time here is that there is no consistency with the Lindens. If there is a formula, I'd love to see it. The only thing they show consistency on is in not allowing people to name names. I'm OK with that as we have seen nutjobs here post names of people they don't like and accuse them of all sorts of crimes.

But, particularly in the area of griefing and threats (Cris' original post), Linden has shown a proclivity towards coddling the criminal element. I'm cool with due process but it's fairly easy for them to figure out who is doing what and when someone's name comes up on the blotter for a third time they need to be removed.

Appologies if this has a "gee, she didn't read the whole thread" smell about it. But I saw this just pop up in the police blotter (emphasis mine):

From: Police Blotter
Saturday, March 19, 2005, in the region of Loon. Using alts to continue harassment after suspension. - Warning Issued.

no, No, No, NO. If someone is suspended for greifing and caught online as an alt, you need to suspend the alt too! You have to be punishing based on the player, not the avatar. It ought to be common sense.

Bad Linden. No cookie.

(P.S.: No I don't have anything to do with whatever brought on the report.)

Wow..that's crazy!! The person was suspended for harassing someone, then logs on an alt and continues to harrass, and they get a warning????? Umm..something is definitely not right about that!

And yet if we shoot or otherwise hamper the harrasser, we get warned or suspended?

That doesn't sound like justice to me -- Elle, consider echoing your post in Hotline To Linden please? I'm hoping that was an error of applying the system. Repeat offenses, especially defiantly trying to sneak around further with alts and disturb the peace is a definite thumbs-down in my book.

This is a further proof that LL treats recidive griefers as kids that needs to be just scolded mildly andthen sent back to play.
After all i am no more surprised after reading what Robin said about ONLY 20 people permanently banned in 2 years.
This lack of seriousness in treating with griefers is REALLY bad in my eyes.

Yeah, I remember the whole Nazi drama. Took forever for them to do something about that, but it was more subtle. All out griefing the Lindens usually act on immediately, or at least they used to. I had a Linden hiding under my house to catch a griefer in the act once. With a click banned him right there on the spot. So they used to respond on that kind of stuff right then and there. I haven't had any problems recently so I don't know if they still do.

as far as ive been told all disciplinary actions have now to been taken by a dedicated office (meaning it has very little to do with most the linsens that are in world). This can be a cause of the increasing laxism i see every day towards griefers.

Good God that's stupid! No wonder there's a general perception that the Lindens don't do anything about griefing!

I pay REAL money for City of Heroes, I guess that's not a game. You can pay money for land in Ultima Online, too. You can buy e money for all sorts of online games.

I paid REAL money for Monopoly, I guess that's not a game, too. Oh wait, but the difference between this and Monopoly is that you can't pretend to have sex in Monopoly!

Can you not accept that you spend so much time in, and worrying about, a GAME?? Children play games, not serious adults like yourself, who go into clubs and pretend you're dancing instead of just going to a real club.
