It's a character attack. It may seem civil, but the point is that character attacks do not contribute to a proper discussion.

And the point, kiddo, is that people who don't actually foster proper discussion themselves have no credibility, nor any right, to demand it from others.

Getting back to the original intent of the thread (I hope): Things I regard as INFLAMMMATORY in a thread -

Banter
Any brand of the Knights-Templar
Simple pleasures
Any old mundane comment by a forum rant star, followed by three pages of unabashed synchophantry: "Well said!", "Couldn't have said it better!", "You rock!", "You expressed it far better than I ever could!" (really? I take it you're in a coma?), etc.
Responding with "logic" or "outrage" to blaze's perpetual performance art (why not just clap meaninglessly?)
Refusing to look beneath Ulrika's razor-sharp provocations
Ignoring Margaret Mfume, even when she's being irritatingly correct. Same for Dianne Mechanique and Eboni Kahn.
Not having a secret respect for Nolan Nash's junk-yard dog attitude.

And mostly, neither being able to make a point nor enjoy a discussion conducted with humor, wit, and sarcasm - but also grace, humanity, and seriousness. It's a fine balance, the many violations of which have been amply illustrated here. :)

I must, respectfully, disagree with this assertion. This is not a college debate team match (do they have matches? bouts? what?). This IS a discussion forum and the credibility of the participant WILL be taken into account by someone who is discussing something with said participant.

It does not have to be a college debate or whatever.
Credibility attacks do not in any proper discussion anywhere hold any relevance to any point being discussed. The only time credebility is important is when dealing with statistical information. The sources of statistical information needs to be verified as credible. Other than that, allowing a person's credebility to influence your opinion of a statement will not make for a proper assessment.

this is totally off topic and I certainly don't expect to convince you of anything, but I believe your approach makes the same error early philosophers did. You are dealing with human beings, and a sophisticated approach examines both the statement itself and the person(s) making the statement. Lord help you if you're ever at the negotiating table.

The approach is logical, and is far from a mistake. It matters not who you're dealing with subjective approaches will not get you anywhere. If you do not approach a discussion with properyl, is there really any point in having a discussion with you?

well, the answer is probably no. If two perspectives are sufficiently alien from one another, and there is no desire to compromise, you're not having a discussion, you just have two people talking past each other.

Righty O! I think my approach if perfectly logical and appropriate and I won't try to convince Pleasure of that any longer. And Pleasure, you won't get me to believe in your rigid assessment of how a proper discussion in the forums should be handled. I'll let it go at that for my 3 cents.

Have a nice day, Pleasure :)

/me awed by the power of the colors ooohhhhhh!

this is more fun than arguing with someone who listens to what the politician says in a vacuum, rather than looking at the 10 year track record of said politician and making judgements accordingly.

It is inflammatory. People on this thread are doing nothing but participaint in mob mentality trolling. Blaze was right. People here on this forum have no interest in adult discussion. They only troll and mob, and the Lindens do nothing.

I'm not Margret, nor do I play her on TV. But..

People who intentionally troll forums are really, really irritating. All these people do is get people agitated and that's one of the things that starts trouble.

No problem picking this up, Dogspot, as I had to step out. But this wouldn't have been my response. (2 A's in Margaret, too. :D)

Cris, I'll get back with you in a bit if the thread isn't closed or gone too far down a dark alley. I'll bite, too, but into my lunch takes precedence. Salmon with lemon/green onion vinagraitte and sauteed scallions is a terrible thing to waste.

GOAL!

Man, this takes me back to high school. One of my friends was this very nice Mormon fellow. He had this enormous Buick. Back seat the size of a studio apartment. But, being a nice Mormon boy, he was loathe to acknowledge the frisky possibilities that such a backseat in his vehicle laid open -- despite my many occasions of observing such potential, usually prior to dances and other courtship functions. He was very proud, in fact, not of the spacious back seat, but of the integrated collapsable hangers that were installed in the ceiling of his vehicle. On the occasions where a suit was called for in presentations, these hangers would see enthusiastic use by my friend, who would take every opportunity to demonstrate their utility.

Anyway. We sat among a larger group of friends in our Spanish III class. At random, usually during particularly hushed tests, we would count three and then bellow, in the style of the Central American Futbol announcers, the word "goal," to much surprise and amusement. The closest of our compatriots was usually sufficiently startled as to knock writing utensils onto the floor.

Who are you to define what is "having a proper discussion"? If you truly believe the forums are open to us all, then you will be faced with having discussions with people who do not share your view of what makes a discussion valid, or your views on anything, for that matter. Life is filled with humor, with sarcasm, with seriousness, with anger, passion, and myriad other things. Discussions will contain the same, and I am glad they do. I would much rather have a discussion with people who don't spend their time telling other people how to discuss things than I would a dry debate with a stoic automaton. To each their own.

If everyone in this forum where to take a walk with me in a pasture that contains only bulls. One person steps in something that smells like shit and looks like shit. Almost everyone will conclude that person stepped in bullshit. That is not group think or mob mentality. It is a group of people that came to the same conclusion, that this is bullshit.
